with Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Not enough time to move? Try moving more while you perform routine tasks. Start by taking one weekly meeting to go by walking while you meet. Other options include taking the stairs more often, parking farther out or taking stretch breaks throughout the day. Play with Fido – Most pet owners will tell you that having a pet can relieve stress and boost overall happiness. But did you know that people who walk their dogs are more likely to get the recommended amount of physical activity than those who don’t. According to one study, dog-walkers got an average of 30 minutes more exercise a day than non-walkers. Make it a Family Affair – You don’t need to break the bank to move more with your kids. There are numerous tips to keep your family active on the

cheap. And if the weather is bad or outdoor activities are out of the question, try dancing, playing or cleaning indoors. Want to get out? Go for a walk around the mall or check out recreation centers in your neighborhood. Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Drawing Inspiration Members of the Connetquot High School Art Club and National Art Honor Society recently took part in an in-depth workshop with assistance from the representatives of the Long Island Children’s Museum, drawing inspiration from the work of Willem de Kooning. After both learning and examining the artwork of Willem de Kooning, the talented artists created a

series of life drawings using him as inspiration. The students enhanced their original pieces of work by painting the composition on canvas using materials provided by the LICM. They were also joined by Lauren Plate, 2010 Connetquot High School graduate and current LICM art program manager, along with teachers John Hargrave and Ross Grandin, all of whom

assisted throughout the workshop. Festival Concert Musical mastery was on full display at the 60th annual Sachem Central School District Elementary Music Festival Concert held at Sachem High School North on March 6th. Nearly 300 students from all 10 elementary buildings came together to put on a spectacular performance. The performers were chosen by their respective music teachers based on

a comprehensive audition process and each student committed to three outof-school rehearsals to prepare for the concert. Students performing with the band, orchestra and chorus were directed by Ms. Krug, Ms. MontanyeMcBride and Ms. Murphy, respectively. The chorus was accompanied by Mrs. Kelting and assisted by Ms. Schievelbein. Additionally, Ms. Schaefer assisted the

The Connetquot Central School District is proud to announce that Connetquot High School science research teacher John Halloran has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2018” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. Mr. Halloran will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 15th, along with 11 other teachers across Long Island. He was nominated for the honor by Connetquot Class of 2017 valedictorian Mit Patel, who is currently attending Harvard University. “Mr. Halloran provided me with not only a realistic view of the world but armed me with a mentality that allowed me to overcome challenges,” said Mit. “It would be a grave injustice to just describe him as very knowledgeable and a good teacher. I feel his goal wasn’t to just

teach us about biology and research, it was more than that, it was to prepare us for the world.” A teacher for 18 years in the district, Mr. Halloran has taught Regents biology and chemistry, Advanced Placement biology, as well as Sports Science. He has also taught an elective class in forensics. Five years ago, he started a research program that now occupies his full course load. This year, a team of students from the school and working under Mr. Halloran’s guidance were named a semifinalist for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. He is also a volunteer in his spare time, coaching his two sons in basketball for the past six years. “As the inaugural teacher of our high school’s science research program, Mr. Halloran is helping to shape the future by expanding and deepening students’

passion for science through the introduction of real world applications and practical learning experiences in what feels like a professional laboratory setting,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams. “His methodology for teaching is in direct alignment with our district’s core mission of providing students with meaningful, engaging lessons that help to develop them into well-rounded adults and productive citizens.” Mr. Halloran graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Dowling College. Prior to teaching, Mr. Halloran worked for Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” said Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Mr. Halloran offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents and countless hours of attention. Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C ultivating beautiful blooms is a popular pastime for gardeners near and far. While gazing at a yard full of vibrant colors or enjoying the aroma of freshly cut blooms is enough for many gardeners, others may want to embrace a long-enduring tradition — growing edible ﬂowers.

Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe. Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible. Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed. That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen. To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use. Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

Chamomile: This plant features small, daisy-type ﬂowers that can be used in treats and teas. Cilantro: The ﬂowers from the cilantro plant can be eaten, just as the leaves and the seeds that form the spice coriander.

Basil Blossoms: It may be customary to pinch off the blossoms of basil, which come in colors from white to lavender in order to stimulate growth of the leaves of the plant. However, the blossoms, which are more mild than the leaves, can be tasty as well.

Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the ﬂowers of fennel have a subtle licorice ﬂavor.

Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the ﬁrst step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and ﬁnding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal. There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Literacy students participated in a six-week Family Health and Wellness Program offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension. Nutritionist educators, some bilingual, taught students the longrange benefits to healthy lifestyle changes. Students completed meal-planning exercises and created weekly budgets using information they acquired from local supermarket circulars. The Family Health and Wellness Program educates

on the importance of food safety. Wash hands with soap and water, sanitize surfaces, keep appliances clean, clean sweep refrigerated foods once a week, rinse produce, separate foods when preparing and serving, use a food thermometer when cooking, cook food to safe internal temperatures, and keep foods at a safe temperature. ESL Teacher Mary Meyer said, “This program is very important for our students. They garner information about what’s out in the

community to help them make healthy decisions for themselves and their families from reading flyers and circulars, to reading labels, to learning how to substitute healthy ingredients in a recipe.” Insulated lunch bags were handed out to the students at the final presentation silk-screened with a message, “Save Time & Money Pack a Lunch.” Students were pleased with the gift and promised to use the resources and tools they were given.

Welcome Home Baskets programs and career paths available, and discussed the Teen Advisory Council’s upcoming project, in which teen members will be assembling “Welcome Home” baskets for Habitat families as housewarming gifts. These baskets will contain supplies such as housewares and cleaning products. The teens also learned about the Allstate

Foundation’s “Good Starts Young” initiative, which sponsors the Library’s teen skill building and community service programming. To help the teens create the Habitat for Humanity baskets, the Teen Advisory Council was presented with a generous $250 student grant from the Allstate Foundation’s WE Volunteer Now program.

Each year in March, Women’s History Month is celebrated in Suffolk County. In 2002, the Legislature passed a Resolution (No. 7862002) stating that each Suffolk County Legislator shall select a “Woman of Distinction” who resides in his/her respective Legislative District to be honored as such. For 2018, Legislator Tom Muratore named Ellen Morrison, a resident of Selden for over 45 years. Mrs. Morrison was joined by her husband Bruce,

President of the Selden Civic Organization as she received her proclamation to commemorate the event at the March 20th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Ellen’s extensive volunteer work includes serving on the Bicycle Path Elementary School PTA, leading her sons’ Boy Scout Troops, and helping the American Cancer Society. In 2016, she helped organize projects in conjunction with the Selden Civic Association, including community

clean-ups and fundraising activities. Also, Ellen is instrumental in the success of the Selden Civic Association’s monthly food drives. “Ellen’s dedication and commitment to the Selden community is greatly appreciated and worthy of acknowledgment,” stated Legislator Muratore. “I applaud her efforts and take great pleasure in recognizing her as a ‘Woman of Distinction’ in my district.”

Sandra Rubin started her career in the Connetquot Central School District in 1972. She began as an elementary school teacher, and then taught the Gifted and Talented program (now known as C-Quest) for 13 years. Mrs. Rubin then

served in an administrative position at Cherokee Street Elementary School and then Edith L. Slocum Elementary School. After a brief retirement, she returned as interim assistant superintendent and then moved on to her current position as principal of Idle Hour Elementary School. Susan P. White began her administrative career as an assistant principal at Cherokee Street Elementary School before being appointed as principal of John Pearl Elementary School, a role she has held for the past 28 years. Scott Maskin co-founded Bohemia-based SUNation Solar Systems in 2003 and currently serves as president and CEO. Mr. Maskin is also a dedicated supporter of Connetquot’s students and programs, as his children are Connetquot High School graduates.

Housing Grants Awarded Options for Community Living, Inc. has been awarded two contracts under the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) through the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. These NYSSHP

awards – together totaling $230,640 – will enable Options to assist vulnerable Long Island families and single adults residing in the agency’s supportive housing programs. “The NYSSHP awards provide much needed

financial support for Options’ case managers who work directly with residents in our housing programs, which continue to grow,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living.

“Supportive housing allows people to live with dignity in the community. It is the most humane and cost-effective solution to ending homelessness and creating stability for vulnerable people on Long Island.”

Options’ residents pay an affordable rent and case managers make regular home visits to monitor health and safety and teach skills, such as cooking, budgeting and much more so that the residents can live independently. More

More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island. This year’s winners are Miguel and Abby Melendez of Baldwin, New York. In the ten years they have served as volunteers, they have actively participated in Relay For Life, supported Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the

American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, plus patient support including providing more than 150 rides to treatment for patients across Nassau and Queens. “Miguel and Abby are always the first to volunteer to represent the Society,” said Marie Cimaglia, Director of Development for the American Cancer Society. “Their gift of their time and energy is truly amazing and they have become “our go to” team to get the word out about what the Society offers to the community.” The award was presented by Cheryl Ross of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, winner of the 2017 Heart and Soul award. “Accomplishments in curing cancer would not be possible without the dedication of these honorees, Miguel and Abby Melendez, plus thousands of essential volunteers across the Island,” said Cimaglia. “We celebrate all volunteers from every corner of our organization. Because of you, the American Cancer Society is

able continue our mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer,” she added. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been

proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools

and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance

and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest,

dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
