Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Suffolk County Senior Citizen Advisory Board jointly announced that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year Award. The award recognizes a senior citizen who has significantly contributed to other seniors and residents in a meaningful and important way – either as an advocate, role model, leader or volunteer. This impact can be felt either countywide or in one of Suffolk County’s local communities. “I encourage our residents to take the opportunity to nominate a senior they know that has made a difference throughout our region,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Senior of the Year is a special

Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

lineups by St. Raphael CYO board members, to give the players a taste of their own “MSG basketball experience.” The national anthem is also sung live by local students and volunteers before each game. Finally, Championship Sunday (February 26th) is a hoops extravaganza that features the five headto-head title games to crown the winners in each bracket. A record 400 participants and 40 teams will participate to vie for first and second place trophies in each division. In addition, each player on all participating teams receives a commemorative t-shirt from this year’s tournament. Raffle prizes, concessions and contests for kids attending the tournament are also a unique feature of the tournament for each and every game. For the youth basketball purist it is a well organized, fun-filled competitive tournament atmosphere you won’t want to miss. The gymnasium is also handicap accessible. Recycling Collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island and the second time it has been cosponsored by the Ethical Society. Huntington resident Kathy WilliamsGing was the first to suggest a bicycle collection to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. She learned of Pedals for Progress from a friend in New Jersey. Kathy says:” I lived in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in 1971 and 1972 without a vehicle. I learned first hand what it was like to depend on public transportation all of the time. Having a bicycle makes life easier in many ways: getting to work or school, going to the market or reaching the clinic.” Since beginning this collection, RPCV of LI has collected 1294 bicycles and 100 sewing machines. Floral Park’s Alison Pratt, who is the coordinator of the drive at the Ethical Society in Garden City, says the collection is an expression of the values of the Ethical Society to do what we can to help people to live their best lives. “Donating a used bike or idle sewing machine is an easy way to make a huge difference in the life of

someone who doesn’t have the resources we do,” she says. Pedals for Progress collects bicycles and sewing machines annually and transfers this material wealth to those more needy. To date, more than 149,000 bicycles and 3,500 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. In these countries the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults. These bikes provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting product to market and accessing health care and other services. Sewing machine shipments help initiate educational programs and generate income opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach for many people. Steady employment for adults is vital to the development and success of struggling communities. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island, in partnership with the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, is collecting used bicycles and sewing machines on Saturday, April 1st (rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Ethical Society, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower). Items collected will be refurbished by the international project Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace and sent to developing communities overseas. Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles. It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $10 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. Winter Break Programs Learning about nature through fun events is on the Winter Break menu at Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Center this month with two great programs. First there’s Morning of Nature: Music and Storytelling for kids ages 3 to 5 from February 20th and 21st, 10 to 11:30 a.m., with Johnny (“Mr. C”) Cuomo who will include singing, dancing, creating and moving to music followed by storytelling. This program is geared toward children of all abilities

with their caregivers as well as those children with special needs. Johnny is local teacher, musician and naturalist who specializes in programming for children in early childhood through young adulthood. TREE CAMPUS USA - The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus in Riverhead as a 2016 Tree Campus USA, a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. The Eastern Campus is situated on 192 acres in the Pine Barrens of eastern Long Island.

Funding Awarded Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that 23 Suffolk County cultural and arts organizations were selected to received $768,890 in grants by the New York State Council on the Arts. The state program supports the creation of visual, performing, literary and media arts, as well as arts education, economic development through the arts, and cultural programs for underserved populations. “I would like to thank Governor Cuomo, the New York State Legislature and the New York State Council on the Arts for their continuous commitment to expand the arts in Suffolk County and throughout the state,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Through these efforts, this funding will help local organizations across the county bring performing arts programs to our communities and visual, literary and media artists to our region for the public to enjoy. Many of our residents and families will benefit from this

funding.” In total, Governor Cuomo awarded more than $1 million in cultural arts funding to Long Island. Students in the Audio Production program at Wilson Tech Dix Hills Campus recently enjoyed an opportunity to see their future in the field by visiting a working radio station and learning more about college educational opportunities. Marc Oppenheim, Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, hosted the tour of the School of Communication for the Wilson Tech students and their instructors, Michael O’Toole and Lori Spano, and counselor Valerie Lambert. They were joined

by Juliana Spano, Lori’s daughter, who is currently attending Hofstra. The tour included a look at media classrooms and new facilities in the School of Communication. A highlight of the visit was a close-up look at WHRU, the campus radio station. Station Director John Mullen provided insight into how the station operated, what career opportunities there are in the broadcasting field and information about Hofstra’s programs. After the radio station visit, the Wilson Tech

students toured the campus, had lunch in a dining hall and gained a sense of everyday activity on the college’s campus. Wilson Tech, a program of Western Suffolk BOCES, offers more than 30 career and technical education programs to high school juniors and seniors at its four campuses. Ninety-four percent (94%) of students who completed their Wilson Tech programs in 2015 reported they were attending college, active in the military or employed.

