Guide Dog Lesson

onnetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students recently welcomed a group of guide dogs and their volunteer handlers to learn about the role volunteers and their canine companions play within the community. Members of the Guide Dog Foundation described to students the important work the dogs do for people who are blind or visually impaired. Thanks to those volunteers who took the time to visit.

Students at Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School recently participated in the Save A Life Tour program to learn the importance of safe driving. The program focuses on dangerous driving situations such as distracted driving, impaired driving, seat belt usage and others to demonstrate what potential deadly consequences can occur from poor driving choices. Students learned about driving risks through video presentations, speaking presentations, interactive simulators and pre and post surveys. High school students got behind the wheel during an interactive demonstration to experience how difficult driving can be when there are distractions. After the assembly, students signed a pledge card and received a wristband to remind them to practice safe driving.

Spring is like fireworks, exciting and entertaining. For me, spring is when flowers bloom. Spring is when you pick flowers for people you love. Spring is when all of the birds start chirping, Tweet, tweet, tweet. Spring is when nature screams GREEN! People jump like bunnies. The waves sing a lullaby at night. The crickets play a violin with their legs, And the trees come back to life. Bees start buzzing, Buzz buzz. Spring is honey, so sweet.

PERFECT PEN PALS - Connetquot Central School District High School ninth grade students recently visited Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to meet their first grade student pen pals. The high school students had been writing letters to the elementary school students to encourage a love of reading and writing. During the visit, the first graders illustrated stories and wrote notes as their ninth grade pen pals motivated them to express themselves in different ways.

INDOOR RECESS - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School announced the introduction of a new “Indoor Recess” program. Students will be able to participate in activities to keep them active and busy indoors during the cold winter months. Both the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement for Children (CFAC) and the Edward J. Bosti PTA contributed to funding this program by donating items such as modeling clay, board games, puzzles and a variety of physical education equipment.

100 DAYS OF LEARNING - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School, Cherokee Street Elementary School and Edward J. Bosti Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of the school year with special activities. Students celebrated by dressing up as 100-year-old people and parading around school while older students cheered them on. Students also celebrated by creating Wacky Number Bond Monsters and colorful plastic cups.

This environmental award has been established in memory of Islip Town resident, environmentalist and naturalist Charles Pulaski, a carpenter by trade, who cared deeply about the natural world around him. He enthusiastically embraced the environmental movement in the 1970’s, single handedly building and placing hundreds of bluebird houses throughout the Town of Islip. Pulaski also planted several memorial gardens and was successful in

convincing officials to preserve hundreds of acres of parkland. He shared his enthusiasm for environmental preservation to thousands of people, especially to youngsters and teens to encourage them to “save their world.” The presentation of the Charles Pulaski Memorial Award was a tradition celebrated by the Town for more than 30 years, but was last presented in 2012 because of budgetary constraints. Thanks to the generosity of members of ITEC and others, the award has been resurrected. “We are extremely grateful to our friends on the Town’s Environmental Council for helping us bring back a long standing and important tradition of recognizing students who understand the importance of preserving our environment,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

KEEPING PETS WARM - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students collected blankets, towels and treats to be used for abandoned animals at local animal shelters during the severe winter weather. Fifth grade peer leaders assisted their class in collecting donated items. The collection was part of the school’s participation in the Youth & Family Services program, which provides various services to students, families and organizations in the Connetquot area.

STRONG READING - Connetquot Central School District High School junior English students recently visited Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students as part of the District’s Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program. Sixty students from the high school rotated around the elementary school classrooms teaching non-fiction reading lessons to instill a love of reading in the younger students. The PARP program is designed to encourage parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes a day.

Cards For A Cause Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several

brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign

for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

STEP RIGHT UP - Connetquot Central School District Slocum Elementary School fifth grade students recently worked with the Cirque du Jour circus group to put together an entertaining performance for their fellow classmates. Alongside members of the circus company, the students were able to perform the different circus-related acts they learned. These exciting performances included acting as clowns, stilt walking, spinning plates, juggling, Chinese Yo-Yo and perfecting the act of devil sticks. The objective of the program is to excite students to participate more fully in physical education and cultural arts activities.

