From February 9th through February 20th, two of New York City’s favorite casual restaurants, Café Metro and Fresh & Co., will donate a percentage of their sales to Friends of Karen, a tri-state organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families living in the New York tri-state area. The organization has helped more than 13,500 children since its founding in 1978. Café Metro (8 locations throughout New York City) and Fresh & Co. Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

CELEBRATING DR. KING - Connetquot Central School District Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently hosted the 4th annual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by learning about the goals, sacrifices and achievements of Dr. King in the classroom. Students in the Sycamore Chorus performed inspirational songs, performed skits and read stories surrounding the theme “Be the change you want to see in the world.” The assembly emphasized the importance of community service and encouraged personal responsibility for building a peaceful, caring and just world.

The Art League of Long Island welcomes Nikki Girgenti to lead its newly re-vamped Teen Portfolio Prep Summer Program. Now in its 20th year, the Art League’s highly regarded program will continue to deliver the excellent programming it is well-known for, while offering a new approach to help teens create the perfect art portfolio. The Summer Portfolio Prep Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. The portfolio program is geared toward supporting students as they strive to set themselves apart as artists: whether they are applying to a Bachelor of Fine Arts program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to expand their body of work as they prepare for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate art courses in high school. In two three-week sessions students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. Students may enroll in one or both sessions of the program. Two sessions are recommended to get the maximum benefit of the program. A breadth of subject matter and

techniques will be covered during each session. Observational studies such as still life, figure drawing, portraiture; Mixed media, Watercolors, Acrylic, Printmaking, Digital Photography, Landscapes, Book Arts, Found Object Art, Sculpture, and alternative techniques are all possible subject matter. This program will also provide other unique experiences and instruction such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. Teens will benefit from high level instruction in a professional studio setting while enabling them to develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists. Program participants will enjoy an environment that fosters creative thinking and individuality while exploring traditional and more alternative methods of art making. The program will provide group and individualized instruction and advisement, fostering the development of artworks that are unique and meaningful to the students, bringing out their own personal voice and style. memorable experience for any aspiring young artist! Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Teen Portfolio Prep Program. Since the beginning of the year, widespread flu and inclement winter weather in some parts of the country have prevented many regular donors from making or keeping their blood donation appointments. Healthy and diverse blood donors are

needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Diversity among blood donors is important because red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and certain blood types are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. Blood must be matched very closely for those patients with rare blood types or for those who need repeated transfusions. Patients

are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. All blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. Connetquot High School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach JoAnn Woodruff and a friendly home crowd looked forward to recognizing this year’s seniors on January 30th. The brightly decorated home gym welcomed the excited crowd of family members, students, community fans, and the visitors from Central Islip HS. The celebration was further amplified by the team’s convincing 40-31

win over the visitors. Seniors Emily Austin, Katie Foley, Sara Walsh and Anna Agnes were introduced before the game and presented with gifts by Coach Woodruff. Proud family members joined them at mid-court for hugs and flowers as the girls would play their last home game as Connetquot Thunderbirds. Junior, Alyssa Torres led the scorers from both teams with 24 points and 5

rebounds. Katie Foley and Brittany Curtin chipped in with 5 and 4 points respectively. Connetquot came back from a 2 point halftime deficit to outscore the visitors 31-18 in the second half. Congratulations to the Connetquot Thunderbirds on their most recent win, and a sincere thank you to this year’s basketball seniors.

Strong Effort First year Connetquot H.S. boy’s basketball coach Kyle Black was looking forward to the rematch with league rival Walt Whitman H.S. on Tuesday, January 27th, but the Blizzard of 2015 forced the game to be rescheduled. The game was played on Saturday, January 31st to a eager crowd, hoping for an excited performance by the Connetquot Thunderbirds! While the players, coaches and fans did get to see an exciting game,

it was the Whitman ‘Wildcats’ that came away with a 50-47 victory. In a contest that saw a dozen lead changes throughout the game, the final score would be determined by two free throws with 3 seconds left by Whitman’s Jordan Aiken. Despite a last second three point attempt by Connetquot, the final score was to Whitman’s advantage. Both teams are still in the running for a playoff spot, but need to win the

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before

paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters,

including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and

newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information
