Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north. Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element

of the compromise that required all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced. Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and

Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Retail Store Services, a special career education program, learned about the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a standard used by agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and

publishing statistical data related to the United States business economy. On their recent trip to the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, they used the mall directory to properly categorize stores using NAICS. Business Education Teacher Virginia Rios said, “Students apply what they learn in the classroom

during field trips. Here at the mall, they learn how to navigate by using the mall directory. They observe window displays and take note of how stores advertise. These are all things they learn in the classroom and a follow-up lesson will take place about what they learned at the mall.”

Helping students make positive life choices and creating safer communities is the goal of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program. Now in its seventh year at Longwood Middle School, the thirteen-week program is taught by trained law enforcement officers to prevent bullying, youth crime, violence, drug use and gang involvement. The G.R.E.A.T. middle school curriculum is a life-skills competency program designed to provide students with the tools they need to avoid gang pressure and youth

violence. “Both Deputy Bing and Deputy Bozzo have both been such a valuable asset to the students at the middle school,” said Assistant Principal Raegan Hololob. “The G.R.E.A.T. Program addresses important issues that our children are facing on a daily basis. Students receiving training in decision making, goal setting and conflict resolution are better prepared to navigate difficult issues they may face in the future.” As a culminating activity to the program, the students participated in the first Annual G.R.E.A.T.

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card. The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this timetested tradition. Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings

have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture and distribute valentines. Keeping Cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity. However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient. Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking

the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection. Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it’s easier to send cards when the time comes. Ensure greeting cards will arrive on time by mailing them out a week or two before the special day. Few things are worse than a card arriving late and seeming like an afterthought. Address cards by hand and sign them personally. Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care. Personal greeting cards for close friends and family members may also deserve an extra special touch, like including a custom message or a photograph. Greeting cards are about expressing sentiments to special people in your life. They’re popular on Valentine’s Day and all year long to commemorate holidays and special occasions.
