On February 14th, was joined by local Mayor Allan M. Dorman, elected officials to Village of Islandia, accept ownership of Old Nichols Road Park from the Town of Islip. He received a certificate from the Office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo giving ownership of the ball field, which will be renamed Village of Islandia First Responders Memorial Recreational Field. In May 2013, New York State Senator Lee Zeldin and Assemblyman Al Graf co-sponsored legislation authorizing the Town of Islip to transfer ownership of the seven-acre Old Nichols Road Park to the village. The bill gives the village sole proprietorship of the ball field at no cost and provides the village residents with more recreational opportunities. The bill passed the Senate on June 17th, 2013 and the Assembly four days later. It was then signed into law by Governor Cuomo on October 21st, 2013. The ball field will be renamed the Village of Islandia First Responders Memorial Recreational Field in honor of the memory of five first responders from Islandia who were killed in the September 11th, 2001 273575N0226

Cablevision is seeking high school students to participate in the Smithsonian Channel’s Make Your Mark contest, an opportunity to win money for a school or community project. In honor of Black History Month, students can submit a video idea, or mark, that will leave a lasting impression on their community or school. The Smithsonian Channel project grows out of the documentary Breath of Freedom, which tells the story of AfricanAmerican soldiers who returned from World War II and made their mark by taking up the civil rights struggle in the United States. Students are invited to watch the documentary and then record a video that showcases an idea on how a school or

Luncheon A Great Success!

More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 12th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Speak Red” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know. The 2014 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and the North Shore LIJ Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor. The color red was everywhere from women’s dresses to men’s ties. This year’s 13th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon honorees

Stella Mendes, President, First National Bank of New York was chair of the luncheon and Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and Dr. Stacey Rosen, V.P. Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. for many years. As a result, in 1969, Buddy Fuoco and the Brookhaven Italian American Club began donating all proceeds from the Fuoco Memorial exclusively to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Years later, the Rotary Club became the sponsor, and continues the tradition today, along with the Fuoco family. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Approximately 100 people participated in a daylong contest to determine who could perform the most sit-ups or push-ups in a given period of time. Dear Little Dollies,

a unique doll collectors shop in Bellmore, was the presenting sponsor for the event. Other groups and organizations in attendance included Molloy College, Kellenberg High School, and Nancy Burner & Associates. Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately. Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School third grade student Maggie Sullivan recently had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop and U.S. Senator Charles Schumer to lobby their support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Through the Promise To Remember Me campaign,

which aims to bring the awareness of diabetes to lawmakers, active JDRF Youth Ambassadors like Miss Sullivan promote Type 1 Diabetes awareness in their communities across the country. Miss Sullivan also encouraged Cherokee Elementary School faculty members and her classmates to wear blue outfits to help bring

further awareness for Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes in children, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes is a condition in which a child’s pancreas no longer produces the insulin the child needs to survive, making them dependent on constant insulin injections.

The Greater Patchogue Foundation and the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s Cultural Heritage Committee have named Patrick Moore of Patchogue as the 2014 Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Parade and May the Road Rise to Meet Ye 5K on Sunday, March 30th, at 12:30 p.m. Moore was born in Dublin, Ireland and is a long time Patchogue resident active in the Patchogue Amvets and Patchogue Elks Lodge. “Our St. Patrick’s Irish heritage events are among Patchogue’s most popular annual happenings

and they have grown to become the largest celebration presented by the Greater Patchogue Foundation’s Cultural Heritage Committee,” said Tom Keegan, chair of the Cultural Heritage Committee. “We welcome all to wear green and join us at these wonderful festive occasions. Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) student Jessica seeks to accomplish the highest achievement in the world of Girl Scouts, the Girl Scout Gold Award. In order to attain this prestigious award she has to challenge herself to change the world. Jessica had to identify an issue, investigate it thoroughly, create a plan, present it, and educate and inspire others. Jessica plans to change the world one presentation

at a time. She presented to her peers at the Bellport Academic Center Program at Patchogue-Medford High School (PMHS), and to students in a psychology class at PMHS. Her topic - autism. Jessica is on the autism spectrum and has braved challenges in her life. “I want to share my personal journey,” said Jessica. “Having autism used to be a negative stigma for me but I don’t think it is anymore. My reality used to be total

isolation but with the help of the ESBOCES teachers, I think it can be advantageous.” In her presentation, Jessica tells how each person with autism has their own unique puzzle. She shared how she views things and reacts to things differently than other people. She has struggled with socializing. “I have a zany sense of humor and I used to use weird and abstract words or expressions to describe things,” she said.

“I want to share my life’s puzzle with my peers and anyone who will give me the opportunity to speak. I want them to learn about autism from someone who has it,” said Jessica. Her presentation lasted about 30 minutes but the information was interesting, creative, and visual. Jessica began her presentation with a definition of autism and its language derivative. “Autism comes from the Greek term “autos” meaning “self,” which

ultimately translates to “an isolated self”, she said. Facts and statistics wound through her presentation but Jessica always brought it back to herself and compared the information to her personal challenges and triumphs. It takes courage to get up in front of people and talk. Several students asked Jessica how she was able to do it. She said, “I’ve learned confidence and structure at ESBOCES. The teachers helped me to come out of my comfort

zone.” Jessica is also working on an art project for the Gold Award in her ESBOCES Art, Design, and Visual Communication Program. She is creating large puzzle pieces that will represent her struggle with autism. Puzzle pieces are used to represent the diversity of the people and families living with autism and the mystery and complexity of the autism spectrum.