SHIELD OF KINDNESS - Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School students learned about positive character traits during the District’s Random Act of Kindness Week. Third grade students helped build the “Kindness Shield” message board and were given interactive lessons on fostering friendships. Students also enjoyed various crafts and delicious treats.

Educator Recognized

Longwood School District educator Deborah Lang received the highest recognition by the Town of Brookhaven Office of Women’s Services during their 29th Annual Women’s Recognition Night. She was among 12 Brookhaven residents recognized for excellence in their professional endeavors at an awards ceremony, held at Brookhaven Town Hall on March 19th. For more than 15 years, Ms. Lang has served as a technology teacher at the junior high school where she has played a vital role in establishing and creating opportunities for students to learn, share and expand their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She volunteers countless hours on STEM-related committees including

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI), Longwood Youth Sport Association (LYSA) and First Lego League (FLL). In 2001, Ms. Lang founded Longwood’s FIRST Robotics Team #564. Through her mentorship and guidance, the team has received the prestigious Chairman’s Award twice, the Spirit Award four times and the Judges Award twice. Most recently, Ms. Lang launched a Junior FIRST Lego League for students age 6-9. Today, there are more than 13 teams of six students and the program continues to grow and expand. “Ms. Lang inspires her students to greatness, and judging from the emotion in her voice, it is clear that they also inspire her,” said parent John Hernandez.

Each candidate, nominated by a community member or co-worker, works or lives in Brookhaven, and the town’s Women’s Advisory Board selected them based on their resumes and recommendations. Assistant Superintendent for Student and Community Services Debra Winter nominated Ms. Lang for her extraordinary talent of working with students and parents. “Deb is an exceptional, selfless, unique woman who has had a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of students and members of the community,” said Ms. Winter. “She has a gift that one could only hope to possess, and it shows in the respect and admiration she receives from her students.”

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden recently congratulated Ms. Emily Sciame and her students, along with YFS Coordinator Mr. Ryan McGuckin. Ms. Sciame’s students have collected blankets, towels, sheets and treats to be donated to local animal shelters. Mr. McGuckin brought along his 5th grade Peer Leaders on February 12th

to help the students sort the collections. Mrs. Sciame is very proud of her students, and gave a shout out to Mr. McGuckin and his Peer Leaders for their assistance. After sorting the donations Mrs. Sciame congratulated her students for collecting and sorting, and the Peer Leaders for helping organize the donations. The blankets, sheets,

towels and treats will come in handy for the residents of the local animal shelters, especially with the severe weather the area has suffered in the last few weeks. Congratulations to all the students and teachers, as well as the members of the EJ Bosti community that contributed to this worthwhile project.

Guide Dog Visitors

Mr. Ryan McGuckin, Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator at Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, welcomed over a dozen beautiful dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, to the school on February 11th. Members of the Guide Dog Foundation had been invited by Mr. McGuckin to speak to the students, so they could learn about the special role these volunteers, and their canine friends play in our world. Mr. McGuckin explained

that these wonderful animals are trained by volunteers to work with people who are blind or visually impaired, free of charge. Rose, one of the volunteer handlers, explained that these dogs help promote independence, enhanced mobility and companionship to the visually impaired. The Guide Dog Foundation trains volunteer handlers from all over the U.S. and Canada to work with dogs that can then become so valuable to people in need.

The students were excited to pet their 4-legged visitors and to ask questions of their handlers. Mr. McGuckin, teachers, staff and students thanked the volunteer handlers, and their new four-legged friends, for visiting with them. McGuckin hopes that the children will come away with a deeper appreciation for dogs (and for animals in general) and learn how to be responsible citizens when it comes to the care and safety of our 4-legged friends.

