‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.
Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that registration is now open for the 10th annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up. The event, which is cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 20th at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more
than 20,000 communities across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadways, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 3,300 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall
during regular business hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from May 8th to May 19th. Evening pickups are scheduled for May 16th and May 17th from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. Playing for Peace Today Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco announced the 9th Annual Play for Peace Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place on Saturday, August 12th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex on Sipp Avenue in Medford. “Last year’s tournament was a great success, and with the number of teams who have already expressed interest in playing in this year’s games, I’m confident that the 2017 will be our best year yet,” said Calarco. Last year’s tournament saw a record number of teams and sponsors participate. Major sponsors included Healthfirst,
Bridgehampton National Bank, Gershow Recycling, TRITEC Real Estate, and the Suffolk County PBA. Along with team sponsors also included Suffolk Federal Credit Union, Davis Park Ferry Co., Capital One Bank, the Brookhaven-Roe YMCA, and the PatchogueMedford Congress of Teachers have consistently supported the event from the beginning. Leg. Calarco first organized The Play for Peace Soccer Tournament in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League in response to the 2008 Marcelo Lucero tragedy. The tournament, which is
in its 9th year, has grown to become a tradition, the purpose of which is to bring the sports-loving community together to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, promote tolerance and raise money for local programs and organizations that actively promote ethnic peace, unity, and cultural tolerance. HOME SHOW STUDENTS OF THE MONTH - Recently, Councilmember Kevin LaValle visited Centereach High School to honor the March Students of the Month. The students, who are all Seniors, are outstanding individuals inside and outside the classroom, involved in sports, student government and other student and community activities. Breaking Records meet, several studentathletes performed exceptionally well and will compete at the state level. Senior Brittany Curtain threw a school record of 38 feet, 10 inches in the Shot Put; Senior Kelly Iocca won the 3000-meter by more than three seconds at 10 minutes, 20 seconds and just missed breaking the school record she currently holds; sophomore Emma McLoughlin ran past two veteran athletes to earn a spot in the 300-meter with a time of 41.8 seconds and senior Bryana Padula qualified for the state championships in three separate events – hurdles, with a time of 8.39 seconds, the triple jump,
with a length of 37 feet, 4.5 inches, and the 300 meter, with a time of 41.15 seconds. Bryana’s hurdle race time made her the fastest public high school hurdler in the state. Additionally, freshman Katie Iocca recently performed in the Large School County Championships and finished in second place in the 3000-meter with a time of 10 minutes and 25 seconds, making her the 10th best freshman in the country. “These girls work very hard, and both myself and the entire team are very proud of them,” said coach Michael Austin.

The Connetquot High School girls track and field team continues to break school records, both as a team and on the individual level. The team recently competed in the League Championship against Bay Shore – a team that hadn’t lost the championships in 22 years – and emerged victorious, defeating the competition by a score of 106-99. The following week, the athletes competed in the Suffolk County Championships against more than 40 schools, finishing shy of first place by only eight points. Suffolk Marathon Set track the progress of their favorite runners. The new relay race will be made up of four-member teams running the full marathon. A Freedom Fest, featuring musical entertainment, and the Taste of Long Island Festival, featuring foods, wines and beers from Long Island, will follow the start of the race. “Catholic Health Services (CHS) is proud once again to be the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor for the 3rd Annual Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon and partner with Suffolk County, Hunter EMS and Progressive Emergency Physicians to provide race medicine for this landmark event,” said CHS President & CEO Alan Guerci, MD. “More importantly, CHS is proud to continue its support of Suffolk County’s veterans.” “The Suffolk County Marathon provides us with another opportunity to showcase our beautiful downtowns along the

Other teams raised funds for a nursing scholarship, to support organ transplant recipients and anti-drunk driving efforts. “Thank you to the Suffolk County Marathon for having such a great platform for individuals to do their part in making a difference,” Harbin said. “I look forward to participating in this year’s race as well.” “We are excited to be part of the Suffolk County Marathon 2017 kickoff,” said Dori Scofield of Paws of War, which received a
grant from the 2015 race. “The funds we received will support local veterans and dogs in training at Paws of War.” The marathon course will again begin in Patchogue Village and pass through the heart of the downtowns of Bayport, Sayville, Blue Point and Heckscher State Park, and finish back in Patchogue Village in order to provide more water and scenic views. Race organizers will work with local businesses, civic associations and chambers of commerce to organize watch parties and events along the route. “We’re really looking forward to promoting the Catholic Health Services’ 3rd Annual Suffolk County Marathon and Freedom Fest,” said Discover Long Island President & CEO, Kristen Jarnagin. “Not only does this event bring in many out-of-state visitors to enjoy all our island has to offer, but it also encourages locals to get out and experience home-grown flavors and
fare. Anytime an event can draw a crowd from both near and far, it’s a win for the region.” The race will also have a special veterans category for all active military, reserve and retired veterans. Runners who can’t make it to the race are invited to sign up as virtual run participants, eligible for t-shirts and medals. The marathon is also part of the Long Island Track & Field Grand Prix Race series. All members of LITF are eligible to participate on an individual basis and are awarded points according to how high their score is in their age group. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that the expanded Catholic Health Services third annual Suffolk County Marathon will take place Sunday October 29th, starting and ending in Patchogue. The marathon, half marathon, 5K and newly added marathon relay races support organizations serving veterans living in Suffolk County. The race is also a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon. The 2016 race, with 2,677 registered runners, raised $140,000 for veterans’ organizations. “This event is a great opportunity to support the veterans who have sacrificed so much to our community,” the County Executive said. “Because of these races, we are able to bring a spotlight onto their contributions and raise funds that will provide services for veterans in need.” The race will also feature a GPS application that will allow people to

