Grant Program Call for Entries WHAT: TangerKIDS Grant Program, an initiative designed to award grant money to schools within the communities of Tanger Outlet Centers nationwide, has officially opened its call for entries within the Deer Park, NY community. The TangerKIDS Grant Program was designed to satisfy the specific funding needs of local schools – from the implementation

Left to right now has a different angle; nothing is straight anymore, and we’re caught in the middle of what is and what was, and the way our children are now being taught. We can’t fly with just one single wing; we need the left and right to make it safe and sound. Without both wings holding together, I’m afraid we’ll never leave the ground. Blindness, dark and dreary days now; rosy glasses won’t help us see the light. If we don’t stop this madness now, then it will be too late to set things right. Left to right once seemed so easy; up and down and circles, freaking out. God, we need some help here, we forgot what life is all about.

Suffolk County Community College will offer courses at Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard base, home of the 106th Rescue Wing, located in Westhampton Beach this spring. A first for the 106th Rescue Wing and the college. Suffolk County Community College will offer two courses this spring that will enable Air National Guard members to gain credits towards an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). The CCAF degree is mandatory for higher level promotions. Psychology 101 begins on February 1 and English 101 follows on February 6th. The 106th Rescue Wing Command Chief, Michael T. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we
see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken
them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

Riding for the sixth year, the Marty Lyons Foundation is calling for 60 cyclists to participate as a team in the Annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 6th, 2018. This, America’s largest cycling event, is celebrating its 41st year, and is presented by REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.). There are 32,000 riders expected to pedal the 40-mile, oneday scenic tour through the five boroughs of New York City on car free roads. Sixty cyclists will be riding for the benefit of the Marty Lyons Foundation with a goal of raising $200,000 toward the mission of granting wishes to children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. As a Charity Rider, each member of the MLF Team will be in the first wave of riders that morning and
will also receive a Rider I.D. Kit which includes a helmet cover, bib and bike plate; access to free bike repair along the route and a support and gear vehicle; a Marty Lyons Foundation jersey (if registered by February 10th); snacks and refreshments at four rest areas; entry to Finish Festival at Fort Wadsworth and more. The Tour, co-produced by Bike New York and the New York City Department of Transportation, provides participants the unique and fun experience to bike on a 40-mile journey through New York City. “Because the route is doable for cyclists of almost all levels,” says Marty, “I encourage anyone looking for a great time to join our team in support of our children.” The Marty Lyons
Foundation grants wishes to children, ages 3 through 17 years old, who have been diagnosed with a terminal or a life-threatening illness. Founded in 1982 by football great Marty Lyons, the Foundation has granted wishes to over 7,400 boys and girls, many of whom reside in the tristate area. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

Taking Home Trophies The Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School “Roverines” robotics team recently continued its extraordinarily successful year with another first place tournament trophy at a regional VEX Robotics competition. The competition, hosted at Adelphi University, brought together student teams from high schools in Westchester, New York City and Long Island. “The entire District is incredibly proud of our
various techniques, which included the following: · Reading and following a detailed schematic of the grill that featured drawings from three different angles – top, front, and one side. · Calculating the total dimensions given limited information to ensure math skills are on par. · Utilizing proper cutting, bending, and welding proficiency when fabricating steel of varying thicknesses, and different materials if using them for accent pieces. Each student’s steel grill box and lid were essentially identical (12” wide, 8” deep, 10” high), but they had creative license on
how to design the legs, the handle, and if they wanted to add a vent or additional accents. Students had approximately four weeks to complete the assignment. The project was finalized one recent afternoon when the class fired up their grills to roast hotdogs and hamburgers. “Making something useful, yet complex, which everyone can take home and share with their families was the highlight of the semester,” said Akers. “This type of project-based learning provides necessary handson lessons and keeps enthusiasm levels high.”

Dining on Good Books Helen B. Duffield Elementary School’s library was recently transformed into Café Duffield for the first “Book Tasting” event held on January 26th, as Karen Pitka’s fourth-graders were invited to “taste” six genres, including science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy and mystery.
Each table offered a three-minute “taste,” or sampling, of a book of the student’s choice. After reading their selected work, the students logged a brief menu summary including what the author did to hook the reader and if the student would recommend this particular piece of literature to others.
Students then discussed their selection with the rest of the “customers” at their genre table. Before returning to their classroom, the readers picked up a bookmark, making note of their top three favorite choices throughout selection of books.

