In recognition of Black History Month, Optimum, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel™, is sponsoring the Make Your Mark video contest for high school students. The contest provides an opportunity for students to reflect on how they can make a lasting “mark” by submitting a proposal and creating a video that documents their idea on how to incite positive change within their school and community. Students with the winning video will be awarded $2,500 for a school or community project.

As part of the contest, students will view the Smithsonian Channel documentary Breath of Freedom that details the experiences of AfricanAmerican GIs who helped rebuild Germany at the end of World War II and experienced equality for the first time overseas. Just as the soldiers featured in the documentary helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement, students can document their unique “mark” for positive change in their own video. The “Make Your Mark” contest is open to all high school students in

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers. Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format. “It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. David Wilkins, a high school student who stutters, narrates the DVD. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives. “We really try

to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Dr. Barry Guitar of the University of Vermont and Dr. Hugo Gregory of Northwestern University. The three experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced. More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering

Last week, with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in full swing, I made the realization that, much like those athletes, we are all destined for something. Whether it is a Gold Medal or last place, we are all put on this Earth for some reason. We may not always come out on top, but it is crucial to acknowledge that everything happens for a reason. This same idea can be applied to our everyday lives. Although we may not be Olympians, we are crusaders in our own right. Each day, we are training ourselves to excel much like Shaun White and Shani Davis; we are trying to attain perfection.

There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal. When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores. With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our

everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals. I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics. Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason. Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

Mind Matters The annual Mind Matters Dinner Dance, hosted by the Mental Health Association in Suffolk, in partnership with Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans was held on January 30th at the picturesque Old Field Club in East Setauket. A packed hall of attendees gathered to mingle, enjoy a gourmet dinner and dance the night away to live jazz performed by the New York City Police Department Jazz Band. Event honorees Sonia Murdock, Executive Director of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York; and Thomas Ronayne, Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency gave passionate speeches to business executives and non-profit leaders, friends, family, and politicians on the healthcare strengths and needs of people living on Long Island, New York. Sonia Murdock, an international advocate and educator on mental health related to childbearing, eloquently spoke about the gap in education, treatment and support services regarding postpartum depression/psychosis as well as the support and resources available to mothers and families who are experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, to include postpartum depression. Thomas Ronayne spoke about the need for advocacy

and casework services for our Veterans, to include housing, career assistance, and academic opportunities. As administrator of the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program, Mr. Ronayne spoke on the prevalence of post traumatic stress disorder and the tragic rate of

United Nations Multinational Peace Keeping Forces and anti submarine warfare operations around the world. The Mental Health Association in Suffolk is an advocacy organization devoted to improving the mental health of the community through education, workforce training, and information and referral services. MHAS is a local chapter of a statewide and national and network association of local MHAs. Its mission is: “To promote mental wellness by means of support services, education and advocacy.” MHAS is in the process of a full merger with Suffolk County United Veterans and Clubhouse of Suffolk. Winter Survival Tips Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies. If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive.

Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold, your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure. Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Abandon your car only as a last resort. A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle. Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow you to run the engine for heat for a longer time. Pack A Winter Survival Kit: The kit should

contain non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/ strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink). Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air. Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to

prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping Moving: At least once an hour, vigorously move your arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will reduce your ability to stay warm. Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to avoid dehydration. Don’t

put snow in your mouth as a source of liquid, always melt it first. “Eating” snow will lower your body temperature, increasing your risk of hypothermia. Make Your Vehicle Easy To Find: Tie a piece of brightly colored cloth or plastic to your antenna or hang it out of a window. When running the engine at night, turn on interior lights if you hear rescuers nearby. Rescuers can see a small glow at a considerable distance. To reduce battery drain, use emergency flashers only if you hear approaching vehicles. If the snow has stopped falling, open the hood of the car as a

A Scout Is Reverent The Trailblazer District scouts and their volunteer scouting leaders participated in the annual “A Scout Is Reverent Week,” in recognition of the anniversary of Boy Scouts of America and the 12th point of the Scout Law, during the second week in February. The youths attended and took part in leading services at all of the houses of worship both in the host Churches and Temples as well as at their local places of worship (some of which are the Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Explorer Post’s sponsoring organization). Cub Scouts from local Cub Scout Packs with the assistance of their parents, leaders and Chaplain recently completed the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Catholic Scout Religious Emblems along with God and Me and God and Family Religious

Emblem programs. These courses consist of activities and Bible studies designed to help the Scout become more aware of God’s presence in his daily life, especially within the home and community. By completing the requirements, the Scout has strengthened their spiritual growth and religious knowledge. Presentations of the Catholic Cub Scout Religious Emblems were made during the Celebration of the Mass at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church at Scout Sunday services. Said St. Joseph’s Scout Sunday Coordinator Mary Scotti, “Scouting For 104 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Scouting has brought families and communities together for 100 years to prepare America’s

youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week.” At St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church (Ronkonkoma) Boy Scout Colin Kwasnik of Troop 272 (Ronkonkoma) and Cub Scout R.J. Dellasalle and Robbie Kohlmann of Cub Scout Pack 272 (Ronkonkoma) were Altar Servers. Mary Scotti, during the presentation of the Cub Scout Religious Emblems, gave the explanation of the medals and read each of the Cub Scout’s names for the Parvuli Dei recipients, and distributed by Rev. Mike T. Maffeo.

Honoree Selected The Women for Brookhaven have named Maureen Mennella, a resident of Bay Shore, as the honoree for the 20th Anniversary event. The celebration will be held on Thursday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the West Lake Inn, Patchogue. Maureen Mennella, a 28 year veteran in the banking industry, is currently the Market Manager at People’s United Bank (PUB) in Bayport, managing six PUB branches in Suffolk County. Maureen is the PresidentElect and Treasurer of the Patchogue Rotary Club. She was recently awarded Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, for her outstanding contributions

to the community. She is on the Board of Directors for the Victim Information Bureau of Suffolk County. As a volunteer for the Blue Point Salvation Army, she teaches financial literacy and advocates for their Angel Tree Program. She is also working with the Bayport Blue Point and Patchogue Medford School Districts, mentoring students in their Job Shadow and Career Day programs. In 2007, Maureen joined the Advisory Council for the Medical Center. She has twice co-chaired the “Women for Brookhaven” event, and has served on the Hospital Ball committee for the past seven years. She has also been a member of the Black

Tie and Tournament of Tournaments committees. “Maureen exemplifies commitment to the community in so many ways. Slocum Elementary School students recently participated in a Reading Is Magic themed assembly with professional magician Robert “Magic Bob” McEntee. During the interactive assembly session, Magic Bob used illusions, captivating magic, audience participation, comedy, storytelling and music to illustrate that reading is fun. As part of the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program, the event was designed to encourage parents to read to their children for at least 15 minutes daily in order to help them improve their overall academic performance.

Varsity Coach Named On Tuesday, January 7th, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students and staff welcomed Suffolk County Police Officer Elisa McVeigh for an important visit. Bosti Principal, Dr. Gail Cholden, and 5th grade teacher Ms. Whitson, had invited Officer McVeigh to talk to students about the dangers of substance abuse, and sound decision making. As part of Suffolk’s

Police Smart program Officer McVeigh provides age-appropriate information to students, from kindergarten to 8th grade, on topics such as stranger safety, bullying, internet safety and making sound decisions. Using a video, and extensive Q&A, McVeigh gave advice to the students about how to avoid dangerous substances and the importance of making informed decisions.

youngsters went out of their way to be helpful to one of their classmates. Their kindness, and consideration gave Alex the confidence he needed to take part in the annual Circus Show! Their selfless acts of consideration earned them a special ‘Dignity’ Award from Mrs. Wilson, and a letter of commendation, a copy of which has been sent to compassionate entertainer Ellen DeGeneres! Islip Town Board members continued the Town’s long-standing tradition of observing National Black History Month at a recent Black History celebration held in the Islip Town Board meeting room, where board members paid special tribute to five individuals, who either live or work in Islip Town, who have made great strides in

the advancement of African Americans. The ceremony was led by Councilman Anthony J. Senft, Jr., who was joined by fellow board members in acknowledging the many achievements of each honoree. From professional musicians to dedicated educators to outstanding athletic leaders, this year’s honorees were all deserving of the prestigious

award, and were presented with a customary crystal statue to celebrate their accomplishments. Honored were: Reynard Burns for his contributions in the area of arts and education; Lisette Lors for Education; Mike Brown for Education; Judith JacksonFogah for Community Service; and Horace J. Mickle for Community Service.

Blood is especially important for people with leukemia, other forms of cancer, and of course for trauma victims. With a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished. Three factors are combining together to prompt NYBC’s emergency declaration: 1. Many blood drives have been cancelled

because of accumulated or predicted snowfall. 2. Many donors haven’t been able to make scheduled donation appointments due to the weather. 3. Hospital demand for blood types – notably O-negative, the universal blood type because of its usefulness in trauma situations – remains high. If you cannot donate but

still wish to participate in bringing crucial blood products to patients in need, please ask someone to donate for you, or consider volunteering at a local blood drive. NYBC also offers special community service scholarships for students who organize community blood drives during summer months. Any company, community organization,

In the midst of an unprecedented string of winter storms, New York Blood Center is urgently asking donors to roll up their sleeves to replenish the community blood and platelet supply. Dozens of blood drives have been canceled because of bad weather. Blood drives that are continuing have experienced greatly reduced attendance, while operations at NYBC’s many walk-in donor centers are similarly affected. “I urge residents to donate to this vital cause,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “So many people depend on donations to survive serious illnesses or accidents.
