misuse. Flynn-Bisson said one of the first actions of the group was an Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Survey to evaluate student’s concerns, attitudes and knowledge about drinking and drug use, their experience with individuals who have been drinking, and their own experiences with alcohol and other drugs. A random

sample of Grant campus students were sent an email inviting them to participate in the survey that will be conducted three times over the next five years. The results of the survey will give the coalition a better understanding of current substance use issues and in turn will guide their prevention efforts.

Call for Artists The Art League of Long Island is thinking BIG with its juried exhibition aptly titled “The Big Picture,” set to take place May 26th to July 1st. Artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens are invited to submit applications to show their large works in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. The submission deadline is April 18th, 2018. For two-dimensional works: minimum size is 3 feet in height or width and the maximum size may not exceed 7 feet in any direction. If artwork is larger than 7 feet wide please call the Art League Gallery Coordinator to discuss. Threedimensional work may not exceed 7 feet high and may not exceed 100 lbs. Close your eyes and jump. As the saying goes... Shoot for the moon... Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Saving Lives While Solving Math

A Presence Unseen By: John McGowan

In the midst of my pain, I reached for something not there Yet I felt a presence previously unaware Faith had dwindled with each passing ache Yet I held on to the Spirit within me awake There is a fight each of us must endure Like floating through a wall and finding a cure What was it that carried me above the midst of my pain? Doubtless a Force, one hard to explain.

The Middle Country Central School District’s Jericho Elementary School students recently participated in the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon to help raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research while also assuring that families never receive a bill from St. Jude’s for treatment. Students in first through fifth grade were tasked with participating in numerous schoolwide, math-based events, completing math activities in their individual Funbooks and contributing to fundraising efforts.

This marks the fourth year that Jericho Elementary School has participated in the Math-AThon, raising over $21,000 over the course of four years and nearly $6,000 this year. The money raised covers chemotherapy treatments, oxygen for patients, platelet transfusions and groceries for families caring for St Jude’s patients. The money raised for St. Jude’s over the past 50 years has helped fund research for new treatments that has helped raise childhood cancer survival rates from 20 percent to more than 80 percent.

The District is thrilled to participate in an initiative that simultaneously increases students’ interest in math through a series of engaging activities while also teaching the importance of giving back to those in need. The Fashion Foundation A Unique Boutique with a Selﬂess Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does! February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the Academy Dental Assisting students recently taught the preschoolers in the Early Childhood Education Program the proper way to brush their teeth. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, with campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.

During a collaborative event, the dental students used a variety of toys and worksheets to demonstrate ideal brushing and flossing techniques to the youngsters. Toys included extra-large, inflatable molars; oversized toothbrushes; toy dental sets; and graphic worksheets. Next, preschoolers watched an animated video about healthy hygiene and then sat in the dental chairs for a free screening. Screenings

were performed by the dental assisting teacher and the former teacher (she now works in another capacity at the school), both of whom are registered dental hygienists. “This collaboration provided my students with handson interaction with pediatric patients and the opportunity to learn and assist in real-time as I performed screenings,” explained Dental Assisting Teacher Tierney Marzigliano.

Jon Falk, a fourth-grade teacher, and technology mentor at Coram Elementary School, was recently selected as a “Bright Light” by Suffolk ASSET (Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies) for his use of innovative technology in the classroom. Mr. Falk was honored, along with several educators from Suffolk County, at Suffolk ASSET’s annual Bright Lights’ Luncheon held at the Timber Point Country

Club on January 18th. Mr. Falk was recognized for his facilitation of the Districtwide technology integration project entitled, The Google Drive Collaborative. This year, the project will provide 1,000 second-, third- and fourth-grade students from all four elementary schools, with the opportunity to work together virtually. The project integrates multidisciplinary study, incorporating ELA, science and social studies with 21st Century technological

literacy and collaborative skills. Students were engaged with enriching, content-based materials according to their abilities and interests. “This award is a testament to the amazing things we all can do when we work together,” Mr. Falk said. “I am so grateful to work in a school district that supports and encourages teachers to collaborate and develop opportunities for all students.”

