eventh grade students at Middle Country Central School District’s Selden Middle School created handmade valentines for members of the local Rose Caracappa Senior Center as part of the Meals On Wheels program. Students aimed to establish a relationship between their school and their community. The 7th graders hoped to help share some love on Valentine’s Day and lift the feeling of loneliness among some of their local seniors.

Of Snow & Spring & Savoring It All By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has arrived. Sort of. As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began. I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme
fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you. Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s
the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

Years later, the Rotary Club became the sponsor, and continues the tradition today, along with the Fuoco family. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young
adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment, even offering an alumni week for campers who have aged out Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Student Spotlight MESOPOTAMIAN INNOVATION
SUBMITTED BY: CHRISTOPHER DAMONE, 9TH GRADE • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL The Mesopotamians have created many inventions that have influenced our lives today. Without the Mesopotamians, many of the things we use on a daily basis would not exist. One of the many inventions of the Mesopotamians was the creation of the wheel. The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.E. The Sumerians used the wheels so that they could construct wheeled carts. By doing so, they were able to create extremely efficient ways of transporting goods. Clearly, the wheel plays a significant role in our society today. Without the wheel, cars, trains and even airplanes could not function. The wheel helped the Sumerians tremendously thousands of years ago, and it continues to help us today. Another major invention of the Mesopotamians was the creation of iron metallurgy. By 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamians attempted
to create iron. When they first started, the iron was too weak to be used for anything beneficial. However, this all changed when one group of people fixed the problem. The Hittites, a group of people who lived in modernday Turkey, created extremely durable iron weapons and tools. The iron they used quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Not only was iron durable, but it was also inexpensive. It is evident that iron has a tremendous influence on our society today. Iron can be found in fences and buildings. Additionally, the Mesopotamians are responsible for shipbuilding. Shipbuilding enabled them to have long-distance trade. The group of people in Mesopotamia who were responsible for shipbuilding was the Phoenicians. One place they went to for trading was Harappa, which is located by the Indus River, Egypt, Lebanon and Persia, which was
located in modern-day Iran, Arabia and Anatolia, which is located in modern-day Turkey. In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today. One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.

At its meeting on February 25th at The BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue, the Patchogue Rotary Club presented Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck with a check in the amount of $125,000. The money was raised from the 45th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, which was held September 18, 2014 at the Bellport Country Club. The event’s honoree was Bridgehampton National Bank, which was a major sponsor of the event. Since its inception, the golf tournament has raised nearly $1.5 million for the camp. The camp

(FREE) announced that they have received a grant from the Office of Mental Health (OMH) for the development of a suicide prevention program aimed at supporting young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 who are at high risk for suicide. Through collaborations
with youth agency staff and youth groups, the suicide prevention program will reach high risk subpopulations, such as youth aging out of foster care, youth with disabilities, GLBT youth and youth living in high risk communities on Long Island. The project aims to create a safe and supportive environment where youth and young adults watch out for each other and get help if needed. The website, freespli. org, includes a toll free number to call, 1.800.273.TALK (8255), if you have had thoughts of suicide or are thinking about suicide. Help is available, free of charge, 24/7. The website also includes a Suicide Prevention Resource Center for youth, friends and families and a list of websites to get help for crisis situations. FREE will partner with several well-respected youth organizations to implement the suicide
prevention program. Partners include: Adelante, Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk County, Inc. (EOC), Family Life Center (Wyandanch Youth Center), and Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. (YES). In addition, FREE will work with the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Long Island and OMH to offer staff and youth trainings. The Vanguard Student Recognition Award recognizes outstanding students who are enrolled in career and technical education programs that prepare them for careers that are not traditional for

Celebrating Black History Students at Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School recently hosted their annual Black History Month celebration to promote acceptance and respect throughout their community. This year’s theme, “Our differences are what make us unique,” was created and planned by several students who
invited guest speakers and scheduled performances. The evening’s program featured Centereach High School’s Jazz Band, the high school Women’s Choir and poetry readings. Third and fourth grade students at Coram Elementary School are learning beyond the boundaries of their classroom walls through Longwood School District’s recent integration of Google Apps for Education (GAFE). Google Drive Collaborative: Bridging the Grade Divide provided 400 students, across 18 sections in two grade levels, with the opportunity to work together virtually. The project integrated multidisciplinary study, incorporating ELA, science and social studies with 21st century technological literacy and collaborative skills. Students were
engaged with enriching, content-based materials according to their abilities and interests. The partnership empowered students to use various aspects of Google Slides to share information and provide feedback on countries and cultures around the world, as well as the habitat and adaptation of animals native to their geographical location. As a culminating activity, the students met and utilized Quick Response codes (QR) to download their peer’s researched based presentations. “We had a chance to look up pictures and research lots of information,” said fourth grader Felicity
Contento. “We made QR codes which are really interesting because when you scan them, they show you everyone’s project. I learned so much about the countries in Africa and the animals that live there. Ian Kotler just might be following in the footsteps of Suffolk County Community College graduate and now retired Astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson (class of ’66). Kotler, 28, of Lake Grove, an Earth & Space Sciences major with an Astronomy emphasis at the college’s Ammerman Campus in Selden has been invited by NASA to visit the Johnson Space Center in Houston this May after completing a series of exams and delivering a proposal for a Mars Rover. Kotler applied for and was accepted for the
online component of the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) project. The budding astrophysicist took a series of exams, in which Ian achieved a perfect score, and delivered to NASA a proposal that included a design for a Mars Rover. Kotler’s design included operational specifications, mission objectives, project time lines and public outreach initiatives. Kotler called his rover project Interplanetary Dual Excavating Pair of Traversable Hydrocarbon Seismometers (iDepths) that he designed to run on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator powered by plutonium 238. “Ian entered Suffolk County Community College not really knowing what he wanted to do in his life, but whilst here discovered his passion for science, and astronomy in particular. Through hard work and with the guidance of the faculty,

he is now beginning what I am sure will be an amazing, lifelong journey in astronomy. It just goes to show what students can achieve at Suffolk if they put their mind to it,” said Dr. Mike Inglis, Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics. Kotler’s project was a huge success and NASA commended him for “…the dedication you put forth in the NCAS online session as well as the quality of your assignment submissions.” Kotler has now been invited for an all-expenses paid week-long visit to the Johnson Space Center where he will work alongside NASA scientists and engineers. Kotler, a 2005 graduate of Smithtown High School, says he expects to graduate from Suffolk County Community College in May of 2016, and plans to study Astrophysics at the University of Hawaii at Hilo after earning a bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stopped by the Knights of Columbus in Ronkonkoma on Thursday, March 12th, to visit with volunteers for the Long Island Chapter of The Giving Doll and to pick up fifty dolls made for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Domestic Violence Unit. The dolls will be given out by Deputy Sheriffs at the Central Islip Courthouse to children whose parents or guardians are seeking Orders of Protection in Family Court. “Unfortunately, we see many young children come through our Domestic
Violence Unit and it’s often an emotionally traumatic day. I’m very grateful for the donation and I know the dolls will help lift the spirits of the children and the parents during an otherwise very stressful time,” said Sheriff DeMarco. The local chapter of the organization was founded by Maureen Ennis of Lake Ronkonkoma in the fall of 2011, and has since crafted and donated almost 5000 handmade dolls. On the day of the Sheriff’s visit, nearly 80 volunteers worked in teams sewing, stuffing and dressing the dolls, which would be packed and
delivered to charities and hospitals throughout Long Island and the world. “We appreciate the work of all our volunteers who helped to make this donation possible to the Sheriff’s Domestic Violence Unit. We look forward to working with Sheriff DeMarco for years to come to provide The Giving Dolls to victims of crimes and domestic violence,” said Maureen Ennis. First Robotics Set School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), in conjunction with FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), is pleased to present the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) on March 27th and 28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. on both days, with opening ceremonies. Families and supporters from all across Long Island are invited to watch fiftyone teams of students and engineering and technical mentors from Long Island, the New York metropolitan area, as well as Brazil, Israel, and Canada, demonstrate their skills for science, mathematics,
and technology. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. Now in its 26th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates close to 2,548 teams from every state in the U.S. and 16 countries worldwide to compete in 58 Regional Events and 17 District Competitions. More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to be eligible to earn a spot at the Championship, to be held April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. This year’s challenge,
RECYCLE RUSHSM, is a recycling-themed competition played by two alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. At the event, families can watch the robots compete, as well as check out the demonstrations from some of the Junior FIRST® LEGO League, FIRST® LEGO League and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, visit the FESTO traveling exhibit about engineering and try out the da Vinci®
Surgical System robot. “We are extremely excited to bring back the FIRST Robotics Competition this year,” said Debra Winter, FRC Co-Director, SBPLI. “This event is an important stepping stone for those students. For some, it’s a chance to take part in making a vision become a reality. For others, it opens the door to possibilities that are few and far between these days, like scholarships or job opportunities. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 11th, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity that the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce the whole family to the sport with no license needed to participate. At this festival, you can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try your hand at fishing for trout, and the
kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m. and are provided free of charge. Activities will include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations and fish cleaning services. Additionally, a display area will be set up by state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and local fishing clubs. Participants are urged to try their hands at fly casting, as demonstrations will be on-going. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and will include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit.
Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes, which will be supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program, OPRHP, the Fisherman Magazine and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing and increasing hunting opportunities in New York State. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails and parking areas. Under the initiative, the 2015-2016 Executive Budget proposes to
establish an additional $8 million for state land access projects and an additional $4 million for the state’s hatcheries in NY Works funding. The Budget also proposes to create a new capital account which along with federal PittmanRobertson funds will be used to manage, protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat, and to improve and develop public access for fish and wildlife-related recreation. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event. The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties conducted in March and April. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 4,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC and OPRHP. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh,
Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, as well as 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Honor Band Concert A Success The 34th Annual Catholic School Honor Band performance was held Saturday, March 7th at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington. The Honor Band, which is made up of outstanding musicians from Catholic schools all across Nassau and Suffolk counties performed for audiences of nearly 3,000 people, including family, friends, school principals, and administrators. The Honor Band is split into two units, the Red Band and the Blue Band in order to accommodate the number of qualifying students and to be able to seat all of the proud parents and relatives in the auditorium. Each is made up of 3 performing groups; Junior Honor Band – members are mostly in their 2nd and 3rd years of playing, Senior Honor Band – members mostly in their 4th, 5th and 6th years of playing and the Wind Ensemble – members mostly in their 5th and 6th years of playing who are also part of the Senior Honor Band. The Wind Ensemble group performs music that is the most complex of all three groups. Music genres performed by all groups range from original band compositions, classical transcriptions, marches, patriotic, movies and pop arrangements.
The Honor Band, which first performed together as a group of 100 musicians in 1982 has grown to represent over 700 musicians from dozens of schools today. Many graduates, who participated in the honor band when they
attended the elementary schools, are invited and accept to participate in the festival as alumni. The band is led today by Mr. Allan Fisher, an accomplished educator and Educational Manager with Paul Effman Music. Mr. Fisher accepted the baton from Paul Effman in 2007. Mr.
Effman still devotes his life to Music Education as well as musical performance. He oversees Paul Effman Music Service and performs with members of his talented staff at each Honor Band Festival. “There is a wealth of expression in every child,” stated Effman. “It is our duty to seek out and nurture the music and art in each and every student we educate.” Participants in the concert included 42 of the 43 Catholic Elementary Schools operated by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Music education, academic excellence and faith formation are all important when your goal is to ‘educate the whole child mind, body and spirit’ as is the goal of Long Island’s Catholic elementary schools. Featuring highly developed music and performing arts programs, the schools offer experienced teachers, creative classrooms, computer instruction and innovative reading programs to accelerate achievement. In addition to the band programs, the schools, working with Paul Effman Music, has recently added orchestral study and string programs giving students the additional opportunity to learn violin, viola and cello, and guitar.

