Luncheon a Success

A crowd of over 800 Long Islanders attended the 16th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 15th. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s honorees included Cary Carbonaro, Certified Financial Planner, Managing Director, United Capital, Joy Fernandez, Managing Partner, Ernst & Young, Long Island Office and Rita DiStefano, Director, HR Consulting Portnoy, Messinger, Pearl & Associates, Inc. Our Community Honoree was Premier Cardiology. Those in attendance also heard from stroke survivor and national Go Red For Women spokesperson,

Lisa Deck. Her story of surviving 5 strokes was an inspiration to everyone in the crowd. “Participating in this event was an inspiring experience.” said Antonia M. Donohue, Chair of Banking and Financial Services, Practice Group, Jaspan Schlesinger LLP who chaired this years’ event. Tamsen Fadal, PIX 11 News Emmy Award Winning News Anchor did an amazing job as event emcee. Amidst a bevy of hospital staff, family, friends and reporters eagerly awaiting his arrival, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) volunteer Arthur Seidman entered the room like a conquering hero. The special occasion, a century in the making, was the celebration of Mr. Seidman’s 100th birthday. A Northwell

Health volunteer since 1995, Mr. Seidman spends at least 15 hours a week assisting patients and their families in the surgical waiting room at NSUH. He also provides comfort to patients at Northwell’s Monter Cancer Center and serves on North Shore’s auxiliary board (as chairman for the Tribute Fund and the Car Raffle).

Special invited guests were his son, Dr. Steven Seidman, daughter, Jane Krakauer, and granddaughter, Kim. Kicking off the festivities was NSUH Executive Director Alessandro Bellucci, MD, who presented the guest of honor with a gift certificate and read a proclamation from local government. “I’m pleased to announce that Arthur holds the record for time served as a volunteer,” said Dr. Bellucci. “For that reason, and for everything he’s done for this hospital, we are once again naming Arthur Seidman Volunteer of the Month. He is now the only person in our history to receive that designation twice.” The dashing Mr. Seidman is a World War II veteran who was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for distinguished service in the Philippines under General McArthur.

Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953! His commitment to the health system is legendary. Recently, during a difficult snow storm, when en route to the hospital from his home in Great Neck, Mr. Seidman offered a ride to a much younger colleague who required assistance to get to his volunteer post. A very emotional Mr. Seidman described his feelings about turning 100. “I’ve lived a very eventful life,” he said. “I’ve always tried to be as good as I could be. My father was my role model; I tried to behave as he did. So, for me, coming to the hospital and working with other people who are really in need is a reason for me to get up in the morning. This is a labor of love. I love being here.” Not one to rest on his laurels, Mr. Seidman is already planning his activities for next month – a relaxing cruise to the Caribbean with his beloved companion.

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

Seventeen on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

Longwood Elementary School students joined hundreds of schools and youth organizations across the United States during the week of February 6th – 10th to participate in Start with Hello. The program was created by Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit organization led by several family members who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2012. Throughout all four elementary school buildings, meaningful

activities were held to increase awareness of the growing epidemic of social isolation in schools and communities, as well as to empower students to create a culture of connectedness within their school walls and beyond. Students took the pledge to reach out to others so that no one felt alone, wore name tags, sang the Hello song, participated in random acts of kindness, and greeted one another in the hallway, in the classroom, and in the lunchroom.

Staff and students wore the color green as a sign of solidarity and promise to create an inclusive community. To start new conversations and to encourage students to learn about one another, students wore an article of clothing that represented something of importance to them. The week-long event promoted acceptance, respect, and compassion as part of the Sandy Hook Promise.

The Boy Scouts of America has selected Robert M. Koch of Ronkonkoma as a Silver Antelope recipient. The Silver Antelope Award recognizes registered Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a region and is presented by the National Court of Honor on behalf of regions. In the seventy-five years that the award has been presented, STARTING WITH HELLO West Middle Island student Madeline Dobias takes the Bob becomes the fifth scouter from Suffolk Start with Hello Pledge to listen, be kind, and reach out to others. County Council to earn the Silver Antelope. An active adult member of the Suffolk County Council (BSA) for more than 42 years (52 years

including his time as a youth), Eagle Scout Bob Koch’s an impact on Scouting is well known in the scouting community and he has served in just about every position from Cub Scout Pack Committee Chair to Scoutmaster and Venturing Crew Advisor on the local level to Council Commissioner, Executive Vice President, Council Venturing Training Chair and Order of the Arrow Vigil Advisor and on a regional level as Area 7 and Area 2 Venturing Advisor, Membership VP, Area Youth Protection Champion, and Northeast Regional Associate Venturing Advisor. His accomplishments in

Scouting started as a youth earing his Arrow of Light, then Eagle Scout and OA Vigil, (the trifecta of Scouting a friend recall him calling it on a Venturing trip to Alaska) A Silver Beaver Award recipient, he has also been recognized in scouting with O.A. Vigil Honor, District Award of Merit, Venturing Leadership Award (Council and Area), E Urner Goodman Founders Award, SCC Trailblazer District Green Bar Bill Lifetime Achievement Award, Distinguished Commissioner Award, and Distinguished Citizen Award. Having served as President and one of the founders of the St. John the Baptist Alumni Association, he was been an active member of the SJB Alumni Association. At Northrop Grumman, Mr. Koch has been recognized for developing a Career Development program, is a member of the Veterans Support Committee and of the Generations to Generations Committee. Suffolk County Council (BSA) is very proud to have this venerable Scouter from our Council receive this prestigious Regional Award which will be bestowed on him at the National Meeting in May.

Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently welcomed the English as a New Language Department to the school to host the 2017 ENL Family Fun Night as an opportunity for guests to interact with one another and enjoy internationally renowned cuisine. While students participated in creative and fun activities sponsored

by the Connetquot High School Civic Club with the theme of “Love Makes the World Go ‘Round,” parents were able to attend two workshops during the event – “The Role of the School Nurse” and “Using the Parent Portal.” “This event is a great way for families in the district to connect with one another and learn about the many programs that the district has to offer,”

Family Fun Night said Director of ENL and World Languages Denise Hannaoui. Connetquot’s ENL program consists of more than 75 students from various locations around the globe including Bangladesh, China, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Greece, India, Mexico, Pakistan and Turkey.

Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) students at the Academy at Ward Technical Center in Riverhead and Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale hosted separate Healthy Heart Clinics in February servicing over 300 clients. They practiced the skills they are learning such as monitoring body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure. They also conducted glucose and cholesterol testing. Each student was assessed by their teacher on whether they followed

safety precautions, and if they documented and explained results to the client. CMA Teacher Betty Martin said, “Students were also required to research and create an informational pamphlet on healthy heart practices or on diseases or heart conditions like pericarditis and endocarditis.” The pamphlets were offered to the clients at the conclusion of the examination. The CMA course encompasses anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, clinical and laboratory procedures, as

well as medical law and ethics. CMA Teacher in Riverhead Michelle Burton shared that the students participate in local clinical internships and may attain national certification from the Certified Health Professionals. “Hosting a Healthy Heart Clinic and offering services to agency staff, administrators, and students enrolled in other programs, allows the CMA students to practice their skills they will use working in the health care industry,” said Burton.

Fresh Air Fund Conference

The Long Island volunteer committee attended The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Friday, February 3rd through Sunday, February 5th at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Over the course of three days, volunteers participated in interactive workshops with The Fresh Air Fund’s staff and community agency partners. Volunteers attended professional development workshops throughout the conference, with topics ranging from children’s safety, to empathy and diversity, to community engagement.

Former Fresh Air child, Inspector Ernest Morales, Commanding Officer of the 42nd Precinct in The Bronx, delivered the keynote speech. Inspector Morales shared with the close to 300 volunteers in attendance how The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program greatly impacted his life. The closing ceremony included inspiring remarks by Fresh Air siblings and concluded with a spectacular performance by the Bronx Theatre High School Step Team. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from

low-income communities since 1877. First time Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 12 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Join families in Long Island this summer as a volunteer host family and provide Fresh Air children with a unique and fun summer experience in a new environment. Student Photo Contest Assemblyman Dean Murray will once again host his annual Student Photography Contest this spring, and invites all high school students in the 3rd Assembly District to take part. This contest focuses on photographs of community-based events, and allows students to showcase their hometowns or schools. “This contest is a great opportunity for our students to explore and show off their creative talent. I’m excited to be hosting this event once again,” said Murray. “I look forward to this contest every year and to the impressive talent that our students have here on

Long Island.” Photographs can consist of town government functions or other public events, a building of some historical significance, or anything that the student feels captures the essence of their community. Entries will be judged by a panel that will look at content, photographic competence, and additional artistic factors. The winner of this contest, along with their parents or chosen guardian, will be invited to be Assemblyman Murray’s guest in Albany during an upcoming session of the New York State Assembly. The winning student will be given a guided tour

of the historic Capitol and allowed access to the Assembly Chamber to take pictures during a live session of the state legislature. The top five photographs will be displayed in the State Legislative Building and all entries will be displayed at the Brookhaven Town Hall. Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to preserve documents that are a vital part of Long Island’s history. The Palmer School

Cline. With the Gardiner Foundation’s grant, LIU will digitize and preserve a collection of historical documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a nationally recognized expert who was a key member of the team that designed and implemented the Electronic Records Archives for the National Archives and Records Administration. Dr. Hunter is Editor of The American Archivist, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of American Archivists. “The Palmer School has been educating archivists and supporting the local historical community for three decades,” said Dr. Hunter. “The generous grant from the Gardiner Foundation will help preserve Long Island’s history and also ensure that the next generation of

profit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services to atrisk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury, Holbrook and Riverhead, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse.
