Hooray For The 100th Day! On Feb. 25, kindergarten students throughout the Connetquot Central School District celebrated the 100th day of the school year with 100% enthusiasm. Spirited kindergartners at all seven district elementary schools created projects and participated in activities in various subject areas
related to the number 100. Besides being an exciting milestone, Connetquot teachers credit the 100th day theme with sharpening students’ math and observation skills. At Idle Hour and Cherokee Street Elementary Schools, kindergartners spent the day dressed up as 100-year-

olds, sporting everything from gray hair, to curlers, to drawn-on wrinkles, while those at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School paraded through the hallways in a “fashion show,” displaying the creative costumes and posters they had made for the occasion while cheered on by students and staff.

Additionally, students read Scholastic news articles on historical African American icons such as Mary McLeod Bethune, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson and Harriet Tubman. At the secondary level, students reflected on the civil rights movement and the nonviolent acts of Martin Luther King Jr. through civil disobedience. Students also watched the movie “Remember the Titans,” which tells the true story of the mandated integration of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, during the civil rights era of the
1960s. Students needed to identify examples of discrimination before explaining how the community and individuals overcame them. As part of a study on the Roaring ’20s, students looked at the Harlem Renaissance and how African Americans contributed to the culture of the United States through the rebirth of African American music, literature, poetry, art and dance, showcasing key members of the movement including Louis Armstrong, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Bessie Smith.

Sachem Schools Celebrate Black History Month Throughout February, in celebration of Black History Month, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a collection of lessons on prominent African American art, music, poetry, and men and women in history. In elementary schools around the district, students learned about Ruby Bridges, an elementary school student who at 6 years old was one of the first African Americans to desegregate a public school. Students learned about Bridges and then discussed the similarities they shared with each other.

Augmented Reality Turns Sandbox Into Geoscience Lesson A 200-pound sandbox has been incorporated into the Longwood Junior High School science curriculum, but this is no ordinary sandbox. As students push sand into mountain peaks, colors swirl, forming green and orange islands in a sea of blue. After placing their palms over the cliffs, virtual rain pours down, plunging into the blue. The AR Sandbox combines a real sandbox with a 3-D camera, a digital projector, and a powerful computer that allows students to manipulate and shape the sand and project a topographical overlay based on what they create.  “The AR Sandbox provides students with the opportunity to experience topography and land
formations as they’ve never experienced before by touching and creating the landforms themselves,� said science department chairperson Steven Sanders. “This technology allows students to bring to life what they’re learning in the classroom and enhance their understanding of topography. It also allows students to create their landscapes and see how they would appear on a topographic map in realtime.� As one of the only districts on Long Island to integrate this type of university-level technology, students are using 3-D visualization to create topography models by shaping real sand, which is then augmented in real-time by an elevation color map, topographic contour lines,
and simulated water. The system teaches students about topography, geologic concepts, watersheds, elevation changes, and more. In Mr. Sanders’ class, the 3-D image is simultaneously projected onto the Smartboard screen as well as the sand. The screen component provides students a chance to compare their 3-D model to a 2-D topographic map and allows a whole classroom to see what is happening in the sandbox. “Using the AR sandbox is a fun way to learn how steep and gentle slopes show up on a topographic map; it shows how to contour line spacing is related to the landscape,� said eighth-grade student Rehanna.
