YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. ADVANCED BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2022 - Connetquot Public Library participated in the 17th Annual Suffolk County Advanced Battle of the Books held at Sachem Library on Saturday, February 12. Teens from Grades 9-12 competed in this county-wide inter-library competition based upon two selected young adult novels, Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhonda Belleza and Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. Eight libraries participated in this year’s advanced battle. The Connetquot team, Yours Truly, Lost in Space, consisted of Varsh Basa, Courtney DeCristofaro, Samantha Carr, Lilia Livolsi, and Teen Coordinator Dina Oliveira. This competition promotes a love of reading, the opportunity to explore different genres, the chance to enjoy time with peers, and foster teamwork. The library is exceptionally proud of all its participants who represent the library and our community through a host of community service activities and academic and extracurricular activities.

In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Sarah Grace Foundation To Host Virtual 5K Race

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is once again calling all runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes for its 2022 virtual 5K. Participants in the “Hugs for Sarah 2022 Virtual 5K” can run alone, with a friend or with a team, and all entrants will receive a custom race bib and medal. Registration is online only and will take place from March 21 to April 30 with a registration fee of $35. Participants can sign up on the Foundation’s website, https:// thesarahgracefoundation. org/shop-donate/. Anyone registering prior to March 31 will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card as well. “In the absence of in-person fundraising events, virtual events have become crucial in helping fulfill the Sarah Grace Mission: providing smiles to children with cancer, one child at a time!” said Matt Weippert, president of the Foundation. “As we enter a post pandemic world we look forward to once again hosting in-person events such as our annual Night of Laughter and perhaps an in-person 5K” An email address is required during registration in order for participants to receive their

race bibs. All participants must also provide a street address to receive their medals. The Foundation encourages all participants to share photos from their virtual 5K with the hashtag #HugsForSarah5K”. Photos may also be emailed to the Foundation. Participants can begin the race any time after registration, but must share their completion efforts prior to May 31. The Sarah Grace Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her nine-month battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah’s birthday is March 31 so join Matt, Marissa, and James Weippert as well as the Foundations supporters as they run the 3.1 for Sarah and all children with cancer in the #HugsForSarah5k. Spread the word about “Hugs For Sarah” and honor Sarah’s memory on March 31st by thinking about how sweet life is and how short it can be. Hug someone you love, tell them what they mean to you. Hug your children and do something special with them. Do it for you; do it for them; do it for Sarah! All proceeds from the race will support the programs and activities of The Sarah

Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, an all-volunteer organization. Core programs include The Escape Hatch, Chemo Duck, The Bead Program, Sarah Grace’s Book Angels and holiday activities. The Foundation also provides financial aid for families, including; meals, transportation, household expenses and funeral expenses. Sagamore Gold Basketball Team Finishes Season Undefeated

The Sagamore Middle School boys gold basketball team in the Sachem Central School District recently finished their season with an undefeated record, with 10 wins and zero losses. The hardworking team of student-athletes led

by coach Stephen Bachy dedicated themselves to the sport and their fellow teammates to work together to achieve this incredible accomplishment. The team, which is a combination of seventh and eighth grade students,

is the first middle school basketball team at Sagamore to finish a season undefeated since the 19992000 season. The players are grateful to their fans, parents and community for their support this season.

SARAH GRACE FOUNDATION TO HOST VIRTUAL 5K RACE - A team of students from Hicksville, Sarah’s hometown, participated in the inaugural Virtual 5K hosted by the Sarah Grace Foundation in 2021.

Sycamore Avenue Elementary School third grade student Alexa Arnold and fifth grade student Sydney Chavez has been selected as featured artists in the Colors of

Long Island Student Art Exhibition, to be held at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Their artwork will be on display through April 3 along with some of Long Island’s most

talented young artists in grades K-12. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Alexa and Sydney for this outstanding artistic accomplishment.

During a recent board of education meeting, Connetquot High School students and Suffolk Zone Award recipients Leila Joseph and Ben Lillie were recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic endeavors. Sponsored by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the award recognizes one male and one female Suffolk County high school senior from each school district who exemplifies outstanding scholastic ability, physical education performance and leadership qualities. With a GPA of 91.28, Leila is vice president of student government and the Class of 2022. She is also a member of the National Technical Honor

Society and a peer leader. Leila has also acquired national certification as a clinical medical assistant. Leila said, “In my second period class with Ms. Perry, I learned I can be a leader and a team member at the same time. I’m able to encourage participation while also having fun with others. In the future, I’ll use these skills to make changes in, not only mine, but many other communities.” Ben has acquired a 93.72 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Business Honor Society. He was accepted on the Academic Principal High Honor Roll and received the Presidential Award of Excellence. Ben is a member of the varsity volleyball and spring track teams and has acquired the

designations of All-County, All-County Tournament and Team MVP. He plans on pursuing a career in business at Sacred Heart University. “Health and physical education have taught me a lot of skills and has introduced me to a handful of unique experiences, all of which I plan to take along with me into my next chapter of life.“ Ben said. Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Peter Melore described both Leila and Ben as students “who have such a positive presence in their classes and in our schools and it is wonderful that we can take time to appreciate their efforts.”

