The Suffolk County Legislature under the leadership of Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory held the first county-wide reception for each Woman of Distinction from all 18 legislative districts and announced the countywide winner, Gail Lynch Bailey. “Is is a great honor for me to hold this reception for Ms. Lynch-Bailey and the 17 Women of Distinction from other Legislative Districts,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “All 18 of these Women of Distinction have incredible resumes and extraordinary records of service to their communities and all of Suffolk County.” County-wide winner Gail Lynch-Bailey is from Legislator Sarah Anker’s District 6. She was chosen by the Suffolk

County Women’s Advisory Commission. “It is my distinct honor to recognize Mrs. Gail Lynch-Bailey for the 2016 Suffolk County Woman of Distinction award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and tireless volunteer efforts toward improving her community,” said Legislator Anker. “Throughout her years as a community volunteer, Gail has been at the forefront of many successful community projects, including the effort to enhance Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island. of an individual who is truly dedicated to their community and is greatly deserving of this honor.” Ms. Lynch-Bailey is President of the Longwood Public Library’s Board of Trustees, The Longwood Alliance, and the Middle Island Civic Association. She is the past president of the Longwood PTA Council, co-founder of the Middle Country Road Task Force, and member of the Town of Brookhaven Accessory Apartment Review Board. For the past several years, Ms. Lynch-Bailey has worked to enhance Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island, including the dedication of six granite veterans’ monuments, the restoration of the park’s invasive-ridden western section and hiking trail, the restoration of the one-

room schoolhouse, and the creation of the Longwood Victory community garden. Ms. Lynch-Bailey also coordinates the annual Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies at Bartlett Pond Park’s Veterans Walk. In 1999, she received the New York State PTA Distinguished Service Award. In 2003 she received the St. Pius X Award for 10 years of service as the catechist at St. Frances Cabrini RC Church in Coram. In 2011, she was honored as the first female recipient of the Longwood Board of Education’s Carl Verdi Community Pride Award. The Easter feast does not call for sentimentality; it is known for fun in legend and in reality. In Christian faith, it blesses the resurrection; old customs show bunnies in Easter egg action. Some countries favor a Cuckoo or Fox to spread joy; kids do love this suspension be it girl or boy. Eggs represents the symbol of fertility and new life. Hares and rabbits show to multiply a real strong drive. To assist in the festivities, the Easter bunny was born, kept busy with hiding fancy eggs in pastures of corn. Winter’s roughness can soon be left behind. Tulips and crocuses shoot thru earth to please the mind. Even when there happens to be a damp and cool day, we know for a fact, that spring is now on its way!

100 Days Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, Cherokee, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, Idle Hour Elementary School, John Pearl Elementary School, Edith Slocum Elementary School and Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently celebrated the 100th day of the school year by taking part in a variety of clever, creative, activities using the number 100. Some students dressed up as 100 year old citizens, and took part in a parade on the first and second

floor of the school, while upper classmen cheered as they paraded by. Sycamore Avenue Elementary School math teacher Mrs. McInerney displayed a winding path of 100 minions and challenged all the students in the school to guess how long the path is in feet and inches. Students also made necklaces using 100 colored beads, or 100 pieces of cereal. Some students used 100 colorful plastic cups to build a pyramid, while another group created patterns using 100 squares. Using colorful balloons, students

Sharp Shooters took part in a relay race that ended when they sat on, and popped, each of those 100 balloons! Another group of students had the chance to demonstrate that they were ‘100 days smarter’ by listing how much they had learned, and how much more mature they had become, having completed more than the first half of the school year! Celebrating the 100th Day of School theme helped students improve their math skills and sharpened students’ observation skills.

several spots on the floor. Edward J. Bosti Elementary School teacher Ms. Tara West proudly announced the winners as Dylann Grable and Sheeraz Hussein (4th grade); and Jillian Lopez and Bobby Elliott (5th grade). Sheeraz Hussein earned a 4th place

finish while 5th grader Bobby Elliott finished in 6th place overall. This year over 8,000 students representing school districts throughout the Town of Islip took part in the competition.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School senior Robert Subtirelu, 17, was recently announced as the winner of the 2016 Prudential Spirit of the Community Award. Subtirelu received the award in recognition of

his exemplary volunteer service to residents of San Marcos, Guatemala. Subtirelu also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award on behalf of United States President Barack Obama. Both awards are presented annually to

the top 10 percent of all Prudential Spirit Award applicants in each state and the District of Columbia by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

LESSON ON GOVT - On March 16th, Councilman Kevin LaValle met with Girl Scout Unit 169 at Brookhaven Town Hall. The unit, which is based in Selden, was there to speak with the Councilman and learn more about Town government. The girls are working toward their citizenship and philanthropy badges. Councilman LaValle discussed his role in the community as an elected official.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES students from Deborah Neri’s class at Brookhaven Learning Center @ Samoset Middle School located in the Sachem School District went on a field trip to the Town of Brookhaven’s recycling facility where they learned about the new recycling system nicknamed the “Green Stream Machine.” The mission of BLC @ Samoset is to encourage independence and selfadvocacy so students can successfully transition from the school environment to post school options. Students learn the

concepts of counting, sorting objects, and categorizing with pictures and words. These concepts were taken to a new level when they visited the recycling facility and saw the concepts come to life. The tour included students observing how garbage is scanned, sorted, separated, and prepared for recycling. “We learned that the stream machine is the latest technology in recycling and the Town of Brookhaven is using it for efficiency and to save taxpayers’ money,” said Neri. Single stream recycling allows residents to place all

recycled materials into one container at the curb. This simplifies the recycling process for residents and the town. Students were given bright orange safety vests and hard hats. Joseph, a student in the PatchogueMedford UFSD district, said, “It was cool to see the recyclables on the conveyor belt.” They also saw how all the recyclables were crushed and compacted into cubes. Emily, from the Commack UFSD district, said, “I liked the machines and it was interesting to see how they worked.”

More than 700 third and fourth graders from Coram and West Middle Island Elementary Schools worked collaboratively, without leaving their classrooms, to complete curriculum based research projects. Recently, the students met face to face for the very first time. The students utilized Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to conduct independent research on cross curricular literary instruction. Focusing primarily on technology,

the students created slideshow projects and provided feedback to their partners located in a different classroom in a different school. “It was fun because you can use Google to create the project the way you like,” said Coram student Summer Vitale. “We chose which animal we wanted to study, and it was interesting to make friends with people from a different school.” As students met for the first time, they were able

to share experiences and demonstrate their projects utilizing QR codes. Partners selected projects to review, scanned the QR Codes and recorded at least one new found piece of information. Presentations included animation, graphic layout and design, importing video and photographs. During the afternoon workshops, parents were able to utilize their own devices to explore the projects utilizing QR codes.

Suffolk County Community College Culinary students are regional champions for the third consecutive year and tops in the Culinary Knowledge Bowl after bettering five other college teams at the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) Regional Conference in Atlanta this week. “Our team’s excellent academic preparation, culinary talents, hard work and coaching leadership were a winning combination and I am proud of our team and

Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl, created in 1992 and sponsored by American Technical Publishers, is a “Jeopardy”-style culinary competition named in honor of past ACF national

president Baron H. Galand, CEC®, AAC®, HOF. Galand was a champion for junior members and encouraged them to get involved in their profession outside the kitchen.