Deadline Soon The Long Island Horticultural Society’s (LIHS) scholarship application deadline is approaching. Each year, the LIHS offers scholarships to Long Island

Music and Memory On Friday, January 20th, the Connetquot Public Library launched a new library service entitled Music and Memory. This service connects music with long-term memory. Created as a non-profit in 2010, the organization offers training in the creation of personal playlists on an iPod for those who struggle with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive challenges. Librarian Jeanna Matias has trained to create these playlists. Music has extraordinary

power and can help breathe life into those with impaired memories. From Broadway to big bands, blues to jazz, R & B to rock and roll, classical to country and so much more, music evokes memories and ignites the soul. To find solace in reconnecting to the past while in the present, to be in the moment, animated and alive. Personalized playlists offer individuals the opportunity to reconnect to past memories and provide a source of comfort. IPod

Duffield Elementary the after-school “Bedtime School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently treated to a fun and informative exploration into “space” as they ventured into a giant inflatable Star Lab planetarium. Student of the Month On January 30th, Councilmember Kevin LaValle visited Newfield High School to honor January Student of the Month Amani Hosein. In addition to being a strong student

academically, Amani participates in many extracurricular activities, including chief editor of the school newspaper, National Honor Society, art honor society, student government and more.

She is working towards attending SUNY Stony Brook next year to study social work and law and was recently nominated by the principal of Newfield High School for the Suffolk County Principal’s Award.

Regional Honors In its first year, Connetquot High School’s Science Olympiad Team took home multiple awards during the 2017 Division C Science Olympiad Regional Competition on January 28th. Throughout the contest, students competed against 50 teams from across the region as they showcased their knowledge of complex

science material in a series of hands-on events and written exams. In addition to the team’s 19th-place finish, several students earned individual and team honors. The district proudly congratulates all team members and the following students for their placement awards: Joe Lasso and Anthony

Shopping Smart

As part of their math studies, fifth-grade students in Kristine Abbinanti’s class at Cherokee Street Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently took the initiative to learn how to shop in a smart and socially conscious manner. “My class and I worked on a ‘Smart Shopping’ unit, in which I gave them $25 at the beginning of

the year as seed money for the project,” said Mrs. Abbinanti. “Every Friday, we reviewed sales circulars from several local stores and then searched for coupons online while students maintained a spreadsheet to keep track of our spending along the way.” By utilizing their newly garnished “Smart Shopping” skills, students

were able to purchase close to $250 worth of goods without coming close to the actual price. As part of their lesson, the students selected and bought practical items such as cereal, canned foods and paper goods, which will be donated to a local pantry for community members in need.

Healthier Long Island More than 100 representatives from public schools and community groups took part in the fifth annual Healthier Long Island Challenge conference at Western Suffolk BOCES December 8th, which focused on fostering a culture of wellness in schools. Collaborating on the event were Western Suffolk BOCES Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program, Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK), Adelphi University, Alliance for a Healthier Generation,

American Dairy Association North East and SPORTIME. The conference featured expert speakers in health and early education. Presenters and presentation topics included: Lisa Perry, National Advisor, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, “Creating and Communicating a Culture of Smart Snacking, Active Students, Staff and Families;” Dr. Dana Friedman, Deputy Commissioner, Suffolk County Dept. of Social Services, “Making the Connection between

Health, Early Learning and School Readiness;” and Dr. Paul Rukavina, Associate Professor, Adelphi University, “Fostering a Culture of ‘Movers.’” Angelique Johnson-Dingle, Western Suffolk BOCES District Superintendent, welcomed attendees and New York State Assemblywoman Kim Jean-Pierre delivered opening remarks. In addition to the featured speakers, three Ted Talk-style presentations offered strategies, tools and best practices to assist

schools with nutrition and school gardening, active living, wellness resources and funding. Numerous organizations displayed information and resources about their programs and how they could support wellness in schools and communities. “We were very pleased with the attendees’ positive evaluations and willingness to implement strategies that encourage physical activity and healthier snacking in their respective settings,” said Karyn Kirschbaum, Ph.D., Western Suffolk BOCES School Health

Policy Specialist. “By strengthening school and community partnerships, schools can achieve greater health and academic outcomes among students.” Creating Healthy Schools and Communities is a public health initiative to reduce major risk factors of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases in 85 high-need school districts and associated communities statewide. This program is funded by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to implement

multicomponent evidence-based policies, place-based strategies, and promising practices to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity for all New Yorkers. Western Suffolk BOCES Student Support Services Center (SSSC) is one of the 25 grantees and is collaborating with Sustainable Long Island and Stony Brook Medicine on this initiative.
