United Nations Conference Student-representatives of Connetquot High School’s Model United Nations Club recently participated in the National High School Model United Nation’s International Conference held in Manhattan, joining more than 1,400 students from across the globe in the prestigious event. The multi-day field trip consisted of debates, discussions and culminated with an awards ceremony held at UN headquarters.
Out of the 1,400 attending students, only 12 were asked to speak at the General Assembly Hall to represent their ideas and solutions, including Connetquot High School students Brendan Falabella and Tyler Zere. According to Model UN Club adviser Jennifer Bay, both students did a fabulous job speaking in front of not only all of the delegates, but diplomats, ambassadors, advisers and conference staff as well. Brendan was

I Miss You Friend I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.” I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion. She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a
couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna. She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across
was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years. Brenna had lived to the age of 32. I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family. Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.” I miss you friend.
Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration! Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19. There a many ways the public can get involved with Birthday Wishes of Long Island! One way is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington, located at 414 New York Ave. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and food tastings. Additionally, Birthday Wishes is looking for people to volunteer their time as drivers or party coordinators. Lastly, being that they rely heavily on donations of toys from
generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations.
As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Therefore, please make sure your donations are brand new only! Below is a list of gift items that they are seeking: For Boys: Basketballs, Axe Gift Sets, String Bags, Ear Buds, Water Bottles, Adult Size Socks, Large or X-Large Hoodies. For Girls: Nail Polish, Manicure Sets, MakeUp, Make-Up Bags, Perfume, Adult Coloring Books With Markers, Body Wash and Lotion. All donations can be dropped off at their Hicksville office, located at 15 Cantiague Rock Road. Please call ahead to make sure a staff member is on site to assist you: (516) 390-3505. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: The Mercy Inn ~ Wyandanch The Mercy Inn is a wonderful soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one every leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. If you would like to volunteer with or donate to The Mercy Inn, please feel free to call them at (631) 643-5117 for more information. Thai Noodle Salad with Peanut Sauce By Carolyn S. of Hicksville
A chef by profession, Carolyn S. of Hicksville is always playing in her kitchen, figuring out how to whip up healthier versions of some of her exotic, Asian-fusion favorites.
2 large carrots, spiral sliced 1 red bell pepper, spiral sliced 1/4 cup green onions, diced chopped peanuts as a garnish Canola vegetable oil on-hand

Preparation Add garlic, ginger, peanut butter, lime juice and zest, soy sauce and red pepper flakes to a small bowl and mix together. To a large frying pan, add your canola oil on high heat. Add zucchini, carrots and bell peppers to the pan, and cook until just wilted, 3-4 minutes, stirring occassionally.

