These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service, and volunteer firefighters will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. More than 200 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

In 2016, FASNY released an economic impact report, which quantifies the value of the volunteer fire service and its associated tax savings throughout the state. The report concluded that the annual cost of a replacement, all-paid fire service would be $3.87 billion. Furthermore, property taxes in New York State would rise by an estimated average of 26.5%. These figures do not factor in the costs of acquiring the necessary

Lesson in Recycling After learning about the basics of recycling in their classroom, Slocum Elementary School second-graders gained a deeper understanding about the process when Danielle Wynn, a recycling educator from the Islip Town Department of Environmental Control, visited the building.
During the in-school program, Ms. Wynn explained to the students the importance of the Islip Town We Recycle America Proudly program, the schedule for collection, and the types of materials able to be recycled. Her presentation also included a recycling film and a demonstration on how
students could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter and a blender. Lastly, students learned how many items they use each day, including T-shirts, pencils, tote bags and footwear, are made using recycled materials.

Rocking the Socks Students in Michelle Russo’s English class at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently promoted awareness and showed support for individuals suffering from the rare skin condition epidermolysis bullosa by wearing socks on their hands as part of the wildly popular “Rock
the Socks” campaign. The cause is near and dear to Ms. Russo, whole close friends, Liz Cadmus and Nick Cadmus, have a daughter, Makenzie, who was born with the disease that causes painful blisters and skin erosions due to being born without skin on most of her limbs. In their efforts to raise awareness for this terrible
disease, the Cadmus family started the Rock the Socks Foundation as a way of sharing Makenzie’s story and raising money to help combat the effects of the disease. Since its inception, it has gathered the attention of not only thousands of individuals, but celebrities and professional athletes as well.

Students of the Month Recognized The Middle Country Central School District recently honored their March students of the month at a recent Board of Education meeting. Centereach High School senior David Ebanks, Newfield High School senior Michael Barnum, Dawnwood Middle School sixth grade student Abigail Jones, and Selden Middle School sixth grade student Logan Aybar were all recognized for their academic excellence, athletic achievements, perseverance and positive attitudes. “Each month, it brings all of us here at Middle Country Central School District such joy to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “Watching our students grow in our school system brings an overwhelming
feeling of fulfillment. Their successes here are just the beginning, and we can’t wait to watch all they accomplish in the months and years to come. Congratulations to all honorees.” Centereach High School senior and March student of the month recipient David Ebanks was chosen for his academic excellence and consistent “can-do” attitude - even in the face of obstacles. Teachers and administrators have recognized David as a respectful young man who walks around the school with a smile on his face, brightening the days of all who interact with him. Despite his wide range of successes academically and in extracurricular activities, he has remained modest and humble. Last month, David was honored during the Town of Brookhaven’s Black History Month Celebration,
recognizing him for his outstanding academic accomplishments throughout his high school career. David continued to thrive academically even while challenging himself by enrolling in collegelevel statistic and English courses during the current school year. Due to David’s hard work, he will graduate this June with an Advanced Regents diploma. David has left an invaluable mark on Centereach High School through his efforts as a peer tutor and his active role in the Bible Club. David is still uncertain of where he will continue his education next fall, but the University of Central Florida and LIU at CW Post are among the schools he is considering. Michael Barnum is a senior at Newfield High School and recipient of March student of the month. Michael’s journey during his time at Newfield
has been one of great success and resilience. Following his freshman and sophomore year achievements, both in the classroom and on the basketball court, Michael received unimaginable news in March 2015. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Michael spent the next eleven months keeping up with his academics through home teaching even while facing intense chemotherapy treatment. Michael’s diagnosis never altered his steadfast commitment to his studies and trajectory of excellence. He is in remission, and will be graduating on time this June with a potential to graduate with over 18 college credits. Michael has applied to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and is planning to major in psychology. Michael has inspired his peers and the entire staff at Newfield
High School through his remarkable determination. Dawnwood Middle School’s March student of the month recipient, Abigail Jones, is a remarkably smart and talented sixth grader. During her first two quarters of middle school, Abigail has maintained a stellar 98 GPA, with high honor distinction, and is an active member of Jazz Band and Art Club. Outside of school, Abigail finds time to participate in dance, Girl Scouts, volleyball and piano. Her favorite subject is science because of the hands-on experiments and interaction with her peers. Abigail’s confidence and leadership skills will be a great asset to the Dawnwood Middle School community for years to come. Logan Aybar is a sixth grade student at Selden Middle School. His academic excellence
during his first two quarters as a middle school student earned him High Honor Roll and sequentially, March student of the month. Although he enjoys all of his classes, his favorite class is math because he relishes the challenge of solving complex problems and getting the right answer. Logan is an active participant of the Science Club and also enjoys attending after-school fitness intramurals. In his free time, Logan plays in soccer and basketball leagues and volunteers to prepare and deliver meals to homeless shelters. He is recognized as an attentive, genuine student who is a pleasure to have in class. As of now, Logan does not know what he wants to do when he gets older but is instead focused on being his best self and exploring all of his interests.

