Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

Letitia James, the first AfricanAmerican and first woman elected to serve as Attorney General of the State of New York, as the distinguished Keynote Speaker. A Saint Who’s Not A Saint

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

Finalists At The First Tech Challenge (FTC) Competition The Longwood Junior High School eighthgrade robotics team, The Lioneers, have been designated finalists at the First Tech Challenge (FTC) competition. The team qualifies to participate at the SBPLI-FIRST FTC Championship on March 7 at Syosset High School. Working with coaches Jackie Legnon and Sharon Hinkson, the students developed STEM skills

and practice engineering principles while understanding the value of teamwork and innovation. â€œWe are so proud of our students,â€? said coadvisor Sharon Hinkson. â€œThe team was founded this year, and the students have done a phenomenal job of working together to design, build, program, and operate a robot to compete in head-to-head competitions.â€?

FIRST Tech teams design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. The robot kit is reusable from year to year and coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Teams design and build robots, design, and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards.

caused extensive property damage and aftershocks continue. Soacha, a resident of Ronkonkoma, is a clinical social worker for CHS’s Good Shepherd Hospice. Camargo, a Farmingdale resident, is a licensed master’s social worker at CHS’s Mercy Medical Center. They were in Puerto Rico from February 3 to February 10 as part of the GNYHA team. During their time in Puerto Rico, Soacha and Camargo visited several communities including

Guyanilla, Guanica and Ponce where they spoke with residents and provided information about available services. They listened to locals and provided mental health tips to help earthquake survivors cope with the difficult situation they face. “There are many people who are afraid to be in their homes,” said Soacha. “They are unsure when the next earthquake will happen, how strong it will be and if their house will collapse with them inside.”

As families work to repair the homes, the damage caused by the earthquakes is having a major impact on local children. Damaged schools have been closed for more than a month and many students are now with their families living in tents at recovery camps. “With schools destroyed it has led to feelings of anxiety and depression among many students,” Camargo said. Soacha and Camargo felt compelled to volunteer after seeing the struggles Puerto Rico residents have had in

recovering from natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. “As someone who is Hispanic I felt obligated to help,” Soacha explained. “It was also a chance as a human being to step up and provide assistance to those in need.” Camargo added, “As an educated Hispanic woman born and raised in the United States, I felt it was my duty to assist the communities in need in Puerto Rico. The people have been very receptive to the services provided, which drives my

Reptilian Fun Students in Connetquot Central School District’s English as a New Language department and their families recently enjoyed a night of reptilian fun. During its biannual ENL Family Night, the department welcomed animal science and wildlife education professional “Erik the Reptile Guy,”

who introduced the students and their families to his reptile counterparts and taught them about the unique qualities of each one. The students even had the opportunity to touch and hold some of them, including snakes, turtles and lizards. In addition to Erik’s presentation, the group

also engaged in reptilethemed crafts and were served a pizza dinner.
