Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Here’s Hoping Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Athletes-HelpingAthletes (AHA) Club recently stopped by Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to visit students and explain the many advantages of participating extra-curricular programs, such as music, band, and cheering as well as sports. Seven members of the

club engaged the 5th graders in a variety of team-building activities to show the importance of working together. The 5th graders were anxious to ask questions about the CHS students’ experiences because they will be ‘moving up’ to the middle school in September. The Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students shared some

of their anxieties about the changes they would experience in terms of lockers, changing classes and homework. The CHS AHA Club is the largest in Nassau and Suffolk County. It consists of over 60 service-minded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs and pay their wisdom forward to local elementary school students.

Trophy Awarded On January 22nd, Coach Richard Downes, General Manager of Long Island Positive Direction, presented Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan with a championship trophy for the team’s win at the Ninth Annual Jump & Ball Tournament presented by LL Cool J. Based in Middle Island, LI Positive Direction is a traveling basketball team for boys ages 10 through 18. Their mission is to

provide young athletes with the opportunity to play basketball at a highly competitive level. They are committed to assisting the athletes grow and develop their athletic, educational, and social skills while assisting them in their classes. The program instills respect, discipline and responsibility, especially at school. “Sports are an intricate part of keeping children out of trouble during difficult times in their lives,” said

On Tuesday, January 26th, at 2:14 p.m., the Town of Brookhaven’s 451. TOWN Call Center reached the milestone of 1,000,000 calls since it started operations on September 12th, 2007. The 451-TOWN Call Center is the stateof-the-art constituent response system that enables residents to utilize one phone number to access non-emergency government information and services. The 1,000,000th call was from a Stony Brook resident who asked for a recycling schedule and magnet.

Stranger Danger Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, welcomed Matt Barbis and Patrick Chierichella to the campus on October 26th to talk to students about what is often called Stranger Danger. The presentation is made available to schools by the Rose Brucia Foundation, through the Community Health Department of Good Samaritan Hospital. Often using puppets to tell their story, the

child safety presentation specializes in packing vital information into a short series of segments. In a skit used to emphasize basic safety, students discuss what to do if a stranger approaches, for example asking for help to find a lost dog. Children come away from the presentation with the realization that dangers can exist in dealing with strangers. Strategies are developed to minimize those dangers, with an emphasis on trust in family

members, teachers and police. The Rose Brucia Foundation was organized to reduce the number of child abductions by educating and empowering youngsters with knowledge necessary to avoid dangerous situations. Students, staff and administration all thanked Matt and Patrick for sharing such useful information with the Bosti community.

WHAT A GAME - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Kyle Black and his Thunderbirds hosted undefeated Northport High School in a recent night game in Bohemia. The local boys kept the score close in the first half, but the Tigers of Northport opened up a big lead in the second half which the Thunderbirds could not overcome. Northport maintained its undefeated record (8-0/11-0) while Connetquot dropped to 3-5 (5-7 overall).

BE BRAVE - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Suzanne Baily and her ‘Team Brave’ members recently organized a series of confidence-building activities for 7th graders. Students watched the video of the song Brave by Sara Bareilles and were then challenged with the question, How Big Is Your Brave? Teachers and students worked together and in small groups to explore the idea of bravery and honesty, fostering relationships and creating a culture of compassion, empathy, trust and tolerance. Character Development

On Wednesday, October 28th, Connetquot’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Mrs. Lisa Farrell called together her students, teachers and staff for a creative, colorful, assembly as part of the school’s Character Education program. Terry Brennan and her talented troupe of performers, from the Creative Ministries (CM) Theater in Oakdale, visited with Duffield students to talk about bullying. Through story-telling, song and dance, Duffield students see bullies realize what they’re doing, and

why. Those being bullied learn to tell someone, speak up, and build their own confidence through true friends, and adults they trust. Students loved the music, dancing and acting. The CM presentation is entitled The Me I Wanna Be, and Mrs. Farrell would like to thank the Duffield PTA for making this show available. As part of the district’s Anti-Bullying initiative Duffield’s faculty and staff, under the facilitation of Youth & Family Services Coordinator Mrs. Pisani, has embraced many activities, themes,

programs and educational RONKONKOMA HONOREE - Rep. Pete King congratulated Ronkonkoma opportunities to further resident Jake Schmidt on receiving a Congressional nomination to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Jake is currently a student at St. Anthony’s High School. support good character. Mrs. Farrell said that “Our goal is teach our students to be respectful and kind and to treat everyone equally. We need to continue our efforts to stop bullying in our schools. One of the many ways is for families to teach children about character through modeling positive character traits for them. Children learn by watching. So let’s join together as parents and educators to teach our children/students to develop good character.”
