Musings on March In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it flows, and with

it we too are carried on the breeze as it beckons better things ahead. In the words of a quote I recently came across, We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown. A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. And then, out like a lamb… to brighter days just over the horizon.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! Longwood Central School District is proud to announce that Longwood Junior High School has been re-designated as an Essential Elements School to Watch by the New York State Education Department and the Essential Elements Schools to Watch (EESTW) leadership team. This prestigious designation recognizes the Junior High School’s continued commitment to enhancing school programs and practices. Initially designated in March 2012 and redesignated in in 2015, the school is one of three schools on Long Island, and only 30 in New York State, to receive this prestigious designation. In a letter sent to the District by the State Education Department, Longwood Junior High was commended for developing a model educational program. “Through this rigorous application process and your successful endeavors, the Junior High School has been recognized as

both a National and State School to Watch,” wrote Marybeth Casey, EESTW State Director. State leaders selected Longwood Junior High School for its academic distinction, its responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. Also, the school was proven to show strong leadership, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement. “We are extremely proud and excited to hear that the Junior High School received this re-designation,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “Through the leadership of Principal Adam DeWitt, the teachers and staff have dedicated themselves to continuous improvement as well as supporting students as they reach their full potential.”

The EESTW is a stateadministered national program that seeks to identify middle grades schools that adhere to a rigorous set of criteria and are on a pathway of continuous improvement. Each school earning the designation holds that honor for three years. They must reapply and be reevaluated to continue the honor of calling itself a School to Watch. “Through the support of our Board of Education, administration, parents and community members we can continue the enhancement of the programs we offer,” said Junior High School Principal Adam DeWitt. “We are proud to promote academic achievement in a safe and caring learning environment where each student is positioned to succeed in high school and beyond.” The Junior High School will be recognized at the National Schools to Watch Conference, held on June 27th-30th, 2018 in Washington DC.

February Student of the Month On February 26th, Councilman Kevin LaValle visited Sachem North High School in Ronkonkoma to honor Student of the Month, Emma Hirt. In addition to being a strong student academically, she is the President of Student

Government, member of the Model United Nations team and a volunteer at Stony Brook University Hospital’s operating floor. Emma plans on attending Drexel University after she graduates this spring and aspires to attend medical school and become the

Sachem’s super spellers showed off their skills at the annual fifth-grade districtwide spelling bee on February 7th at Chippewa Elementary School. For more than 20 years, the Sachem Central School District has showcased the top two spellers from each building at the districtwide spelling bee. As champions on the building level, the

20 students met for the chance to be named the top speller. Each year, the bee is held at the school of the previous year’s winner. This year’s contest was judged by Merrimac Elementary Principal Veronica DeCicco, Lynwood Elementary Principal Danielle DeLorenzo and Waverly Elementary Principal John

Ruggero, with Chippewa Principal Patricia Aubrey serving as the official pronouncer. Following a rigorous flurry of words, Gavin Flynn from Grundy Avenue Elementary School was named the winner after successfully spelling the winning word, “impetuousness.”

classroom. Vitale teaches at Brookhaven Learning Center’s included site within the Samoset Middle School and Konnerth is the Canine Careers Teacher at the Islip Career Center in Oakdale.

Brookhaven Learning Center, Islip Career Center, and the included site at Samoset are all Eastern Suffolk BOCES facilities that provide services to students with special education needs. This activity utilized the senses of touch, sight, smell, and hearing. Students learned about the rabbits, what they eat, how they live, when they shed their fur, and took turns sitting with the rabbits and petting them. They watched Konnerth brush the rabbits and use a pedalpowered wheel to spin yarn from the fur. “Multisensory projects are ideal for students with autism,” explained Vitale. “Wrapping a lesson around a topic that exposes as many of their senses as possible helps them to learn and understand.”

The mid-February Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the tenure of three devoted administrators within the district. After a lovely musical introduction courtesy of students representing the Ronkonkoma Middle School music program, Connetquot Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams introduced the individuals recommended for tenure and presented them with tokens of appreciation for their unwavering dedication to the schools and community. Buddy Bench Donation Legislator Tom Cilmi joined students and staff of Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School to accept and applaud Troop 1241’s donation of two “Buddy Benches.” The donation was made possible through fundraising efforts led by Cadette Troop 1241 as part of their Silver Award project. Cadettes, many of whom attended Cherokee Street Elementary School, wanted to give back to the school. The girls raised enough money to donate two benches, one to be placed by the kindergarten playground and the other one by the older children’s playground. The Cadettes held an assembly and explained to the students and staff how

the “Buddy Bench” works. They said, “No child should ever feel alone. If you see a classmate sitting on the bench, you should ask them to play.” Clearly moved by their idea, Legislator Cilmi told the girls how he was very shy in grade school and could have used a Buddy Bench to help him make friends.

Students Get Scientific John Pearl Elementary School students in grades K-5 recently took part in the school’s annual science fair competition, spending weeks researching an important scientific topic and recording their findings to share with the school community. Examples of projects submitted by the students included testing if variances in temperature affect the conductibility of magnets, acid rain and the effect on the environment, and the effect that different liquids have on the decomposition rates of the human tooth. Traveling through Time Merrimac Elementary School students in the Sachem Central School District traveled back in time to the height of the Revolutionary War as part of a Google Expeditions activity, exploring many significant points in 18thcentury American history.

As an enhancement to the classroom curriculum, every fifth-grade class at the school embarked on a guided tour through the 1700s, visiting historically important sites. Students encountered pivotal events of the war such as the Boston Massacre, the

Battle of Lexington and Paul Revere’s midnight ride. In between the virtual visits, the fifth-graders answered questions related to the historical destinations they had witnessed.

Two Science Research students from Sachem High School North in the Sachem Central School District recently showed off their neuroscience skills at the Long Island Brain Bee, held at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University on February 3rd. The annual competition gives interested students a venue to explore multiple disciplines associated with the study of the brain and exposes them to career opportunities available in neurology, neurosurgery, psychology and

neuroscience. Competing among 35 other high school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties, junior Amy DeLury placed second and freshman Nistha Boghra received a certificate of completion for her participation in the contest. The one-day competition is comprised of three components: a written test on brain facts, laboratory demonstrations on normal and pathological human brain and spinal cord specimens, and a test to identify the anatomical structures and functions of a real human brain.

On November 19th, the Connetquot High School Girls’ Volleyball team defeated Shenendehowa High School in Glens Falls, NY, to win their second New York State Championship in three years! At Connetquot High School on Monday, February 26th Coach Justin Hertz unfurled the school’s new championship banner, as the players and coaches were presented personalized championship rings by Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA). “Congratulations to the parents, coaches and student-athletes for this tremendous achievement,”

“I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”
