Sachem High School East senior Ciara Torres recently had her painting, “Still-life in Tempera” accepted into the Juried Art Show at The Atelier at Flowerfield. Ciara’s painting was created in Ms. DelVallez’s Drawing and Painting 1 class. For the assignment, students were required to work from observation and develop forms using a limited pallet of premium tempera paint. Ciara paid attention to detail and often stayed after school to perfect her work. The art event provides art students with an opportunity to build their portfolio, as well as promotion and exposure of their works in The Atelier’s exhibition hall for a four-week period. The juried show also provides the winners with a scholarship to one free class and an Atelier oneyear membership.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Now Offering Barnyard Buddies Program For Children Ages 2-5 Years

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted and there is a 3.25% processing fee on credit card transactions. To learn more or enroll your child

REMARKABLE REPTILES - Libraries have something for everyone and wonderful ways of bringing us all together. Family programs present a collective experience encouraging learning, growth, and enjoyment. Despite the weather, many members joined us at Connetquot Public Library on Saturday, March 12 for a morning of family fun. Those who attended had the great pleasure of meeting “live animal ambassadors” up close. The Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) returned to the library once again, this time to introduce the remarkable reptiles found in nature. Among the live ambassadors were turtles, snakes, geckos, a blue-tongued skink, and an Argentine black and white tegu. Everyone had the opportunity to learn about the lives and habitats of their new friends and be inspired to connect with nature. It certainly was an extra special treat for our youngest members to touch and pet amazing reptiles. These unique interactions are an integral part of developing a positive relationship with nature and the environment. The library continues to offer many diverse programs for parents and children of all ages to come together and enjoy. Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Those interested in making contributions of clothing or gift cards, should call Ethical Friends of Children at 516-2805526 or email efoc@ehsli. org

Cherokee Street Collects Socks For Ukraine And Local Organizations What started as a Writers Workshop unit turned into a sock fundraiser for Cherokee Street Elementary School students in Karyn Goncalves’ and Melissa Comis’ third grade class. The students collected 2,149 pair of new socks to give to the East Islip Ambulance Company, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless and the citizens of Ukraine. During the Writers Workshop lesson, the students listened to a

speech written by United Nations delegate Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a Canadian environmental activist who urges others to act with the future in mind. The students modeled speeches after CullisSuzuki, persuading the school community to donate socks. During their research, the class had learned that the homeless are particularly in need warm socks. To broaden their campaign, the students made posters for their

cause and placed bins around the school. They initially collected 1,149 pair of socks and then received a 1,000-sock donation from apparel company Bombas. Ms. Goncalves said the students were excited that their cause received such traction in the community. “Even though this cause is now finished, our ideas for giving back to the community are not over,” she said.

Reminder: Tick Season Is Around The Corner Legislator Leslie Kennedy would like to remind residents that spring is already here, and with it, tick season. In Suffolk County, we have three species of ticks to be careful of, namely: the Blacklegged Tick, the Lone Star Tick and the American Dog Tick. Black Legged Ticks The Black Legged Tick (deer tick) can spread Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Babesiosis. Lyme disease is by far the most common and can cause complications such as recurring swelling, painful joints, temporary facial paralysis and/or heart problems if left untreated.

A characteristic sign of Lyme disease is a red circular rash that may appear a few days to a month at the site of the bite. This occurs in approximately 60%-80% of cases. American Dog Tick The American Dog Tick typically transmits Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Tularemia. RMSF is characterized by a sudden onset of moderate to high fever, severe headache, deep muscle tissue pain, chills and rash. Lone Star Tick These ticks cause four main diseases, but the most recent one that has been making headlines is called Alpha-gal. Alpha-gal is

a red meat allergy thought to be caused by bites of Lone Star Ticks. Symptoms may start 3-6 hours after consuming red meat and may include severe itching, hives and, in severe cases, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, shortness of breath and loss of consciousness. Personal Protection You can protect yourself from Lyme’s Disease and other tick borne illnesses through the follow simple steps: -Wear light-colored clothing -Wear long pants and sleeves -Tuck your pants into your socks -Tuck you shirt into your pants

-Use tick repellent as directed -Walk along the center of the trail -Conduct frequent clothing checks -Once home, dry clothes on the highest setting for at least 10 minutes to kill any ticks -Carefully inspect your body for ticks -Keep pets from tick infested areas and check them before entering the house Suggestions For Homeowners Ticks do not jump, fly or fall from trees. They crawl close to the ground on leaves, brush and tall grasses. Homeowners should keep lawns mowed, and bushes cut back, remove debris and move children’s toys away from the edges of yards.

Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational field program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later.
