Now entering its 48th season, the Long Island Game Farm -- Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will officially open on Thursday, April 13th. During the opening weeks, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the forthcoming baby animals, including chicks, ducklings and kid goats, and will be able to pet and hand feed the animals once they are born. Though some of the park’s Summer animals (giraffe, camels and lemurs) are still vacationing in Florida until May, the Spring season is always an especially fun and relaxing time for guests to visit, with cooler weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. In celebration of the season opening, the park is offering a reduced Spring admission price of $14.95+ per child (age
Scientific Skills Students from Idle Hour and Sycamore Avenue elementary schools in the Connetquot Central School District were recently selected to compete against their peers from across Suffolk County in the upcoming Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair based on their dedicated scientific research skills and original school fair projects. Kindergarten- through first-grade winners were selected based on projects that displayed robust research, a thoughtprovoking hypothesis
and conclusive results. Over 100 Suffolk County schools take part in the Brookhaven National Lab’s Science Fair, with close to 500 students competing against one another annually. Springtime Sniffles Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

Last Hope Receives Grant
Last Hope Animal Rescue recently received a $15,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to help fund the preparation of incoming kittens for adoption. Kitten season is about to begin within weeks. This grant will not only
allow our organization to place more kittens in loving, responsible homes, but will work in parallel to our various efforts to spay/ neuter & vaccinate feral cats, in hopes of reducing the tremendous cat overpopulation on Long Island.

Student Shines The Connetquot Central School District is proud to announce that Idle Hour Elementary School fifthgrader Andrew Mullane received the “Early Act Award” from the Rotary Club of Sayville. This award was presented to Andrew in honor of him being a student with a creative mind and strong leadership skills, which benefit both his school and community. Andrew participates in many extracurricular activities, including serving as a peer mediator,
participating in a crossage collaboration with first-grade students as a classroom buddy, and contributing his time and ideas to the school’s student government meetings. Additionally, Andrew was selected for All-District Chorus and Band based on his musical talents. He was the only band member at Idle Hour selected for the Suffolk County Music Festival. “Andrew is an excellent problem-solver, leader and overall positive role model
to all of the students at Idle Hour Elementary,” said Lara McNally, the school’s youth and family services coordinator. “He participates in all of the community service projects in the building, including food drives, collections for the animal shelter and collections of toiletry items for local families in need. Legislator Tom Muratore recently recognized a team of third graders from Lynwood Elementary School in Farmingville, who won first place in the regional Destination Imagination tournament. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while
incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. This year’s tournament was held at Somers Middle School, Somers, New York. Lynwood’s team, led by teacher Cathy Dulovic finished in first place in their challenge category, and will now advance to the New York State Affiliate
Tournament on April 8th in Binghamton, New York. “My congratulations to these students for working so hard and winning first place in the Destination Imagination competition,” stated Legislator Tom Muratore. “It was my pleasure to recognize their achievement, and I wish them the best of luck in the state tournament.”

Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, recently sent a team of volunteers to prepare brunch for families staying at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park. The 15 volunteers from Team TFCU, the credit union’s employee volunteer and community service group, gave of their time and the credit union also made a donation of $1,000. The residents who stay at Ronald McDonald House are primarily family members of hospitalized children who are receiving treatment and care at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. The hospital is only a short walk from the House. The length of time residents stay at Ronald McDonald House depends on the course of treatment each child is receiving.
Volunteers and staff help to make the residents feel comfortable and supported during their stay at the House. “As we continue our mission of keeping families close in the midst of a medical crisis, we recognize and are so grateful for the support of friends like TFCU. The delicious brunch they prepared for our families and their generous donation make a difficult time much easier for our resident families. While a family is dealing with the pain of having a child in the hospital, knowing they can count on our community makes their journey a little bit easier,” said Matthew Campo, President Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. “Our TFCU volunteers and I had a memorable and gratifying experience at Ronald McDonald House. Before returning to the
hospital to be with their children, Ronald McDonald House residents enjoyed the brunch we made. Members of the Manhasset Junior Coalition, the youth arm of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, recently visited the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program to present a check for $10,000 to support the Adelphi program’s educational forums. After meeting with staff and breast cancer survivors in Garden City, a Junior Coalition member Charlotte Ryan said, “It was incredible to hear what the volunteers at the Adelphi support center do for women diagnosed with breast cancer. It made me proud to be able to help them in any way that we can.” This was echoed by another volunteer Nicole Pullano who said, “Going
to Adelphi and learning about the program helped us learn how much of a difference we are making and how every little bit helps.” The Junior Coalition of MWCABC was formed in 2003 as a charitable organization for Manhasset teenage girls. Elise Dadourian, Junior Coalition coordinator, says their purpose is to provide education and awareness about breast cancer at a teenage appropriate level without fear, to generate compassion and understanding for those afflicted with the disease and the family and friends affected by it, and to join together to raise funds for breast cancer research and patient support programs. Says Hillary Rutter, the
executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, “These young women set an admirable example of community service.” The funds are being used to support educational programs such as “Feel Better and Have More Energy After Breast Cancer” on May 1st and “Using Mindfulness and Meditation to Cope with Breast Cancer” on May 22nd, both held at Adelphi in Garden City. Dancing Classroom Fourth-grade students at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently showcased their newly acquired ballroom dancing skills during the school’s fourth annual “Dancing Classrooms” performance.
Students spent two physical education classes per week learning such popular ballroom dances as the merengue, fox trot, rumba, swing, tango and Viennese waltz before showcasing their skills before proud family and friends at Oakdale-
Bohemia Middle School. Dancing Classrooms is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994, with a mission to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem in children through the practice of social dance.

CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS - On March 28th, Councilman Kevin J. LaValle hosted the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program at the Selden Fire Department headquarters. More than 150 people attended the event where representatives from the National Guard and Department of Homeland Security discussed what to do, and what not to do, in case of an emergency. The two hour training session provided residents with the tools and resources to prepare them for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to predisaster conditions. Each family that participated received a free Citizen Preparedness Corps Response Starter Kit.

Newfield Goes Bald
Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School recently organized and hosted a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising event, raising over $20,000 for research into finding a cure for childhood cancer. The two week fundraising efforts culminated in a morning head shaving event with 50 students, Newfield Principal Scott Graviano, administrators and teachers all going bald for a cause. “We are incredibly proud of all the students and staff at Newfield for their unwavering drive to participate and give back to those less fortunate,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “The efforts of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation hits close to home for our Middle Country community as several students in our District have been faced with battling cancer at such a young age. It’s heartening to see everyone come together to honor the students who have passed, currently fighting cancer
or are in remission.” As students, teachers and administrators honored loved ones by getting their heads shaved, the Newfield High School community turned out in high numbers with an infectious energy and spirit. The event commenced with Newfield teacher Keith Hassett’s bagpipe performance, in traditional Irish dress. The festive atmosphere only grew throughout the morning with live music, Irish step dancing by eight members of the Mulvihill Lynch School Irish Dance and a growing number of participants braving the shave. “The turnout and response we received over the past two weeks perfectly encapsulates the values and character of the students at Newfield,” said Scott Graviano, Newfield High School Principal. “Our students are always seeking new avenues to become engaged members of the Middle Country community and I’m honored to have helped the students facilitate such an extraordinary
success alongside Assistant Principal’s Kevin Richman, Kim Pelan and Mark Palios.” The head shaving event was hosted in Newfield’s Cosmetology Center – equipped with barber chairs, electric hair clippers and a special arc of green balloons.
