The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved legislation to make discounted golf fees for veterans and active military personnel permanent. This resolution, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), expands the pilot program which was set to expire on March 11th, 2014. In 2012, Legislator S c h n e i d e r m a n introduced legislation which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of the military serve to

protect the freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The pilot program was a great success and many of our veterans took advantage of the reduced fees. I am in favor of anything we can do to support the veterans who protect our freedom every day.” Suffolk County Parks contains four golf courses which include Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead, Bergen Point Golf Course in Babylon, Timber Point Golf Course

in Great River and the West Sayville Golf Course. Each golf course is open from mid-March through December and is staffed by a PGA professional, a driving range, a practice green and a full service restaurant and catering facility. This legislation now moves to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his signature. Suffolk County Veterans can contact the Parks Department at 631.854.4949 or go to Suffolk County Park locations where green keys are sold with proper proof of residency; veterans must submit DD Form 214 (Certificate of release or Discharge from Active Duty) or Suffolk County Veteran Resident ID card issued by Suffolk County Veterans Agency.

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college (maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. “We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Award Of Excellence The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that it has received an award of excellence for its 2013 book, Murder On Long Island: A Nineteenth Century Tale Of Tragedy & Revenge. The award was made by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, located in Elmsford, NY. The Greater Hudson Heritage Network serves member cultural organizations, their staffs, their boards and their communities in the greater Hudson Valley - Metropolitan region, offering consultations and assistance, a resource network and professional development opportunities to advance the work

of historians, historic house museums, heritage centers, historic sites, archives and libraries in this National Heritage Area. The Network’s Awards for Excellence program seeks to recognize and commend exceptional efforts among GHHN members. Awards are made to projects that exemplify creativity and professional vision resulting in a contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the historic scene, material culture and diversity of the region. The book ‘Murder on Long Island’ documents the infamous murders of Mr. and Mrs. James Wickham of Cutchogue, Long Island.

In 1854, James Wickham got into an argument with one of his workers, Nicholas Behan, after Behan harassed another employee who refused to marry him. Several days after Behan’s dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to a nearby swamp. Behan was captured, tried, convicted and, on December 15th, 1854 became one of the last people to be hanged in Suffolk County. Volunteer Recovery Program The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for non-profits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers

at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. It will allow more groups to assist homeowners in their recovery.” Last spring, the Health & Welfare Council received a $1 million grant from the Red Cross to distribute through the Long Island Unmet Needs Roundtable. The Roundtable, which brings together a diverse group of philanthropic donors, offers financial assistance to help meet unmet needs for people affected by Sandy. LI Builders Expo This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. Lazazzaro, author of My Love, which chronicles her husband’s struggle against Alzheimer’s Disease. Additionally, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented “The New LongTerm Care Landscape - Benefiting from the Changes.” During lunch, guests listened to the keynote address, sponsored by Royal Health Care Services, and given by CBS Correspondent Barry Petersen. Mr. Petersen explained his struggles as a caregiver for his wife Jan, who suffered from Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Not only did he express his emotions, but he offered helpful tips and insights

pertaining to his personal caregiving. After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session showing/screening of the film The Genius of Marian. The movie presented the filmmaker’s mother, Pam White, through her early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. Celebrating 25 Years Keep Islip Clean begins its 25th Anniversary celebration with the springtime litter cleanups, beautification projects, recycling initiatives, fairs, festivals and educational activities that are collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, which is the largest community enhancement event in the nation that takes place annually in April and May. Two Earth Day events in Brentwood and Islip were the extent of involvement in the Great American Cleanup when KIC was founded in 1989 as an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful.

Twenty five years later, those two inaugural Earth Day events continue and there are now hundreds of additional projects with several thousand participants. KIC has activities for every interest, from large, organized events to individual litter cleanups. Whether a volunteer participates in a community-wide litter cleanup or forms their own group to plant a few flowers in a neighborhood spot, the Great American Cleanup makes a significant impact throughout Islip Township. KIC provides litter cleanup supplies, guidance and support services to all

volunteers. In addition to hands on projects, KIC uses educational materials to foster volunteerism in young people and teach them the importance of a clean, green community. Before bringing a cat home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. • Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open.

A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. To celebrate Women’s History Month, and in remembrance of the Holocaust, the author of Four Perfect Pebbles, spoke to students and faculty at Eastern Suffolk BOCES’ Centereach Academic Center (CAC). Author Marion Blumenthal Lazan shared her story of courage, hope, and the will to survive. She said, “The message I want to leave you with today is to always be respectful and tolerant of everyone that you interact with.” Paskel, a student from Longwood CSD said, “I was very moved by Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan’s story. I learned a lot about the

Holocaust and thought the song about the four little pebbles was beautiful.” Student Marquis, from Bay Shore UFSD, asked Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan where her “place of sanctuary was” to cope with all she had been through as a child. Lazan responded, “My home is a place of peace for me.” Marquis shared, “The presentation gave me a new perspective about the Holocaust.” Marion Blumenthal Lazan spent more than six years in Nazi concentration camps. A child of the Holocaust, Marion travels and lectures about those unforgettable years of horror and hardship. Her

mission is to educate the public but she especially likes to lecture to students. She stresses the important of optimism and is quoted as saying “I’m determined not to be bitter. I’m determined to be cheerful and positive as much as possible. None of us is spared hardships. It’s how we deal with situations that makes the difference.” After the presentation, Marion and her husband Nathanial answered questions, signed books, and had refreshments prepared by the CAC students in the CAC culinary room.

Kindness Assembly Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently held an assembly to emphasize the importance of kindness. The students gave presentations about what the word “kindness” means to them, and gave examples

of times they witnessed or experienced kind acts. Students learned how acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on children and adults, and how it is a useful method to help stop bullying in schools. A group of students were also awarded Certificates

On March 8th, Supervisor Ed Romaine paid a visit to show his support of the Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Team 263. The team is comprised of students and alumni from both the East and North campuses of Sachem High School. Each year, the Robotics Team builds a new 120-pound robot to

compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics competitions against other teams. Competitions take place regionally on Long Island, New York City, Connecticut and nationally in Atlanta and St. Louis. Students work together and with teachers and engineers from several

companies across the area to build the robot from scratch. The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition is scheduled for March 27th through 29th at Hofstra University. The members of the Sachem Aftershock will be honored at the March 25th Brookhaven Town Board meeting.
