As the schools and students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.

The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any

Letter to the Editor March 25, 2020 Dear Editor: I want to address those on the front lines during these uncertain times. People around the world are watching to see - Can the people of New York handle this crisis successfully? The answer is YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL! Each day all of you are protecting our community. That is something to be extraordinarily proud of. Look to the people you are working with each day to do special things and say to them “We are a team and we are together on this”! “You are the heroes of healthcare”! Continue to have
confidence and pride in what you do every day, our community is thankful! On Long Island and in the Greater NY City region we have the best people -You are the best people! We are made for this challenge! What is our continued focus? To provide the best possible care we can for everybody! We will stay safe using our proper Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) guidelines and techniques. Our health care workers are on the front lines of this pandemic, and the American Heart Association (AHA) is working with them to implement training aids and resources they anticipate needing. For example: in response to
an anticipated possible future shortage of trained ICU personnel utilizing ventilators, the AHA will soon be launching a new course for Oxygenation & Ventilation of the COVID-19 patient (which will be available to health care providers worldwide by March 31). In conclusion to the initial question posed today, remember: The answer is - YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL! Thanks to ALL of the Heroes of Healthcare!

On March 2, 10th and 11th graders in Carolyn Paul’s and Megan Faeger’s English classes at Connetquot High School visited Helen B. Duffield Elementary School to help their younger peers celebrate the birthday of classic children’s author Dr. Seuss. Prior to this, the high schoolers spent a week meticulously
planning Dr. Seuss-themed lessons catered to students at each elementary grade level. These ranged from decorating paper top hats with story elements from “The Cat in the Hat” to a planting activity inspired by “The Lorax” to writing letters to Horton from “Horton Hears a Who!” Through leading the elementary schoolers in

BOE Recognizes Student-Scientists, Spellers And Staff
At the most recent meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, the board honored a group of spectacular elementary school spellers, four high school science research students and Cayuga Elementary School teacher Jaimie DiPalma for her wide-ranging efforts assisting in the celebration of P.S. I Love You Day districtwide. To begin the recognitions, the Board honored elementary school students who were either
the winner or runnerup for their individual building’s annual spelling bee. Continuing the recognitions, Sachem High School East science research students Ryan Meehan and Asweel Mehaboob and Sachem High School North science research students Anika Banerjee and Burak Buyukbayraktar were recognized for their outstanding achievements in science research, such as invitations to present at prestigious conferences or the opportunity to
publish their research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. To conclude the recognitions, Cayuga Elementary School teacher and co-director of P.S. I Love You Day Jaimie DiPalma shared the amazing impact the P.S. I Love You Day initiative has had throughout the district and thanked the Board for its continued support and dedication to the social and emotional health of all students.

Kitchens are popular gathering spots in many homes. That popularity is reflected in various ways, including how many homeowners choose to remodel their kitchens. A 2019 report from the home renovation and design resource Houzz found that kitchens were the most popular room to renovate. Homeowners considering kitchen remodels should know that the Houzz report also indicated that spending on kitchen remodels increased by 27 percent. Homeowners concerned by the cost of remodeling a kitchen should know that there are ways to give kitchens a whole new feel without breaking the bank. Appliances Consumer Reports notes that luxury home buyers expect high-end features,
including professional ranges and built-in refrigerators that match the surrounding cabinetry. However, many mainstream brands offer “faux pro� features that can equal more expensive alternatives. Consumer Reports even notes that many budget-friendly faux pro appliances outperformed their high-end counterparts in terms of reliability. Countertops Countertops tend to capture the eye’s attention when walking into a kitchen. Outdated and/or damaged countertops grab that attention for all the wrong reasons, while updated countertops made from today’s most popular materials provide that wow factor homeowners seek. If granite is a must-have, Consumer Reports notes that homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by choosing granite from remnants at the stone yard. If marble is your ideal countertop, save money by choosing a domestic product as opposed to one imported from overseas. Cabinets Custom-built cabinets may be a dream, but they tend to be a very expensive one. Such cabinets are designed to adhere to the dimensions of the kitchen, and Consumer Reports notes that they can cost tens of thousands of dollars. If that estimate would bust your budget, examine the current layout of the existing cabinets. If the layout is fine but the cabinets need work, you can give them a whole new look by refinishing them. If the cabinets must go, stock units or semi-custom cabinets can provide a new look without busting the budget. Kitchen remodels can be expensive. But there are many affordable ways to revamp a kitchen.

The Choice For Staying Put Or Moving On Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale� signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes
permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six
years before selling. Since then, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008
recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. the PSEG Foundation are supporting the Island Harvest Food Bank in its response to critical community needs throughout Long Island as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The mission of Island Harvest Food Bank is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. The PSEG Foundation provided the Island Harvest Food Bank a grant of $45,000 to address rising food insecurity, including children who do not have access to school feeding programs because their schools are temporarily closed because of the public health crisis. Island Harvest Food Bank, which relies mostly on donations of surplus food by commercial food establishments, wholesalers, supermarkets, and individuals, has seen a decline in those donations recently. The grant will purchase food to ensure an uninterrupted supply for people who rely on supplemental feeding programs served by Island Harvest Food Bank. “PSEG Long Island

As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions.
Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching
