School Survey to Launch The Longwood Central School District remains committed to hearing from our school community as we strive to ensure ideal learning environments for our students. With that in mind, the District is launching a School Climate Survey that seeks parent and staff feedback on District goals, educational opportunities, instructional culture and more. The District has partnered with School Perceptions, an independent educational research firm, to conduct the survey and ensure that all responses are

kept confidential. The survey will be sent by email and will be available on Thursday, March 23rd through Friday, April 7th, 2017. The survey will be offered in both English and Spanish. The goal of the survey is to measure the environment and approval of the school system in areas, including academic expectations, school safety, school leadership, student involvement, respectful climate, caring adults, parent and community involvement, and student learning. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R.

Lonergan urges staff and parents to participate. “Every voice matters,” Dr. Lonergan said. “Together, we can ensure our District continues to make our community proud. District Clerk Appointed The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce that Lillian Pizzolo has been appointed to the position of District Clerk, replacing Judith Rice who recently retired. Mrs. Pizzolo is a familiar face around Longwood, having worked as a senior stenographer for the principal’s office at Longwood Junior High School since 2008. Prior to her position at the junior high school, Mrs. Pizzolo worked as a clerk-typist for

Coram Elementary School. For more than 12 years, Mrs. Pizzolo served as Longwood Council PTA President and has held numerous PTA/PTSA Unit Officer positions. Additionally, Mrs. Pizzolo was the coordinator and organizer of Longwood Day, the Board of Education’s Meet the Candidates Night, and various PTA events. Mrs. Pizzolo also served on the District’s Policy and Safety Committees, the Shared Decision Making

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reﬂection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

On March 7th, Councilman Michael Logeurcio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau held the first Free College Seminar Program at Brookhaven Town Hall. This event was so successful that there will be a second program planned for later this year. Approximately 100 residents participated as representatives from Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) discussed the college application process, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and the various programs

and services the college offers to students. Councilman Michael Loguercio, who serves as the Town Board liaison to the Youth Bureau said, “It was great to see so many people participating in our first College Seminar Program. This is a time when families need to make some very important academic and financial decisions, and we can help them navigate through the system. This one was such a success and I look forward to our next event.” Most of the information discussed could be applied

to the overall college application and financial aid process. Parents and students actively engaged in the seminar by asking questions and taking notes. Several participants stayed after the end of the presentation to ask the SCCC representative questions and obtain material that will help them start the college application process. Students in the Retail Store Services Program, Canine Careers Program, and Health Related Occupations Program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center recently participated in a New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Healthy (NYCOSH) training. Founded in 1979, NYCOSH has worked to defend every person’s right to a safe and healthy workplace. They offer training, education, and advocacy. NYCOSH representative Susan McQuade told the students about their rights. They have the right to a fair and full day’s pay

for a full day’s work, the right to overtime pay, the right to be safe, the right from harassment and discrimination, and they have the right to organize (meaning they have the right to get together with co-workers to improve working conditions). Most young people work in the retail industry and half are injured or killed on the job. Many are not given protective equipment, they do not receive education and training, and they are asked to do work that is against the law for their age. A person under the age of 18 cannot drive a four wheel vehicle; slice meat with a machine,

manufacture brick or tile, work on a roof, or do demolition work. There are many more jobs that are dangerous and against the law for workers younger than 18 years old to do. Retail Store Services Teacher Ginny Rios said, “Our students are learning skills to work in areas like food service, health care, retail, and maintenance. It’s important they are educated about their rights and how they protect themselves. We invite a representative from NYCOSH to speak to our students each school year.”

Gala Award Show Connetquot Central School District administrators, staff, family and friends recently gathered at Villa Lombardi’s of Holbrook to celebrate the 2017 Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children Gala and Fashion Show, highlighting not only the foundation’s contributions to the district, but individuals’ efforts as well. A record-breaking 400 guests attended the gala to recognize this year’s honorees and continue to support the work of the CFAC. “This year’s theme was ‘Then and Now,’ which recalled the history of the Connetquot

Central School District, and recognized the dedication of educators and community residents who have helped the district prosper,” said Tara West, president of the CFAC board of directors. Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III, whose father William J. Lindsay II was a founding member of CFAC, was on hand to present the awards to retiring Connetquot educators Linda Tabatchnik and Dr. Gail Cholden, who have dedicated more than 65 combined years to the children of the district. In addition, Community Star Awards were presented for the first

time to residents who have dedicated their time and energy in support of the district children. This year’s recipients included Mark Brodsky, Vera Truhlar, Ray Carta, Dawn Berntsen and John Berntsen, and Dr. John Gil. Since 2005, CFAC has helped students in need by providing free tutoring, supporting community events, and providing more than $150,000 in school, community and teacher financial grants. The grants help fund necessary equipment and supplies, support special student assemblies and finance training that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot community.

The LIHC’s online Are You Ready, Feet?™portal allows users to track their physical activity by minutes moved, miles traveled, or steps walked. For each activity logged, users receive an entry into a

random drawing for health and wellness prizes, like the one Brooks walked away with. With 143 activity logs and a total of 1,681.01 miles moved, Brooks regularly logged the steps recorded by his fitness tracker. “My FitBit died on me a little while ago,” says Brooks. “I was going to buy myself a new one, so the timing is perfect.” A pair of Brooks’ earbud headphones recently stopped working as well, and he was delighted to discover the three new pairs in his prize basket.
