This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

We’ve also been working closely with the IRS to head up an education program to help other organizations across Long Island go online as well. While most continue to struggle with COVID concerns, safety is our number one priority.” Bethpage has secured over 50 trained volunteers from Adelphi University, Long Island University, Molloy College, and New York Institute of Technology, who will work one-on-one virtually with tax payers to prepare the returns. Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits. Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting

Autism Communities (Deer Park, NY, www. autismcommunities. org), a private, 501(c) (3) organization, whose mission is to provide housing solutions for adults with autism in independent, safe, and inclusive living environment, has created a new resource for individuals with autism and their families. Club AC offers monthly social and educational events for adults with autism and their families. Among the educational topics which have been or will be covered are home technologies for individuals with autism, emergency preparedness, vocational skills and resources, guardianship, ABLE accounts, and person-centered housing plans. Recreational activities include bingo games, drive-in movies, painting and dance classes. According to Autism Communities Chairman Paul Pedretti, a father of a daughter with autism, “The feedback we have been receiving for Club AC has been great for all participants. For individuals with autism, there are new friends

to make and socializing opportunities. Their family members are also making new acquaintances of other parents and siblings who share similar experiences living with a family member on the spectrum. Additionally, we are getting an excellent response to our educational programs which are centered on real issues and concerns. For these programs, we are securing experienced professionals who can provide valuable information and ultimately, peace of mind.” Club AC is a one of kind program on Long Island. Prior to the pandemic’s restrictions, its programs were live. Currently, virtual formats are being used, but still delivering tremendous value to Club AC members and guests. The funds were raised during Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s 22nd annual fundraising campaign in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys

for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s also introduced its own “Tots for Tots” program, offering guests an additional way to donate by adding tater tots to any order for just $3, with each sale going directly to the organization. Since

its inception, Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises have raised $4.9 million through its Toys for Tots fundraising campaign to benefit local communities in Florida, Georgia, Long Island and New Jersey. In just 2020 alone, Toys for Tots distributed 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million children.

Caracappa Attends COVID-19 Memorial Press Conference to Honor Victims On Monday, March 1, 2021, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa joined other elected officials to attend a COVID-19 Memorial press conference to memorialize and honor over 3,000 residents of the County who’ve lost their lives this past year to the Coronavirus. The event, which took place at the William H. Rogers Building of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge, marked the opening of the Suffolk County COVID-19 Memorial project. Families

of COVID-19 victims were invited to tie the first few ribbons onto a structure that has been assembled by a local scout troop in front of the building. The structure will remain on display throughout the month of March, giving Suffolk families of the departed an opportunity to add a ribbon in their loved one’s memory. “We’ve all had to face the realization of what this deadly Coronavirus is capable of,” stated Legislator Nick Caracappa. “Whether directly or indirectly impacted, we

as a community grieve the many lives lost due to Covid-19, and should commit to keeping the memories of our loved ones alive. As we take the necessary steps to reduce and eliminate this deadly virus, it’s also important to continually acknowledge and appreciate the frontline workers for their tireless efforts this past year. The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! Encouraging Dignity For All Students

Elementary and middle schools in the Connetquot Central School District recently participated in the district’s annual “Dignity for All Students Act Week,” which promotes acceptance and unity in all aspects. Edith L. Slocum Elementary School facilitated a “kindness chain reaction” project where each class was assigned another class for which to complete an act of kindness. Fourth and fifth graders at the school also embarked on a scavenger hunt, using educational posters hung around

the building to answer questions about mental health and bullying. DASA week at Cherokee Street Elementary School featured daily dressup themes, including superhero day because “superheroes take a stand against bullying” and jersey day because “everyone counts.” At John Pearl Elementary School, students enjoyed a virtual assembly hosted by nonprofit Camfel Productions, centering around themes such as being the best version of oneself and treating others with kindness.

The week’s programming at Ronkonkoma Middle School included a virtual yoga program available to all students, a DASAthemed art showcase and an activity in which students wrote about what makes them special by answering the prompt “I am more than…” Connetquot Central School District thanks all elementary and middle school faculty and staff for working hard to ensure another successful DASA week, as well as the students for enthusiastically participating in the week’s activities.
