TUSKEGEE AIRMAN SPEAKS WITH JUNIOR ROTC STUDENTS - William Johnson (far left), a former Tuskegee airman and Glen Cove resident, recently visited Patchogue-Medford High School to speak to Junior Air Force ROTC cadets. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. They flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa, earning more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses. Johnson spoke about racial segregation in the military and in civilian life, and answered questions from attendees. The Patchogue-Medford JROTC Program is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES in-district program.

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends. All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 Community Partner grant from United Way of Long Island. The funding will support programs for Long Islanders in need of affordable supportive housing and case management services. Options assisted more than 2,300 Long Islanders with their housing and service needs last year. “Our programs serve some of the area’s most vulnerable residents. For many, our housing is the first safe and stable home that they have known
in years,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options Executive Director. “We are grateful to United Way for their partnership and for their commitment to creating lasting change that lifts up everyone.” Options provides Medicaid funded comprehensive care management for adults and children with multiple chronic illnesses, serious mental illness, or HIV/AIDS. Applications are now available for Connetquot Central School District’s 2020-2021 Universal PreKindergarten program. To be eligible, your child must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2020. If you are interested in applying your child for this program, please contact

Wednesday, January 29th, Hicksville – As an outward expression of their faith, members of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic school community coordinated a winter-themed service project to benefit patients in Catholic Health Services cancer care facilities. The project, done by faculty staff, students, Girl Scouts and parents completed and donated over 150 handmade blankets to a team from Catholic Health Services at a ceremony at the Department of Education’s Hicksville offices on Wednesday. The blankets will be used to help keep cancer patients warm and comfortable at various CHS facilities across Long Island. “We hope that the warmth of the blankets, and the prayers and warm wishes of these beautiful school communities brings comfort to all who are suffering.” Said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. On hand at the ceremony representing the schools were Kathy Moran, principal of Holy
Trinity High School with some students, and Maryalice Doherty, principal of Holy Family School along with some of her elementary students. The team from Catholic Health Services included Joseph Lanzetta, Director of Planning and Community Health, Barbara Gibbons, Chief Nursing Officer CHS/ SJH & MMC; Maggie Glier, Nursing Director, Nursing Services, Megan Clark,
Nursing Manager, Cancer Care, and Jeanie Colamussi, RN Navigator. ‘The partnership between Catholic Health Services and Long Island’s Catholic schools enhances what each of us can do for our respective communities.” Said CHS’ Lanzetta. “Today however we are grateful to be the vehicle that delivers these gifts of compassion to provide additional comfort to those battling cancer.”

Tackling Depression Can Lead To A Happier New Year (NAPSI)—As cheerful and joyous as the New Year can be, it can also be a trigger for stress and depression for some people—but there is hope. There are many resources for people who feel wrung out ringing in the New Year. For example, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) can help. MFTs are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals, couples (married or not), families of all types, and groups to cure or relieve mental,
emotional and relational concerns of all kinds. How To Recognize Depression To help you tell if you or someone you care about is suffering from depression, the experts at the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offer these warning signs: • Feeling sad and/or irritable • Changes in weight or appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness
• Inability to concentrate, remember things or make decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide. How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to. • Engage in your life.
If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression. Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy. • Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. Developing good coping
and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of depression episodes.

Bayport-Blue Point’s AP Capstone Classes Conducted Research
Bayport-Blue Point High School’s first two Advanced Placement Seminar classes recently visited Stony Brook University’s Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library to conduct advanced research. While at the university and with the help of their teachers Ms. McKay and Mr. Meade, students delved into the databases to explore peer-reviewed journals and articles in preparation for their
research papers and presentations, both of which are components of the course’s upcoming AP exam. The students researched a wide variety of groupchosen topics — overpopulation, doping in international sports, and the health risks of vaping, to name just a few. SBU librarians helped students with technology, article location, and the transmission of information, educating
them on the available databases and the peer review process. They also trained the students on using the Boolean search method.