District Advocates On Saturday, February 3rd, thirty-four school districts gathered to advocate for public education at Longwood School District’s 14th Annual Legislative Breakfast, co-sponsored by Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services (ESBOCES). Moderated by Longwood’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan, the annual event provides district leaders with an opportunity to address state and federal representatives on critical topics facing public education. This year, the District was proud to welcome

Regent Roger Tilles who provided opening remarks to the more than 330 attendees. “I enjoy coming to back to Longwood for the students,” said Regent Tilles. “I know Longwood has done tremendously as a District.” After presentations by BOCES Chief Operating Officer Dr. Julie Lutz and New York State Council of School Superintendents Executive Director Dr. Charles Dedrick, students from Districts throughout Suffolk County asked questions of elected officials on topics including support for

student mental wellness, the increasingly diverse demographics across Long Island, unfunded mandates, the tax cap, and state aid allocation. “The increasing challenges districts face increases each and every year,” said Longwood Board Member and Legislative Committee Chair Dan Tomaszewski. “Our responsibility to educate children is constant as is our resolve to meet these challenges head-on. Today there is so much at stake, and now more than ever, we must speak with one voice to ensure the success of our students.”

ISLAND TRAVEL - The Ronkonkoma Middle School drama club recently put on a dazzling performance of “Once On This Island Jr.,” for three consecutive evenings beginning on February 8th. Exploring the Revolution Taking learning beyond the walls of the classroom, Karen Pitka’s fourth-grade class at Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently embarked on a “virtual field trip” hosted by Lauren Tarshis, author of the “I Survived” historical fiction series. The virtual field trip, “Beyond the Battlefield,” features a highly engaging video segment in which Tarshis takes both students

and teachers alike behind the scenes of the new American Revolution Museum in Philadelphia. Students were able to see historical treasures such as canteens and muskets, meet historians and hear stories of the young people who were a part of America’s fight for independence. “The goal of this virtual field trip was to help bring this highly important time in history to life for

Animal Artwork Colorful creations were plentiful at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as fifth-grade students created animal bobble heads as part of an art activity exploring ceramics. Utilizing ceramic clay, students in Susan Kinsey’s art class used their hands to sculpt cats and dogs for their bobble heads.

Students used toilet paper rolls as armatures to create the body of their animals and then shaped the animal’s heads from pinch pots, a molding technique achieved by pinching the thumb and forefinger to form a bowl-shaped mold. As part of the lesson in ceramics, students learned each step of the kiln firing process to produce finished ceramic sculptures.

Students began with the initial firing, called the bisque fire, before applying a glaze to their sculptures and placing them in the kiln for the final firing, known as the glaze fire. Throughout the building, each grade level is participating in a ceramics activity to encourage manual dexterity and support the creative process.

January Students of the Month The Middle Country Central School District announced its January students of the month at a recent Board of Education meeting. Centereach High School senior Josefine Nielsen, Newfield High School senior Syreneti DeLaCruz, Dawnwood Middle School eighth grade student Matthew Stein and Selden Middle School eighth grade student Megan Spina were all recognized for their continued academic successes, ongoing participation in extracurricular activities and the positive attitudes they spread through the halls of their respective schools. “On behalf of the Board of Education, faculty,

staff members and the entire Middle Country community, I want to congratulate these remarkable students for their achievements and for being true testaments of the immense educational opportunities offered here at the District,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “I look forward to witnessing the continued success of Matthew and Megan and the contributions that Josefine and Syreneti will make as they venture out in the world.” Centereach High School senior and January student of the month recipient Josefine Nielsen has challenged herself academically throughout her time in high school

- taking college level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses while maintaining an A average. Outside the classroom, Josefine is a consistent participant of extracurricular activities. Josefine is a member of National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, Thespian Honor Society, a participant of the Women’s Choir, and managing editor of the school newspaper. She also earned the lead role in three of the four Centereach drama productions and was a member of two of the high school’s musicals. Josefine will be pursuing a college degree next fall - as of now she is deciding between a number of acceptance letters - but plans to study theatre and public relations

wherever she decides. Syreneti DeLaCruz is a senior at Newfield High School who was selected as student of the month for her hard work and determination, earning her a weighted average of 96.85. Syreneti is set to graduate in June and has the potential to start her collegiate career having already accumulated 48 college credits due to her enrollment in 15 college level and AP courses. Her academic accolades were highlighted during her leading role in the Newfield Roverines first-place finish at last year’s New York State VEX Robotics Competition. Syreneti is a member of multiple clubs and has taken leadership positions

in several - serving as vice president of the National Technical Honor Society and secretary of the video club. Outside of school, she is a youth leader at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church and has led youth group activities such as fundraisers for the church and senior citizens. Syreneti has not decided on a college for next fall but plans to major in computer science or engineering. Dawnwood Middle School eighth grade student Matthew Stein was selected as the school’s student of the month. Matthew currently maintains a 98.85 and has earned high honor roll every quarter of his middle school career. He is also a participant in the

school band and jazz band. Matthew is often described as every teacher’s dream; he is insightful, determined and considerate of others. Megan Spina is an eighth grade student at Selden Middle School and was selected student of the month, earning high honor roll all three years of middle school. Megan is on the school’s soccer, volleyball, basketball and lacrosse teams and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Her favorite subject is math, but she shows enthusiasm and is an active participant in all of her classes. Megan’s teachers commend her for setting an example of how all students should behave.