County Honorees Two county employees were rewarded for going above and beyond in their duties as part of a new recognition program sponsored by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Vincent Cordiale, systems analyst supervisor with the county’s information technology department, and Jennifer Kohn, a senior assistant county attorney, were honored with the firstever Employee Excellence
Awards at the Legislature’s March 7th General Meeting in Riverhead. Awards will be given out each General Meeting to acknowledge county employees for their hard work and contribution. “Many county employees work tremendously hard and are valuable assets to their departments, and the Employee Excellence Awards are a way for us to recognize their dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.
“Conscientious, honest and hard-working, Vincent Cordiale and Jennifer Kohn have excelled in their departments, making them perfect candidates for this award. I thank them for their contribution and service to Suffolk on behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County.” Vincent Cordiale, of Rocky Point in Suffolk’s Sixth District, was nominated by IT Commissioner Scott Mastellon. Cordiale has worked with the county
for the last 20 years and is responsible for the county’s technology infrastructure. A lead designer of the county’s redundant data centers, his commitment and dedication helped the county continue to operate during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Super Snowstorm Nemo, and he helped save $150,000 in county funding by obtaining a licensing rule exception. He has a stellar reputation for being the first employee to respond to issues in the evenings,
during the weekends, and even on holidays Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. She has represented the county in various fields
such as farm preservation, planning issues and Cornell Cooperative management, and she ushered through the sale of the remediated Circutron property. She has been instrumental in drafting new code and helped coordinate the county’s response to the detection of firesuppressing chemicals at Gabreski and in Yaphank, and to dumping at West Hills County Park.

After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts.
Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Parents as Reading Partners As part of the Connetquot Central School District’s continued focus on creating lifelong readers, students at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently took part in this year’s Parents as Reading Partners program and read a total of 24,000 minutes at home over the course of four days. In celebration of
the student’s reading achievement, members of the teaching staff bravely took part in a fun-spirited “Principal’s Challenge” in front of the entire school. Dressed in ponchos and goggles, a dozen teachers and staff members bravely smiled as students were given the opportunity to “pie” them in the face with whipped cream. Even
Principal Stuart Pollak took part in the fun event, as he was “pied” by his staff members for being such a good sport throughout the event. Sycamore’s annual PARP program encourages students and parents to share a love for reading and spend quality time together at home.

After completing her third tour of duty in the Air Force Reserves, Longwood Class of 2009 alumna Kelsey Desz stopped by the high school to thank students for a special package she received during her most recent tour of duty in Afghanistan. As part of Longwood High School’s Hometown Cares program, students in the Late Afternoon Program (LAP) have been collecting and shipping out personal care items and snacks to alumni currently serving in the military. “I was so surprised and appreciative when
I received the package,” said Ms. Desz. “I couldn’t believe that the school remembered me.” To show her gratitude for the students’ kindness and generosity, Ms. Desz presented the students with a certificate and a flag that flew over Afghanistan in their honor. LAP Nurse Virginia Golden, RN, launched the program this past October when she learned of a graduate who had joined the Navy but had no family to support him. “It occurred to me that this young man would not receive any letters,
cards or packages,” said Mrs. Golden. “Here at Longwood, we pride ourselves on being a family. Troop Visits District Office Legislator Tom Muratore recently invited Boy Scout Troop #9 of Lake Ronkonkoma to visit his district office. The visit was part of the troop’s requirement to earn their Citizenship in the Community Badge. Legislator Muratore’s staff explained the history of the Suffolk County Legislature, the functions performed by a legislative
office, identified the area encompassing the Fourth District, and discussed current issues of relevance in Suffolk County. To add some Scout history to the meeting, Muratore’s personal Boy Scout uniform from 1959 was displayed to the troop. The meeting was concluded with a tour of the office, followed by a question and answer
period. “It was a pleasure hosting Troop #9 and helping these young men earn their badges. I have such fond memories from my own scouting days,” stated Muratore. “Encouraging young people to be engaged in local government is so important, because the future is in their hands.”
Beyond the Classroom Third and fourth grade students from Charles E. Walters, Coram, Ridge, and West Middle Island Elementary Schools have been working collaboratively, without ever leaving their classrooms, to create a gallery of interactive webbased research. Utilizing Google Apps for Education (GAFE), the students created slideshows combining multimedia with content area based reading. Each project was chosen by the students to reflect their
creativity and interests. Using Google Slides, students created digital research projects to share their knowledge. The students created teams and partnered with other students within the District. Working collaboratively, they reviewed each other’s work and provided feedback to their partners located in a different classroom in a different school. “It was fun because I got to meet the kids from Charles E. Walters,” said Coram fourth grade
student Justin Merkle. “I learned new things, and I’m excited about doing the program again.” As students met for the first time, they were able to share experiences and demonstrate their projects utilizing QR codes. Partners selected projects to review and record at least one new found piece of information. Presentations included animation, graphic layout and design, importing video and photographs.

