To help residents quit smoking, the Town of Brookhaven will conduct a free six-week smoking cessation program beginning Thursday, April 28th and continuing every Thursday through June 3rd. Meetings will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Bureau conference room on the second floor of Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville. Attendees will learn the skills needed to be tobacco free, including techniques in stress management, behavioral modification and relaxation. Medication to help smokers kick the habit will be provided for a nominal fee. To register or for more information, please call 631.451.6174. The smoking cessation program is co-sponsored by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

It’s in the clouds, the trees, a weary morning’s coffee. Chaotic and beautiful in fashion, but yes, poetry surrounds us. It just waits to be found.

Encouraging Independence Each day as students enter Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center, the sixth graders locate their lockers, unpack their backpacks, take off their coats and jackets, hang them up, then go into their classroom to put away their communication books. Special Education Teacher Pamela CadenRoberts said, “The lockers are located directly outside the classroom. The student’s names are on the lockers; some are color coded.” Some students recognize their
names; some know their locker because of the color coding. Using lockers in this special education program is very beneficial. Roberts said, “I work in the middle school program at Masera. Independence is encouraged.” Self-help skills and living skills are taught in the classroom and generalized so they are usable at home. “The lockers may represent a closet at home,” said Roberts. What the students are learning at school is meant to carry over to their home and
other aspects of their life. Roberts said, “Because the students are responsible for their locker, they gain self-esteem and structure. Having a locker makes them feel special and distinct from the elementary school students in the building.” Masera Learning Center provides a transdisciplinary program, using Applied Behavior Analysis to address the needs of elementary through middle schoolaged students with autism and related developmental disabilities.
Letters of Intent Two talented Longwood High School studentathletes celebrated their commitment to play college football by signing their National Letter of Intent for their respective Division I schools. Signing for LIU Post, Anthony Lavio has enjoyed an outstanding senior year. Named All-Division, All-Metro, and All-Long Island, Anthony is a top blocker who consistently dominated the line of
scrimmage. Anthony will pursue a degree in Business. A two-sport varsity athlete, Matthew Weiss will play for Southern Connecticut State University. As the District’s first back to back winner of the prestigious Zellner Award, Matthew served as football team captain and has been named AllCounty, All-Division, AllMetro, All-Long Island, USA Today High School All-
American and First Team NY State Offensive Tackle. Outside the classroom, Matthew is a football coach for LYSA and volunteers for Relay for Life. Matthew will major in Business and plans to pursue a career as a police officer. The letter of intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and a Division I or II school.

Committing to College Nineteen Newfield (NHS) and Centereach High School (CHS) students at Middle Country Central School District signed letters of intent in honor of National Signing Day to demonstrate their commitment to college sports teams. The students were joined by their families, coaches and school administrators before formally accepting the various athletic scholarships. Among the 19 students, are four Newfield High School football players, recently named Long Island Class II Champions last season. This includes Jelani Greene, recipient of the school’s first National Football Foundation award, presented to Suffolk County’s top wide receiver; and Elijah Riley, who received the Carl A. Hanson and Tom Cassesse awards, presented to Suffolk County’s top player and the top defensive back respectively. Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico was joined by Supervisor Ed Romaine and fellow board members in paying special tribute to Moriches resident Bobby Lenahan, for his invention of IV Hero, a thoughtful and innovative product that covers intravenous bags with superhero characters. Councilman Panico and the board formally recognized Bobby at the February 25th Town Board meeting. Pictured left to right are Councilman Kevin LaValle, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright, Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Bobby Lenahan, Councilman Panico, Supervisor Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and Councilman Neil Foley. Bobby created IV Hero with hopes that it would make hospital stays and medical treatments for children less intimidating. To date, IV Hero is currently being used in the pediatric departments at South Nassau Community Hospital, Northwell Staten Island University, and NYU Langone Medical Center.
His IV Hero also won first place in the Regional Division of the New York Business Plan Competition for New York State College students. Bobby – a 2013 graduate of William Floyd High
School – is a junior at Molloy college where is studying accounting. Bobby has also been an active member and volunteer of the Moriches Bay Civic Association.

A new round of scholarships to encourage high school students to pursue high tech careers in New York State is available. The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top ten percent of students in New York high schools if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York State for five years after graduation. To qualify for a STEM
award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. HSEC SUNY STEM Scholarship Award Eligibility An applicant must: be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; be a U.S. citizen or
eligible non-citizen; be a high school senior/ recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/her high school graduating class
of a NYS high school; be matriculated in an undergraduate program leading to a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at a SUNY or CUNY college; earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher each term after the first semester; execute a service contract agreeing to reside and work in NYS for five years in the field of Science, Technology,

Scholarships Available Engineering or Mathematics; not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state award. Students matriculated in these programs of study may be eligible for a STEM Incentive Program award. The program of study must result in an approved

Chosen to Participate Ten Longwood High School students were chosen to attend a very special event at Brookhaven National Laboratory to celebrate the second anniversary of the My Brother’s Keeper initiative. My Brother’s Keeper is a public-private initiative launched by President Barack Obama in February of 2014 to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by young men of color. Supported by the White House, several departments of government, and many foundations and corporations, this long-
term program joins federal, state, and local governmental agencies in concert with businesses, educational institutions, and foundations, who together are taking important steps to connect young people to mentoring, support networks, and the skills they need to fulfill a promising future. Held on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and the State University of New York at Old Westbury hosted a select group of students from across Long Island and the metropolitan area
for a special one-day visit to Brookhaven National Laboratory. Throughout the day, students gained knowledge of the skills and tools needed to advance to postsecondary education or training and see for themselves the possibilities their futures might hold. Students were also provided with an opportunity to listen to, meet, and speak with several leaders from BNL who are men of color. The program included a tour of the premiere research facility and participation in a hands-on science activity.