Michael Buble Leans in with Love and Laughter By Allison Kugel The year 2019 marks a boon of professional and personal successes for multi-Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, Michael Buble. His family’s much publicized heartbreak as they fought for their son Noah, as he battled pediatric liver cancer, set Buble on a new course of humility which was evident throughout our conversation. Now, with Noah’s health much improved, Michael Buble has re-emerged with a new album, aptly titled Love (or simply, the heart emoji) on which he collaborated with mega-music producer, David Foster; a sold-out worldwide tour and his seventh upcoming musical television special, set to air on NBC on March 20th. My interview with Michael Buble is one of his most authentic and reflective, to date. We cover the subjects of parenthood, success, spirituality, love, humor, and of course, the music.
Michael Buble: That’s great. He’s your boyfriend. It sounds so strange to say that, and whenever I say that people are like, “That sounds weird,” but it’s not. Obviously, not in that way, but it is romantic. He’s going to love you forever. You’ll be the love of his life and he’s the love of your life. Allison Kugel: I’m banking on it. Michael Buble: I love my boys and
Allison Kugel: I’ll tell you what I have always found fascinating about you, and I’m a fan of music from earlier times. I’m forever listening to music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. What’s so interesting about you is that you came along in the very early 2000s when everything was hip hop, and rap/ rock. What made you believe that you could even break through as somebody who was crooning these songs from a bygone era? Michael Buble: It was probably stupidity (laughs). I mean, thinking that I might have success was probably naiveté. But honest to God, I think I was blinded by the love of the music. And by the way, I love all kinds of music. I love rock, R & B and rap. For me, if it’s good, it’s good. It doesn’t matter who did it or where it came from. I hoped that I could trust my instincts. Allison Kugel: I’ve been listening to this author and speaker named Dr. Joe Dispenza. He studies the patterns of the human brain and how we create our own reality. He essentially talks about how anybody who has ever achieved something great, has been able to believe in a vision and believe in a life for themselves that they couldn’t yet perceive with their physical senses. When I read that you, from the age of two, knew you were going to be a singer, slept with your bible at night and prayed for it, and you held strong to that vision for all of those years before it actually materialized in your life, I put you in that great category. Does that make sense? Michael Buble: Yeah, it does. There is a Canadian writer [Malcolm Gladwell], he wrote a book called The Outliers. His premise was that to truly become great at something, you need to put in ten thousand hours of work. And if you find anyone who’s become truly great at what they do, they have put in that amount of time. There are little parts of what you were talking about that mix with the practical application of doing things enough and focusing enough. You learn by osmosis and your experience helps you to grow. Then by the time you get your opportunity, you’re ready. I think that probably had a lot to do with it for me. Number one, I loved it. I had a passion for the music and the songs. But I did the work; I practiced, I sang, and I studied. I took it all in and digested it as much as possible. I
get what you’re saying. You’re talking about visualizing. I have a friend who tells me often that he used to walk down the street and say to himself, “I have a million dollars.” Not, “I want a million dollars,” but, “I have a million dollars; I am successful.” Allison Kugel: Knowing everything you now know about the music industry, about the odds, about everything you’re aware of; if you had to start from square one, would you have the courage to do it all over again? Michael Buble: No. Allison Kugel: You don’t think so? Michael Buble: I don’t think so. Allison Kugel: Wow. Well thank God that’s not an option! Michael Buble: It’s a hard question, because reality doesn’t come into it. I came home yesterday with my wife and we had to take our son to his checkup, the scans and everything (Buble is talking about his son Noah, who is currently in remission from pediatric liver cancer). We take him every three months for checkups, and it’s really scary. My wife and I actually talked about this and we said, “My God, look at what we did.” She was twenty-three and I was thirty-two. We met in Argentina and fell in love. Everyone told us it was impossible. They told us not to do it, because of the whole long-distance relationship thing. And we did it. We got married. Everyone said, “That’s crazy. That’s not going to work. And whatever you do, don’t have kids, because that’ll be murder.” And then we had kids. And then there’s what happened to our family (referencing son Noah’s cancer diagnosis). One of the first things a doctor told me at one of the hospitals we’d gone to, was to stay strong and help each other through this. A friend of ours, when we had asked why the doctors keep telling us that, this friend who works with families going through things like this, said, that something like 92% of couples who go through this… Allison Kugel: Get divorced… Michael Buble: Get divorced. And many of the 8% who don’t, have [more] children. And of course, my wife and I thought here we are with our beautiful daughter. We were in the car yesterday and I looked at her and said, “Would you do it all over again?” She then answered, “Of course I would do it all over again. I wouldn’t want anything different. You guys are the greatest joy of my life.” But then my question to her was, “But would you be brave enough to do it all over again?” And then she said, “I
don’t know.” And I would have to say the same thing. I don’t know. Allison Kugel: Any of us could say that. It’s like when you bring your newborn baby home from the hospital, and the thought that goes through your mind is that you are going to give this kid a perfect existence, and you’re going to shelter him or her from any pain or discomfort. And then life happens, and don’t have the power to completely shield them from the pain and discomfort of life. Michael Buble: And you don’t have the power to shield them from yourself. For sure, I thought to myself, “He’s going to be better than I am!” I am so flawed. I’m so flawed and so impatient, and there are so many things about me that I don’t like or that I wish I could improve on. And then you go, “Oh my God, he’s acting exactly like me.” Allison Kugel: When you took that hiatus to deal with your son’s health, did you think that could be it for your music career? Michael Buble: Yeah. Allison Kugel: What was the impetus for you to come back? Michael Buble: He was better. We didn’t know how it was going to turn out. My heart was broken, I don’t know. It wasn’t that I ever fell out of love with music. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to go out there and be joyful. It just wasn’t something I could turn on. Allison Kugel: And you returned with an album dedicated to love. The album’s title is a heart emoji, and features some of the most beautiful love songs. Is that because you were so filled with love and gratitude for your son’s healing? Michael Buble: It’s because I was in a bubble, looking out at the world,
and I saw a lot of negative things happening around the world. I realized that I had an opportunity to put beautiful things out there. Allison Kugel: What do you think you are here in this life as Michael Buble to learn and to teach? Michael Buble: Listen, I don’t know yet. I’m still learning a lot. What scares me is I’ve learned so much more in the past five years than I had in all my previous years, combined. The reason I am reticent to give you an answer is because I can’t imagine what I will learn in another five. I have my faith and I try never to put it in people’s faces, because there’s a lot of people who don’t believe the same things I do, and that’s okay. I can keep it simple and say I don’t know what there is or what there isn’t, but I feel in some way we are all connected. I know that each one of us gets to play a part in bringing goodness and humanity into the world. I feel like, sometimes, because of the job I have, it can be magnified. If I can do that as best as I can, that can be my legacy. You probably hear stories like this all the time, but when my son was a newborn, I had a routine with him every night, where before I put him down in his crib, I would pick him up in my arms and slow dance with him to your music. When I hear Home or Quando Quando Quando, I just lose it, because I think back to that beautiful time.
I’m close with my boys, but it’s not the same as with my daughter. Everyone told me it would be different, and I was like, “No, no it won’t be.” And it’s different. She looks at me with those big blue eyes and I’m toast.