RECYCLING CLUB - On March 16th, Councilman Michael Loguercio visited with the “Torch Club” at the Boys and Girls Club of Bellport to help them get started on their newly formed Recycling Club. The Councilman had a discussion with the students about how we should all reduce, reuse and recycle. The students told the Councilman that they were concerned for the environment and they want to keep the community clean. The Councilman also thanked the students for the wonderful poster they created for him.
PUZZLE ANSWERS: Students of Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by Holocaust survivor Werner Reich. He hosted a powerful presentation which shed light onto the tragedies he faced during the Holocaust, and the
importance of standing up for those who are oppressed. Throughout the course of his speech, Mr. Reich made reference to “the good people who did nothing” during the time of the Holocaust, and informed the students in attendance that it is

APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help
reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure”. More research is needed, she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can
include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their

Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.
“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress and getting a good night’s rest start with
evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements,
exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Legislator Monica Martinez and housing counseling organizations to unveil Suffolk County’s new Foreclosure Prevention Hotline: 631.853.HOME. “This foreclosure hotline will provide the comprehensive assistance needed by individuals and families who are facing foreclosure,” said County Executive Bellone. A 2014 HUD study found homeowners who receive housing counseling were nearly three times more likely to receive a loan modification, and 70% less likely to re-default on a modified loan. We wanted to devise a method where we could easily connect homeowners grappling with foreclosure to the services they need because we know it will help.” The foreclosure hotline was created, in partnership
with the Empire Justice Center and non-profit housing and legal counseling agencies, to offer a centralized number where Suffolk residents who are in need of foreclosure counseling and assistance will have the opportunity to be referred to resources that will assist with their particular issue. All services offered are free of charge. “Losing your house is a traumatic event, but this foreclosure hotline is a way we can help distressed homeowners prevent that circumstance from manifesting,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Keeping families stable and in their homes helps not only the residents of the home but also our communities at large. By providing free access to counseling professionals, this hotline will help vulnerable residents facing foreclosure navigate what can be an intimidating
process and take control of their situation.” “As representative of the 9th Legislative District, which has the highest rate of home foreclosures in the state, and Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shorebeing three of the highest foreclosure rates in the County; the Foreclosure Prevention Hotline will provide some much-needed assistance to local families. It will connect residents with FREE resources and services that will prevent foreclosure and mitigate the effects of foreclosure proceedings,” said Legislator Monica Martinez. In December, the County held a Foreclosure Prevention Open House to bring together homeowners in need of services and non-profit housing agencies and legal service providers who are dedicated to assisting homeowners. Even
though we are nearly a decade into the foreclosure crisis, there is still a startling number of people in need who are not aware of the many incredible and vitally important services available to them. The open house alone assisted more than a dozen homeowners in modifying their loans or giving them access to free legal services to help them through the foreclosure process. Suffolk County wanted to replicate the success of the open house and ensure that residents in need of assistance would have access to qualified housing counseling professionals on a daily basis. Hence, the Foreclosure Prevention Hotline was created. Suffolk County has a robust database of referral contacts and foreclosure prevention hotline operators will assess each circumstance and connect caller with appropriate organization that can
address their needs. Collaborating organizations and agencies who will assist residents include: • Community Development Corporation of Long Island • Debt Counseling Corporation • Long Island Housing Partnership • Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk • Long Island Fair Housing Services • La Fuerza Unida • Safeguard Credit • Central Islip Civic Council • American Debt Resources • Nassau/Suffolk Law Services • Touro Law Center • New York Legal Assistance Group “Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and his team are to be
commended for dedicating resources to foreclosure prevention including creating and staffing this Foreclosure Prevention Hotline In Suffolk County. The hotline will be helpful in connecting distressed homeowners with the free housing counseling and legal services currently provided through the Attorney General’s Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) throughout the County and we hope to be continued with state funding after HOPP ends in September.” “I cannot stress how vitally important it is for homeowners who have fallen onto hard times to connect with the trained professionals who can provide them the counseling and financial advice they need to get back on the right track,” said Bellone.