Everyone loves to grill. That’s why John Akers, welding teacher at Edward J. Milliken Technical Center, had his students build personalsized, charcoal grills for their midterm project. This exercise incorporated all the skills students learned during the year up until this point. The welding program is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. To execute this multifaceted project, students had to demonstrate mastery of
Roverines as they continue the incredible streak of thoughtful and innovative performances at robotics competitions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “Their success is a testament to a District - and a community - that provides students opportunities to engage in STEM inside the classroom and through multiple extracurricular programs.” The Roverines also came in first place in the competition’s skills challenge. Talking Safety Kindergarten students talked about safety at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District during a recent injury prevention program provided by the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Through the workshop, each kindergarten class was visited by two Stony Brook nurses, Kristi Ladowski and Christine Pfundstein, who shared important tips to stay safe and avoid
injury. Students learned about the importance of correctly wearing a seatbelt when riding in a car and a helmet when riding a bicycle. Using two eggs, one with a protective case around it representing a helmet and one without, the students saw how easily the unprotected egg cracked and the protected egg remained safe. Additionally, each class participated in a teddy bear clinic where students suited up as a
doctor and performed patient care on one of their own stuffed animals. Dressed in protective hair nets, face masks and rubber gloves, students began by assessing the condition of their patient, identifying injuries and making recommendations on how to stay safe next time. Completing the teddy bear clinic, the student-caregivers applied bandages and splints to their injured fluffy friends.
Floating to Conclusions Ronkonkoma Middle School eighth-grade students enrolled in Anthony Carbonaro and Alma Campanelli’s math, science and technology courses tested their creativity and engineering skills during a recent regatta boat race on January 25th at
Connetquot High School. As part of a lesson on buoyancy, the young engineers spent weeks using scientific calculations to design and construct boats out of cardboard and duct tape in hopes of crossing the high school pool. Although some students chose to
commandeer their boats in an individual fashion, they all worked in teams when creating their boats in class. Despite the fact that not every boat was able to stay afloat during the race, the students enjoyed cheering one another to see which boat would make it across.

Capstone Kickoff The Middle Country Central School District’s Hawkins Path Elementary School recently hosted a kick-off party for its fifth grade students as they begin their capstone research projects. Hawkins Path’s teachers and administrators developed 12 unique, interactive stations in which students explored and began to develop subject area ideas for their individual
research projects. The exploratory process consisted of multiple stations, including sensory stations, historical documents, physical challenges, music from around the world, a mystery box and many more. Providing a range of stations allowed students to ask challenging questions and determine the topics of which they were eager to further explore.
The District is encouraged to witness the educational trajectory these fifth grade students have taken during their elementary school experiences, and the District is looking forward to the completion of their capstone research projects as students prepare for a new beginning in middle school.
Student Makes a Difference An advocate for community safety, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School third-grader Braden Zuccaro recently worked to improve traffic safety in his neighborhood by contacting Peter Kletchka, project supervisor for the Islip Town Department of Public Works. As a result of this
outreach, Mr. Kletchka visited the school in the Connetquot Central School District on January 22nd and spoke to Braden and his classmates about the process he takes into addressing citizens’ safety concerns. He also thanked Braden for his thoughtful letter, and assured him that additional representatives of the Town of Islip will
visit the area of concern to see what remedies can be introduced to satisfy Braden’s safety concerns. “You are never too young to have your concerns heard, and to make a difference,” said Sycamore School Youth and Family Services Coordinator Robyn Hoffmann.

Fifth-grade students in Colleen Malone’s and Joanna Zalewski’s classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed Jeremy Dale, an impressive and inspirational young man, to talk to the students and staff members about the best-selling novel, “Wonder,” and his own life living with a craniofacial deformity. “Wonder,” which was recently adapted into a movie, tells the story of a boy with a severe facial
deformity, who faces challenges as he begins to attend regular school as a fifth-grader. “Like the main character in the book, Jeremy was born with facial differences,” said Mrs. Malone. “He and his mom shared his experiences about his many surgeries along with other details about his life. The students were particularly excited to hear that Jeremy had been invited to be on the set during the filming of ‘Wonder,’ and that he had the opportunity to meet
many of the actors at the premier screening in Los Angeles.” Before concluding his visit, Jeremy also spent time answering students’ questions about his life, the book “Wonder,” and his thoughts on the movie. At the end of the visit, Jeremy presented the students with Wonderthemed bookmarks. The students came away from this experience impressed by Jeremy’s resilience, enthusiasm and positive attitude.
Applications Available Longwood School District participates in the grant-funded New York State Universal PreKindergarten Program. All children who will be four years old on or before December 1st, 2018, are eligible to apply for the program. Applications will be mailed in April, but you must call to be placed on the mailing list. The placement lottery will

On January 24th, local teens gathered together at a cozy community spot, Coffee Booths in Selden, for the first winter meeting of the Middle Country Public Library’s Teen Writers Cafe. The night was full of

During its January meeting, the Sachem Central School District Board of Education celebrated multiple students for their extraordinary volunteer efforts. Cayuga Elementary School second-grader Adrianna Esposito was recognized for organizing a toy drive, which collected 550 toys for families in
need within the Sachem community. Also recognized was a group of students from Sachem High School North for their participation in a recent toy and food drive. The incredible effort by the students collected 1,364 boxes of food for Sachem’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and countless toys during the Festival of Trees and Lights, one of the
community’s largest toy drives. Concluding the student recognitions, a large group of student leaders from Chippewa Elementary School were recognized for their continued volunteerism and community support organizing clothing and food drives.

New Opportunity The Art League of Long Island is introducing a new opportunity for Long Island based visual and interdisciplinary artists to become a leader in the creative community through its Resident Artist Membership Program. Six artists will ultimately be selected to participate in the program by a panel of educators and art leaders.
