uffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore’s staff was on hand at Tecumseh Elementary School in Farmingville recently to read to Mrs. Collins’ third-grade class. The event, Readers Are Leaders Day, was designed to help students learn about pillars of good character and leadership. Leaders of the community were invited to come read a book to each class. On Friday February 6th, the world famous Cirque du Jour troop performed their exciting traveling show, using 5th grade students at Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School located in Bohemia. John Pearl Principal Ms. Susan White welcomed circus advisors Erin and Ray who would work with all the students over the course of a snow-shortened week. Fifth graders were groomed to learn the special circus skills necessary to entertain their fans, classmates and parents for the energetic Friday afternoon
performance. John Pearl’s talented 5th graders worked as clowns, jugglers, daredevils, stilt walkers and masters of the Devil Sticks! The high energy music motivated the performers and audience during the amazing show! The Cirque du Jour program is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education and cultural arts activities. Ms. White would like to thank Cirque du Jour coaches Erin and Ray, along with the school’s Phys Ed instructors Ms.
Marasia and Mr. Sturtz for their work with John Pearl’s budding circus stars! Ms. White was very pleased with the enthusiasm & effort her students demonstrated during the week, and particularly the 5th graders during their Friday afternoon showtime performance for their parents and classmates. Congratulations to all the students, teachers and helpful parents, for the success of this year’s John Pearl Cirque du Jour performance.

lived, ate, worked and played. Mrs. Eskin said that “The children created Wampum belts with symbols that represent items that were important to them. They worked very hard on designing these belts, and the children are very proud to showcase their work.” The original Wampum belts were created using shell beads used by Native Americans in the form of cash. The beads are traditionally white, but include colorful beads. Students designed their personal wampum beads, described their design and significance, and displayed their work in the fourth grade wing of Bosti Elementary School. Congratulations to all the creating 4th graders that worked on this Wampum belt project.

COMMISSIONER HONORED - On Saturday, March 7th, the Brookhaven Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner was held at the Watermill in Smithtown. Their outstanding dedication prevented potentially deadly carbon monoxide situations that could have resulted in the loss of lives caused by the harmful effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Getting The Heart Beating In celebration of Hearth Healthy Month, Middle Country Central School District’s Bicycle Path Pre-K/Kindergarten Center participated in various fitness activities to learn how the human heart works. The students learned about the four
chambers of the heart and its function to distribute blood and oxygen to the body. Students acted as blood droplets and traveled through tunnels to reach all four chambers of the heart, or all four stations of the obstacle course.
Students picked up oxygen (beanbags) from the “lungs” and delivered them to the rest of the body. Other activities included hopscotch, jump rope, sit-ups and push-ups, all exercises that keep the students’ hearts healthy.

SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.