With Spring around the corner, Middle Country Central School District is excited to announce the students who have surpassed academic expectations throughout the year. For the month of February, the Middle Country School District is honoring Keyana Demosthene, Allyson Short, Alaina Castaldo, and Max Cherry as students of the month. “It is important to highlight our students and their achievements. Each month, we are honored to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of four outstanding secondary students whose ’ dedication to excellence both in and outside of the classroom is exemplary,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “A round of applause to Keyana, Allyson, Alaina, and Max for all their hard work!”

Keyana Demosthene, a Centereach High School senior, actively participates in many of her school’s functions such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, the PTSA Fashion Show, and Adopta-Child. She is a member of the Centereach High School’s Bible Club, the French Honor Society, the Yearbook Club, and the newly formed Medical Professions Club. Keyana’s current weighted GPA is 96 and she will graduate in June completing four AP courses and an additional six college-level courses. Allyson Short is a valued thespian at Newfield High School. She is currently an active member of the Drum Club, a member of every choir the school offers, and has been active and cast in musicals and drama productions since 6th grade. She is also the secretary of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Vice President of the Thespian Honor Society, and a three-time first-place winner of the Island Idol Competition, second place overall in Suffolk’s Got Talent, and was selected as a soprano vocalist for All-State Chorus. This past May, Allyson was awarded the Certificate of Excellence by the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education. Allyson has been accepted

to Molloy and Marymount Manhattan College where she will be majoring in musical theatre with the hopes of becoming a Broadway star. Alaina Castaldo is an exceptional 8th - grade student at Dawnwood Middle School. Alaina has been a member of the Dawnwood band for the last three years. Outside of the classroom, Alaina has been a competitive gymnast for nearly 10 years and practices a minimum of 18 hours a week. Alaina’s combined average from her academics when she was in 6th and 7th grade was an astounding 99.05 and her average for the second quarter of this school year is 98.28. Alaina’s dream is to participate in gymnastics in college where she can also explore her passion for robotic engineering. Max Chery is an athletic 8th-grade student from Selden Middle School. He plays basketball, participates on the wrestling team, and plans to play lacrosse this spring. Max has shown impressive growth each semester despite the difficulties of virtual learning last year and the rigors of the Regents level classes this year. Aside from sports, Max also plays the violin. His dream is to become a football player, a lawyer, or a teacher.

How St. Patrick’s Day Is Celebrated In Ireland

Initially a religious holiday to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has since evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture. In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others. So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. According to the vacationing resource Travel Awaits, more than 100,000 travelers visit Dublin from March 14 to March 18 to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities. COVID-19

likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national

pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

How To Contribute To The Red Cross

Every March, the American Red Cross honors and celebrates the everyday heroes who help fulfill our humanitarian mission during Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross help communities in their own countries and across the globe every day. The Red Cross is perhaps most visible in the aftermath of natural disasters. However, the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross are active year-round, and there are plenty of ways for individuals to contribute to both organizations throughout the year. • Receive training from the Red Cross. The Red Cross notes that many professions require individuals to master lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. But millions of people are not required to learn such skills, even though they’re useful for anyone. The Red Cross offers an array of courses, including lifeguarding, caregiving and babysitting, swimming and water safety, that train individuals about how to effectively prepare to respond to emergencies.

Enrolling in these courses contributes to the mission of the Red Cross by building its potential base of qualified volunteers who can pitch in when natural disasters or other emergencies occur. • Donate blood. Blood donations are uniquely valuable to the Red Cross at any time, but the organization noted in early 2022 that it was experiencing its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. The Red Cross notes that the pandemic contributed to a 62 percent decline in college and high school blood drives. So while student donors made up roughly 25 percent of all donors in 2019, they now make up just 10 percent of the donor population. Eligible adults, including students, can contribute to the Red Cross by donating as often as possible. Students back on campus can work with school officials and local Red Cross chapters to organize blood drives in their school communities. • Pitch in with disaster relief. The American Red Cross notes that it responds to an emergency every eight minutes.

Perhaps most remarkable is that 95 percent of the organization’s disaster relief workers are volunteers. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross rely on volunteers from all walks of life, and each organization has plenty of opportunities for individuals willing to give back. Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratiﬁed when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York. Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a

wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces on all the happy kids.” This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if

gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day. • Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks

available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

The Spring Equinox the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth.