They were able to take pictures in a photo cut out board to save as a memento of the afternoon. When the journals were completed, everyone retreated to the table for high tea. While most people are familiar with the traditional high tea, there is also low tea consisting of light snacks and tea, usually lounging on a comfortable chair or couch. Participants reveled taking a trip back in time. Librarians Janet Eagan

and Diane Haberstroh recreated a captivating time period of grace and sophistication, paying homage to the treasured novel and creating an exceptional celebration. For those who gave their time and talent; Joan Diener Palmer, Josephine Barranca, Christine Aiello, Dawn DiAngelo, Nancy Seims, those extra special touches were most welcome. In the end, Elizabeth accepts Mr. Darcy’s proposal. Elizabeth, as well as her sister Jane, marries. “Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.” We hope for all that attended, they remember the day with fondness and know that we welcome you each and every day, to celebrate the past, look forward to the future and make new memories.

Pride & Prejudice

Jane Austen’s beloved and timeless novel Pride and Prejudice was published on January 28th, 1813. Written during the Georgian Era, it is one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold. To mark the anniversary of this enduring literary

legacy, the Connetquot Public Library hosted Pride and Prejudice: Tea, Craft and Celebration on Thursday, January 25th. Incorporating the style and elegance of British society, Librarians Janet Eagan and Diane Haberstroh, attired in hand-made dresses, spent

weeks preparing for the special celebration. From the retro tea pots and serving trays to the elegantly scripted place cards and British-style tea sandwiches and sweets, no detail was left to chance. Imagining the lives of the Bennets and their circle of friends

and acquaintances, the exchange of pleasantries and polite small talk over tea. The reality of Mrs. Bennet anxious to marry off her five daughters, especially, Elizabeth, the eldest, the societal expectations of class and the authenticity of life and love. It is with great irony and humor this story comes to life becoming a timeless classic. Several adaptations of both novel and cinema have been endeavored. Librarian Janet Eagan showed film clips from three separate versions of the movie providing context and narration of each. Discussing not only the scene but the way in which each version offers its own interpretation. From Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth “I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand,” to her rejection of Darcy as “the last man

Super Bowl Party On Sunday, February 4th, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots took to the field in Super Bowl LII. The celebration, however, began on Saturday, February 3rd at the Connetquot Public Library. Excitement was in the air. In a show of team spirit, children wore team jerseys and shirts, prepared for the fun-filled festivities. Teen Librarian Angela Breslin and Children’s

Librarian Dina Oliveira led the young fans in a friendly football trivia challenge with the Eagles and Patriots in a close competition of knowledge and skill. Special Fundraiser Waverly Avenue Elementary School fifthgrade student Casey Lynch took an idea to fruition as he organized a fundraiser to raise money for a cause that hits close to home. Casey’s father, John Lynch, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and after successful treatment beat the disease. After approaching Waverly Principal John Ruggero with a written proposal, Casey put a plan into action to benefit the

Lustgarten Foundation’s research on pancreatic cancer. He contacted the Lustgarten Foundation, which provided purple bracelets for Casey to sell for $1 each to raise donations. Casey vigorously promoted the fundraiser by making a morning announcement, creating flyers to display around the building and encouraged his peers to help spread the word of the cause. Concluding the fundraiser, Casey and

his classmates were visited by the Lustgarten Foundation Vice President of Development Linda Gruskiewicz. Ms. Gruskiewicz spoke to the students about the significance of pancreatic cancer research and the difficulties associated with the diagnosis. Following the informational discussion, Casey presented the Lustgarten SPECIAL FUNDRAISER - Waverly Principal John Ruggero, Lustgarten Foundation Foundation with a check Vice President of Development Linda Gruskiewicz, Casey Lynch, John Lynch, Meghan for the funds he raised in Lynch, teachers Danielle Sexton and Kristina Fulcher.