As a result of their athletic talents, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School fifth-grader Julia Zachmann and fourthgrader Carson Turissini were named winners in the Town of Islip’s annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored by Islip’s Department of Parks,
Recreation and Cultural Affairs, along with cosponsors, the sharpshooter challenge encourages children in local schools to improve their basketball skills while serving as a reminder to “Just Say No to Drugs.” The initial competition takes place during physical education classes where students
are given the chance to score as many baskets as possible in one minute, and first-place winners in the fourth- and fifthgrade levels advance to the finals, where they compete against other first-place winners throughout the Town of Islip.
Student Accomplishments During the Connetquot Central School Board of Education Planning Session/Budget meeting on February 28th, the district recognized two students for their accomplishments. To begin the evening, Idle Hour Elementary School fifth-grader Madison Fiorini was congratulated for advancing to the next level of the Suffolk Region PTA’s “Advancing Artists”
program. Madison’s visual arts project, titled “My Story Tree,” was one of just two projects selected to represent Suffolk County in her division consisting of students in grades 3-5. Additionally, Connetquot High School senior Abigail Savit was recognized by the board for being named a finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Abigail is

one of 15,000 students throughout the nation to achieve finalist standing after being selected as a semifinalist earlier this school year. She earned these honors based on her outstanding PSAT score (1480 out of 1520), academic record and successful completion of a comprehensive application process.

Forgotten Heroes Secret: The Forgotten Heroes,” a film that shares the stories of those who lived during that time period. To enhance their understanding of the film, the students spoke candidly with Vincent Marmorale, a retired social studies teacher of 33 years and a producer on the film. They also heard from Barbara Bernard, a veteran teacher and an associate of Mr. Marmorale, who is devoted
to Holocaust education. Both individuals spoke about their experiences in the production of the film and the people they met along the way. The Connetquot High School Foreign Language Honor Society recognized the importance of keeping such stories alive by making a generous donation to Mr. Marmorale’s organization, Italians and the Holocaust Foundation.

On the first day of March, in order to kickstart Women’s History Month, Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the distinct privilege of taking part in Brookhaven’s Tribute to Women in Commerce and Professions, which was hosted at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. The event was held to honor the great women we have here in our community who have achieved success in their professional lives, and the many programs that are locally available to help women who are in
need. Brookhaven also established the 1st Annual “Edna Gerrard Excelsior Award” and honored 19 women of distinction for 2016, who are members of Decisions, a women’s empowerment group that helps women succeed. Brookhaven has many women’s groups such as a domestic violence group, women’s support groups and divorce information classes; they also have a “Dress For Success” program that has clothed almost 5,000 women with business professional clothes.
“It was a privilege to be a part of this event to honor and support women; there are so many amazing women in my community. I am so proud of all that Decisions does in support of women,” said Legislator Kennedy. Teachers Association Honored
On March 2nd the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was honored at the Cohalan Cares for Kids dinner, hosted by the Suffolk County Bar Association in Hauppauge. CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr. and members of the association’s executive board were on hand for this special recognition. Representing the membership of the CTA Felicio accepted the award for the association’s consistent support of the Suffolk County Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. “On behalf of the members of the CTA I want to express my gratitude to the EAC (Education & Assistance Corporation)
& the Cohalan Children’s Center for recognizing the contributions of Connetquot’s professional educators. It will be an honor for me to share this plaque with the CTA membership,” said Felicio. The CTA President went on to say that “… whatever and whenever the Cohalan Center is in need, you have our number. Give us a call and we will do what we can to make it happen.” Felicio also thanked the CTA board members who were able to attend the dinner, as well as the entire membership for its contributions for the youngsters at the Children’s Center. The Cohalan Children’s Center provides a safe environment for youngsters while their families are involved
in court proceedings. For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, clothing, toys, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center. When the youngsters leave the Children’s Center they take with them coats, hats gloves and books to share at home with their siblings. The Children’s Center is open five days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year the center serviced over 1500 children. State Senator John J. Flanagan recently arranged for the center to receive a NYState financial grant to extend the current hours.

The event, which will be held on March 30th, at 7:00 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall and is open to the public, is sponsored by the Town’s Office of Women’s Services. Nominated by members of the community, the winners either live or work in the Town of Brookhaven and have demonstrated excellence in a variety of areas. Nominations were considered by members of Brookhaven’s Women’s Advisory Board and selected based on resumes and letters of recommendation.