Athletic Achievements

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr. welcomed over 500 parents, teachers, administrators, Board of Education Trustees and one district Superintendent to the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School on March 18th. In a community education forum co-sponsored by Connetquot Parents for Education, four influential education leaders shared information, and answered questions, about the current climate in New York State related to public school students and upcoming exams. Guest speakers included Dr. Joseph Rella, Superintendent of the Comsewogue School District; Jeanette Deutermann, Co-founder of NYS Allies for Public Education &LIOO; Beth Dimino, 8th grade science teacher and President of the Port Jefferson Station Teachers Association; Tony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association, and Daniel Carpenter, a 5th grade student from the Commack School District. Parents and teachers filled the Sycamore auditorium to capacity, carrying signs criticizing Governor Cuomo’s education policies, and his over-testing of their youngsters. Four such Education Forums have already been held on Long Island, which have attracted

thousands of parents and teachers eager to express their frustration, and dissatisfaction with the governor’s education plans. CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., in his comments about the history of these so called ‘education reform

movements’ said: “A child who goes to sleep at night hungry and cold, has no bed to sleep in, lives in a drug infested community, lives in an abusive household, or is surrounded by dysfunction, will not be able to learn in school. It doesn’t matter what these reform ideas are called - Common Core, Race to the Top, America 2000,

CRAZY SPORTS NIGHT - Connetquot Central School District high school recently hosted the 2nd Annual Douglas Sposato Wildlife Garden Scholarship Crazy Sports Night in honor of the beloved high school science teacher, Douglas Sposato, who passed away in 2013. The funds raised from ticket sales at the event go towards a scholarship offered to high school juniors who will work in the high school’s Wildlife Garden, which was originally planted by Mr. Sposato. FAMILY LITERACY - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School PTA hosted their annual Family Literacy Night, an event where students are given the chance to share one of their favorite books in a creative way with peers, families and teachers. Students create trifold display boards to showcase the fiction or non-fiction book they have chosen and incorporate specific themes and elements, allowing them to present their knowledge on the book. School To Watch The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce that Longwood Junior High School has been redesignated as an Essential Elements School to Watch by the New York State Education Department and the Essential Elements Schools to Watch (EESTW) leadership team. This prestigious designation recognizes Longwood Junior High School’s continued commitment to enhancing school programs and practices. Originally designated in March 2012, the junior high school is one of only 18 schools throughout New York State to receive this award. In a letter sent to the district by the State Education Department, Longwood Junior High was commended for developing a model educational program. “Through this rigorous application process and your successful endeavors, the junior high school will be recognized as both a National and State School To Watch,” wrote Marybeth Casey, EESTW state director. Longwood Junior High School was selected by state leaders for its academic distinction, its responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. In addition,

the junior high school was proven to show strong leadership, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement. The EESTW is a state administered national program that seeks to identify middle grades schools that adhere to a rigorous set of criteria and are on a pathway of continuous improvement. Each school earning the designation holds that honor for three years. They must reapply and be reevaluated to continue the honor of calling itself a School to Watch. “Through the support of our Board of Education, administration, parents and community members we are able to continue the enhancement of the programs we offer,” said Junior High School Principal Adam DeWitt. “We are proud to promote academic achievement in a safe and caring learning environment where each and every student is positioned to succeed in high school and beyond.” Longwood Junior High School will be formally recognized at the upcoming National Schools to Watch Conference, June 24th27th, in Washington DC.

DANCING CLASSROOMS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 4th grade students recently showcased their newly acquired ballroom dancing skills during the first ever “Dancing Classroom” program. The program was held for students, teachers, family and friends at the Oakdale Bohemia Middle School. Students had been learning and practicing their moves during their Physical Education classes for a month in preparation. They demonstrated their talents in dances like Merengue, Fox Trot, Rumba, Swing, Tango and the Viennese Waltz.
