Student’s Flag To Fly With Pole To Pole Electric Vehicle Expedition

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School student

Grace Cortright was announced the worldwide flag design contest winner for the upcoming Pole to Pole electric vehicle exhibition. NewsO-Matic digital platform host Russell Kahn, who will be covering and writing about the expedition, sponsored the flag design contest and was on hand on Feb. 10 to announce Grace as the winner. The students regularly watch News-O-Matic in their classroom and were exited and thrilled to meet Mr. Kahn. The flag designs of students Anastasia Schretzmayer and Gracyn Ebner will also accompany the expedition in poster form.

This spring, global electric vehicle adventurers Chris Ramsey and Julie Ramsey will drive an electric vehicle from the North Pole to the South Pole through the Americas. The 10-month excursion will occur over a distance of 17,000 miles to bring awareness of the capability and power of electric vehicles. A video message from the Ramseys was shown to students at an assembly where Grace’s flag was unveiled.

During their video message, the Ramseys said Grace’s design captured the essence of what the Pole to Pole exhibition is about. “It reminded us that there is hope and there’s inspiration in this world,” the Ramseys said. “There are true solutions out there to tackle the climate change situation we have. All we need is to do our bit to protect this fragile planet.”

Douglas Elliman

Realty, one of the largest independent residential real estate brokerages in the United States, announced that it has promoted its Senior Executive Regional Manager of Sales for Hamptons and North Fork, Todd Bourgard, to Chief Executive Officer of Long Island, Hamptons and North Fork, effective immediately. In his new role, Mr. Bourgard will oversee operations

throughout the entire Long Island region, totaling 36 Elliman offices and over 2,000 real estate agents located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, the Hamptons and the North Fork, and Bayside, Queens.

Additionally, Melody Newberry, who has served under Bourgard as VP of Operations, Hamptons and North Fork, will also be promoted to VP of Operations, Long Island, Hamptons and North Fork.

Bourgard’s predecessor, Ann Conroy, has been appointed Chairwoman of Douglas Elliman Long Island.

“Stepping into this role is the biggest honor of my career,” said Bourgard. “The experience of working alongside the best managers, agents and staff in the business is so rewarding and a true

privilege. I’m inspired every day by the talent in this region, the power of the Douglas Elliman brand, the strength of our operations, technology initiatives and growth efforts, and our incredible executive leadership. I’m thrilled to be a part of it all, and as we join our Hamptons and North Fork operations with greater

“Todd has long been an integral member of the Douglas Elliman senior leadership team, spurring our tremendous growth in the Hamptons and on the North Fork, recruiting many new top-performing agents, while retaining the great talent we have attracted over the years,”

said Howard M. Lorber, Executive Chairman of Douglas Elliman. “Under his leadership, Elliman has cemented its position as market leader on the East End of Long Island, with record-breaking numbers in closed sales volume and revenue growth for the last several years. He is a highly skilled and valued executive, and we’re thrilled to see him take his talents to the next level with Douglas Elliman.”

Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner

Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconsetbased Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.

Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The organization also serves as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.

The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping both ends of the leash”

by providing services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local heroes in the community.

“This partnership between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission. Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships that our veterans and first responders face every

day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.

During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated

animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.

Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the

lives of these heroes and at the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.

For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including United Cerebral Palsy, ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe

Center LI, New Ground and Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center. LIE members’ efforts have positively impacted thousands of lives on Long Island.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Kicks-Off Virtual Fundraising Hay Drive

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has kicked off its virtual fundraising hay drive. The three-month campaign is intended to help Pal-OMine raise funds to pay for the hay needed to feed its herd and help offset the rising costs of hay.

To grow hay, hundred of acres of land is required in addition to extensive physical labor and expensive equipment to deliver hay from the farmer to Pal-O-Mine’s herd. Here are some details associated

with the cost factors:

-One bale of hay weighs 50-70 lbs.

-One bale of excellent quality hay costs approximately $14; an increase of 40% from last year.

-Pal-O-Mines herd eats 18 bales (1,000 lbs.) of hay daily

-Pal-O-Mine receives a delivery of 810 bales of hay every six weeks at a cost of $6,600 at a cost of approximately $57,200 annually.

Through the virtual fundraising hay drive, PalO-Mine’s goal is to raise $12,000.

About Pal-O-Mine

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.

Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.

Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

The Late Dr. Karen J. Lessler Honored

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog.

Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.

A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Unwinding With Therapy Dogs

Middle Country Central School District’s New Lane Elementary School students recently had the opportunity to learn about and benefit from the Love on a Leash therapy dog program during a visit to the school by several of the organization’s therapy dogs and their owners.

“We know that school can be stressful for some students, they can get overwhelmed due to various factors, so we wanted to provide a healthy

outlet for our students to release their stress and wind down,” said Phyllis L. Saltz, Principal of New Lane Elementary School. “Our students find comfort and a way to de-stress around these specially trained dogs. The sessions also provide an opportunity for our students to learn new social skills while interacting with the therapy pets.”

Love on a Leash is a not-for-profit organization that provides a platform

to encourage volunteers to engage in a meaningful and productive therapy dog program. The organization’s mission is “to bring comfort, happiness, and healing to more people nationwide by increasing public awareness of pet therapy.” The organization provides its volunteers with an accessible certification process that qualifies them to provide pet therapy in their community as part of a qualified therapy team.

Each year, millions of Americans come together to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local, state and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at 3,702 participating locations - as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. Today, the national nonprofit announces the theme for 2023 is “Serve and Succeed.”

The inspiration for this year’s theme came while discussing the significance of 2022’s theme, which was “Find a Way to Serve,” and the need to continue to stress the importance of service and the positive ways it can impact lives. Wreaths Across America plans to focus on the storylines of veterans and military families who have found success through their own service, while also highlighting local volunteers across the country and the success that comes from serving their communities. The organization will continue its commitment to supporting and bringing attention to the needs of our veteran community while also showcasing the continued contributions of those who serve.

“There are many ways to serve your community and country, and just as many definitions of success,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “We hope through focusing on those stories of success we will help change the dialogue around what it means to serve your country.”

In 2022, more than 2.7 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,702 participating locations around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud. Wreaths Across America volunteers work year-round to ensure military laid to rest are remembered, their families and living veterans are honored, and the next generation is taught about the value of freedom.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 16, 2023. It is a free event and open to all people. For more information on how to volunteer locally or sponsor a wreath for an American hero, please visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. Retiring Early

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect.

Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement

age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