NEWFIELD GOES TO BROADWAY - Members of Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School wind ensemble recently attended the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. The student-musicians went to see the world-renowned show the day after their successful pops concert.

Breakout EDU A collaborative effort among students was key to cracking the code during a recent Valentine’s Day-themed Breakout EDU activity in Allison Poffenbarger’s third-grade class at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School
District. As part of the challenging activity, students were tasked with solving multiple puzzles to get clues that would provide the combinations for a series of locks. The students’ goal was to open the box that held Cupid’s
bow and arrows after he locked them in the box last year and forgot the combination. Working together, the student groups successfully solved each puzzle and unlocked the box.

American History and Literature As a means of connecting literature, historical events and music, students from Ronkonkoma Middle School were treated to a highly engaging inschool assembly, which culminated with a musical performance courtesy of a number of Ronkonkoma Middle School staff members and studentmusicians. Students first spent time in the classroom studying John Steinbeck’s literary masterpiece, “The Grapes of Wrath,” zeroing in on the book’s protagonist Tom Joad. Applying their knowledge of the novel, the students discussed why his family was forced to migrate West on Route 66 toward hopes of a new life
in California. Curated by both history teacher Kenneth Lehman and interim Principal Joseph Licato, the students gathered in the school’s auditorium for a presentation which demonstrated how technology is rapidly changing, and the job market is being affected due to this shift. They circled back to their classroom lessons which focused on how Americans living in the 1930s were forced out of work due to mechanized mass production. The students were able to make the modern connection to how companies such as Uber are putting taxi drivers out of work due to the application’s
ease of accessibility and comparatively low rates. As an additional connection to the afternoon’s central theme, a number of staff members and student-musicians joined forces to bring Bruce Springsteen’s hit song “The Ghost of Tom Joad” to life. The supergroup consisted of staff members Mr. Licato (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), Dr. Frank Saladino (lead guitar), Mike Murphy (bass), Stacy Stollberger (trumpet, percussion), Elizabeth Pieket (saxophone), Nicole White (piano), Adam Reinkraut (classical guitar), along with student-musicians Katlyn Smith (violin) and Joe Saracino (drums).

A celebration of African-American art, music and poetry recently took place at Sachem High School East as part of a Harlem Renaissance Living History Museum in honor of Black History Month. Led by members of the History Honor Society
and club adviser Tracey Melandro, students created a vibrant display of AfricanAmerican culture that highlighted achievements in art, music, literature and sports. Throughout this month, students researched a specific area of African-American culture and developed
engaging ways to present the information to their peers. Some of the unique ways students presented the information was by creating a “poet tree” where students added pieces of poetry, a station where students could recreate art from the Harlem Renaissance and

Strengthening Love of Literacy In recognition of Parents as Reading Partners Month, students of all grade levels at John Pearl Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were treated to a schoolwide assembly led by musician/ historian Patricia Shih for her “Big Ideas About Literacy” presentation. With assistance from her husband and musical accompaniment Mr. Steve, Mrs. Shih
introduced the students to a number of catchy and informative songs which celebrated literacy and the importance of books. During one of her songs, Mrs. Shih asked a number of student volunteers to present popular children’s books such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Cinderella” and “Winnie The Pooh” when they were called upon. Mrs. Shih also touched upon foreign and world languages during the
assembly as well, as she asked student volunteers to speak a phrase in a foreign language, which was then incorporated into a fun song for all to enjoy.
