The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! See the results from those who have participated:

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

Take Your Child to the Library Day is celebrated the first Saturday in February. The goal is to generate public awareness of a library’s valuable resources to its community. The library is an essential educational resource for members offering classes, events, and programs for all ages. On Saturday, February 1, the Connetquot Public Library celebrated in a big way. Families were welcomed with lively music to set a festive mood. Children’s books adorned the table, allowing families to take a moment or two, to pick out a favorite. Program flyers and information were available to help families learn about upcoming
events, but there was much more. Children had their picture taken in front of the green screen with the children’s play area as a backdrop. They enjoyed watching themselves on the screen pretending to play instruments or displaying their balloon creations. Balloon artist Derek Muterspaw, Mr. Poppintwist, entertained the children and created imaginative designs for them to take home. The children enjoyed spending time at the craft table with family and friends and of course, the Library Scavenger Hunt offered a fun and exciting challenge. Each task was designed to familiarize children with the library, from discovering the
location of a book to finding a program they’d like to attend. While there were raffles and prizes, the greatest rewards of visiting the library are measured in smiles and delight. Children’s librarian Cecile Mazza, dressed as Cat in the Hat from Dr. Seuss, along with Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira, hosted this firsttime event which educated and entertained all who attended. We thank the teen volunteers for their time and assistance. For the youngest patrons who find it hard to leave and the parents who welcome us into their lives, we thank you for taking your child to your library every day.

One of his newer team members, Stephen, brings over 20 years of restaurant experience and they are both excited to see what new ideas he comes up with. Marino’s also has a great selection of cold cuts and specialty sandwiches. Every year on the first day of school, Marino and Son’s offers a very special treat. They offer a free lunch to the
many moms getting back into the swing of things. Just stop in and get a sandwich. And although it is unofficially dedicated to the moms, he welcomes the dads as well. John and his son are also happy to do a special and free Mother’s Day lunch as well. More than the quality of their products and fair prices, Marino’s is truly known for their customer service. As John was sure to highlight the specific talents of many, he mentioned Tony, Chris and Rob, who he considers experts in customer service.
You could really see and hear John’s appreciation for every member of his staff, which is probably why there is something very special about their connection with the customers in what could be seen as a very simple transaction. was named student of the month for her willingness to give back to the school community, drive to move forward, and academic excellence. With a weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 97.24, Nicole plans to major in Mathematics while she attends college in the fall. She will likely start her fall semester as a sophomore given the number of college credits she will have already earned at the end of her senior year. Nicole serves as G.O. Historian and is an active member of the girls varsity leaders club, women’s choir, National Honor Society and varsity tennis
team. Outside of school, Nicole is a foster parent for animals through Last Chance Animal Rescue and an active donator for the Wounded Warrior Project of which she received the Marine Corps Certificate of Appreciation. Nicole is described by teachers as a good-natured person who goes out of her way to help those around her. She has presented herself as a leader to underclassmen and fellow seniors by conducting herself professionally and with grace. Her insight and generosity to those around her has been a tremendous asset to Newfield High
School and the Middle Country community. Centereach High School’s senior, Tyler Padron, was recognized for his compassion, kindness and spirit. His unique ability to continuously search for the silver lining of every situation has emitted waves of positivity throughout the building. Tyler—a dedicated worker—strives to help those around him by encouraging his peers to branch out and try new things. Tyler is described by his teachers as an individual who is always willing to go the extra mile. Come the fall, Tyler will
be pursuing a liberal arts degree at Suffolk County Community College and plans to transfer to SUNY Farmingdale where he will study communications. He aspires to become a sports radio show host for ESPN. Dawnwood Middle School’s eighth grade student Michael Cosmo was selected as student of the month in recognition of his self-motivation and work ethic. With an overall average of 99.63, Michael sets an example of excellence and good citizenship by consistently providing a helping hand to his peers. In each classroom, Michael is
an active participant in discussions and activities. Thoughtful, kind and quick-witted, Michael is dedicated to pursuing his education and can often be found reaching for a book after completing his classwork. Isabella Muccio, sixth grade student at Selden Middle School, was named Student of the Month because of her academic vigor and positive attitude that shines throughout the building. Isabella has maintained a cumulative GPA of 98.3 and is an active member of the school community. This includes student government, the Environmental/ Plant Club and Youth for Humanity Club. Isabella will be presenting data from a recent field trip at the Brookhaven National Laboratory later this year. Outside the classroom, Isabella is involved with lacrosse, dance, and Girl Scouts. She recently earned the Girl Scouts’ Bronze Award for her participation at a local soup kitchen.
Sachem Students Explore New York City Historic Locations Prior to the winter recess, Sachem High School students in Kristen Cannetti’s College Marketing class and Keith McCaffrey’s Hospitality and Tourism class took a daylong trip exploring several notable locations in New York City. The trip began at Macy’s Herald Square location where students learned how America’s largest store has grown over the last 150 years and how its four-year, $400 million renovation improved the retailer’s
already established infrastructure. Led by a tour guide, students learned about the history of Macy’s, retailing approaches, special events and holiday traditions while exploring each department and floor on the famous wooden escalators. Students then traveled uptown to Radio City Music Hall for a specialized tour where they examined the interior design of the famous venue. Highlights of the tour
included interior design of the magnificent grand foyer, the massive 1.8 million-cubic-foot auditorium, original aluminum statues, eight elegant lounges, the impeccable Roxy Suite, and the lighting booth and projection room. The in-depth tour concluded with a stop in the Rockettes dressing room and a meetand-greet with one of the Rockettes right before she went on to star in the “Christmas Spectacular” show.