Bob Pape. “The safety demonstrations event will bring New York’s premier School Bus safety experts together to share their knowledge and skills, along with our industries best practices, with parents and school officials from across the region.” There will be two sessions containing the same program, one from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and another from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Each demonstration session will start with an introduction on how school bus drivers are screened and selected,
along with driver training and qualification requirements. Participants will then get to experience the actual school bus driver training by going through five separate school bus safety stations, each focusing on a different aspect of safe pupil transportation. The safety aspects covered will include school bus stop arms, on-board video cameras and student management on and off the bus, child check safety procedures and motion detectors, school bus evacuation procedures and a drivers physical performance
test. There will also be information discussions regarding school bus safety legislation and advocacy. “At the end of the session all participants will have a greater understanding of what it takes to keep our children safe on or near a school bus, and the things we can all do to improve student and school bus safety,” said Pape. “School Bus Safety Demonstration Day will also help us to continue to do what we do best provide among the safest pupil transportation services in the country.”

“Open Your Heart” is a campaign designed to target young adults and provide awareness for healthy hearts via the use of online fundraising, social media trends, and viral cross promotion. J.W. Cudd, a Pop/Country Artist, created the song, “Open Your Heart” in hopes of it providing significant funding for the American Heart Association’s legacy of public education and research. This song will be released in online music stores across the nation; J.W. CUDD will donate 100% of net proceeds to the American Heart
Association, but in no event less than a total donation of 25% per sales price of “Open Your Heart” song from February 5th, 2015 to December 31st, 2015. The goal is to generate an online wave of fundraising - via the use of entertainment - that can be easily accessed with the click of a button. However, how do you get masses of people across the nation interested in helping out the American Heart Association? Make a music video with people they do recognize. By creating a small video for
the project, with wellknown faces, Open Your Heart will appeal to a larger platform. This will help ensure the fundraiser reaches its full potential. As of February 2014, Cudd and his crew gathered photo submissions from celebrities, fans, and individuals to complete the video. Fifty- sixty actors ranging over today’s hottest shows and movies donated their time to ensure the campaign’s success. “ . . . for the future, for the world, for all humankind...Open Your Heart.”
