11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a

wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social

Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. North Shore Animal League America Kicks Off Tour For Life® 2022 NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE AMERICA is kicking off Tour For Life 2022– the world’s largest national cooperative, life-saving pet adoption event – in partnership with Rachael Ray® Nutrish®, featuring a weeklong celebration. From Monday, February 28 through Sunday, March 6 we will be launching the nationwide, eightweek program with

adoptions at our Port Washington, NY Adoption Centers. Tour For Life 2022 will run throughout March and April with weeklong events in 53 cities/towns across 37 states, spotlighting local shelter partners and rescue groups dedicated to finding homes for the animals in their care. Life’s WORC Introduces Planned Giving Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, now celebrating 50 years in operation, is starting off the new year with a new Planned Giving Program. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent,

even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. When I made the decision to make a planned gift to Life’s WORC, and after consulting with my financial advisor, we chose the planned giving option that worked best for me. It doesn’t matter what planned giving vehicle you choose to gift. It only matters that you invest in the future of this great agency that is ensuring the future of my son and the over 2,000 individuals like him supported by Life’s WORC.” To implement its program, Life’s WORC’s Planned Giving Program has a team of experienced professionals consisting of a Planned Giving Administrator, Financial Specialist and Planned Giving Attorney. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. American Heart Association Warns Of Snow Shoveling Health Hazards The American Heart Association says that for most people, shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems. However, the association warns that the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some, as the combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain a person’s heart. For those who are sedentary, or people with existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, the increased workload on the heart from activities such as shoveling of heavy snow, can put them at higher risk for heart attack—where a clot blocks blood flow to a heart artery causing the heart muscle damage or tissue death. This is a life-threatening medical emergency. To help make snow removal safer, the American Heart Association has compiled a list of practical tips. · Give yourself a break. Take frequent rest breaks

during shoveling so you don’t overstress your heart. Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks. · Don’t eat a heavy meal prior or soon after shoveling. Eating a large meal can put an extra load on your heart. · Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. When possible, simply push the snow. · Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1. · Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling. Alcohol may increase a person’s sensation of warmth and may cause them to underestimate the extra strain their body is under in the cold. · Consult a doctor. If you have a medical condition,

don’t exercise on a regular basis or are middle aged or older, meet with your doctor prior to the first anticipated snowfall. · Be aware of the dangers of hypothermia. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. To prevent hypothermia, dress in layers of warm clothing, which traps air between layers forming a protective insulation. Wear a hat because much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head. Heart Attack Warning Signs Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where it is clear what’s happening. But most heart

attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: · Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. · Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. · Shortness of breath

with or without chest discomfort. · Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness · As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Call 9-1-1 emergency medical services (EMS) for rapid transport to the emergency room and treatment when they arrive on the scene. Don’t drive yourself--have someone

drive you to the hospital right away. Heart attacks can cause sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart stops beating, or beats irregularly, failing to pump enough blood. If a victim is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, quick recognition and fast action are the keys to saving a life. What You Can Do Bystanders can help cardiac arrest victims survive, if they act fast. First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away. Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Hands Only CPR is effective in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive” (100 beats per minute) until help arrives. Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ To And From Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Long Island Cares And Island Harvest Food Bank Receive $75,000 Through Bank Of America COVID-19 Employee Booster Initiative Bank of America today announced a $75,000 donation to Long Island Cares and Island Harvest Food Bank to address food insecurity on Long Island, generated by an employee booster shot campaign. An estimated 38 million people were food insecure in the United States in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As the pandemic continues, hunger relief organizations on Long Island and across the country are facing ongoing challenges, such as increased demand for their services and rising food prices.
