Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. Wedding planning involves many movable pieces that ultimately need to come together on the big day. Planning is typically a months-long process, and adhering to certain monthly benchmarks can help couples stay the course. Connetquot Varsity Cheer Is On Top The Connetquot High School varsity cheer team has had an extremely successful season thus far, under the direction of coaches Kelly Unterweiser and Kaitlyn Pfaltz. In addition to being named one of Newsday’s Top 10 Cheerleading Teams on Long Island, as published in the newspaper’s Jan. 9 edition, the team placed second at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional Championship, receiving the highest score out of all Suffolk County teams in their combined division, including Division 1 and Division 2 schools. Most recently, the team

placed first and third in the Large Varsity Division, combined with D1 and D2 schools, at the Section XI varsity competition. “This is a particularly impressive year in that 11 of 19 of the team’s athletes are competing for the first time at the varsity level and at in-person events for Section XI and UCA,” Ms. Unterweiser said. The Connetquot cheer team has proved to be one of the county’s top teams for the last couple of years. The team qualified for the Suffolk County Championship each year since 2017 and were UCA Regionals Divisional Champions in 2017, 2018

and 2019. Ms. Unterweiser also acknowledges that the team’s success is largely due to very talented athletes who lead the team, including the following: -Abigail Molter (senior) – 5-year member, back spot, Section XI AllDivision recipient -Kayla Unterweiser (junior) – 5-year member, flyer, two-time Section XI All-Division recipient, Section XI All-County recipient and All-Long Island 2nd Team recipient -Payton Rhodes (junior) – 4-year member, back spot, fall season MVP

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Helping Those Who Help Others PJ and Catherine Balzer are Long Island residents that truly make a difference in the lives of many. Together they run a charitable organization called The King’s Kids, where they share the love of Jesus Christ and help underprivileged people (mostly in the Mastic/ Shirley area). He lovingly assists people of any age (whether they are homeless or not) regardless of how they got where they are. PJ in particular drives all over to various food pantries, stores and other places to pick up donated items, which he will then deliver to those in need. He doesn’t only meet their physical needs by bringing them items such as diapers and food, but he also meets their emotional needs by genuinely loving and caring for them and meets their spiritual needs by ministering to them.

PJ and Catherine go above and beyond to serve others; for example, they will befriend an entire family of someone in need that they are helping, PJ will attend sports games and other events to cheers on children that may not have someone

there to do so and they will support young ladies who find themselves facing unplanned pregnancies. When Diane Caudullo, president of the Centereach Civic Association and a board member of the Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce, found out that his car (which plays a significant role in his efforts to help others) was in dire straights, she had a heart to help and simply tried to help him repair it. After a mechanic mentioned that the car was not worth repairing anymore, Diane’s mission changed. She set out

to find another car for him that was affordable, but in better condition. Armed with little funds, she approached Romaine Perkins, managing partner of Centereach Hyundai, and asked for advice on how not to get stuck with a real clunker. Upon learning about PJ and his good works, Romaine immediately offered to match the funds

Diane had set aside to get PJ a new car and and wanted to help find a more dependable vehicle for him. As word traveled, a few more people who knew PJ and Catherine wanted to contribute towards this blessing of a car. Romaine was able to take what they had collected and truly stretch it into a 2010 fully loaded Honda Pilot that seats 8 with fold-down seats for plenty of cargo! However, he didn’t stop there; Romaine went so far as to put new tires on the vehicle and cover the taxes and registration for it too. On Saturday, January 15th, the beautiful vehicle was all prepared under a beautiful balloon arch to be gifted to PJ and Catherine at Centereach Hyundai with large red ribbon on the hood and personalized car magnets that said The King’s Kids displayed on the doors. Many people came down to the dealership to watch PJ and Catherine come pick up the vehicle; some of those people helped fund the purchase

of the Honda Pilot, some stocked it with food to be distributed to those in need, some came to pray, some were employees of Centereach Hyundai who became invested in the journey, etc. PJ and Catherine were so very happy and thankful; they drove off into the sunset and are excited to continue to help others and spread the gospel!

New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with agriculture

in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications.

Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022. A Promising Future For Gene Weng, Sayville High School’s 2022 Regeneron Semifinalist Story and photos by Linda Mittiga After Sayville High School Tier-One ScienceResearch student Gene Weng completed his project on cell culture over the summer, he entered his research for consideration in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (formerly known as the Westinghouse/ Intel Science Talent Search). On January 6th, when the semifinalists were named, Gene Weng was listed among the elite group. Nationwide, there were 300 students selected. This number included forty-nine Long Island students from public and private schools who are now adding this prestigious accolade to their STEM resumes. Sayville High School Research advisor Adriana LoCicero and Science Department Chairperson Jennifer Byrnes were both elated but not surprised by Gene Weng’s inclusion as a semifinalist. His High School career has been nothing short of stellar and they applaud the well-deserved recognition for this remarkable young man. To understand what the research entailed, it is best to consult the source—Gene Weng. “While my project largely studied the growth of mouse embryonic stem

(ES) cells, an important characteristic of stem cells is their ability to differentiate. Pluripotent ES cells can specialize into all cell types in the body. The potential of stem cells has been harnessed since the first successful bone marrow transplant in 1972. Since then, stem cell research has accelerated, allowing scientists to develop treatments for diseases like leukemia.” Gene Weng’s road to success began years prior. “Throughout my high school career, I’ve been fascinated by research as a method to expand our body of knowledge. The summer before my sophomore year, I worked as an intern at inGenious Targeting Laboratory where I met Mr. Jon Barber, the tissue-culture supervisor.” During his internship and subsequent research, Gene discovered that, “Many high school students are left without access to cell culture. Currently, cell culture requires the use of a CO2 incubator, which can cost upward of $5000, not including the cost of maintenance.” This inspired Gene to find a low-cost solution as an alternative and he developed an idea for his research project. While Gene reconnected with Mr. Jon Barber, a qualified

and creativity.” Determined to counter the high prices of cell culture, Gene “developed a Low-Cost CO2 Vessel (LCCV) for less than $20 to carry out cell

culture. Rather than using a CO2 tank, the LCCV uses a chemical reaction to produce CO2 for growing cells within the vessel.” In addition, the Low-Cost CO2 Vessel (LCCV) Gene developed “can be made of readily available materials. The inexpensive nature of the LCCV would allow more people to carry out cell culture, especially high schoolers. Exposing high school students to handson science experiments will likely engage students and promote them to pursue science.” As important and ingenious his work might be, the scientific research was only the first part of process. To earn a semifinalist standing in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, Gene had to communicate his findings by completing and submitting an application detailing his research project. The set of specific criteria included Tweeting about the project. Unlike abstracts, this required another skill set: to condense the explanation to 280 characters or less. “Cell culture?” he tweeted. “No, it’s not the way you spend time on your cell phone! It’s the process that scientists

with lab coats in hightech labs use to grow cells. But now you can grow your own cells too! No fancy lab needed! Check out the LCCV (Low-Cost CO2 Vessel) today! #CellFie!” Being succinct and accurate about involved research is a sought-after skill, but Gene showed a flair for stimulating curiosity, a winning combination. The effect of Gene’s research certainly has forward-looking promise. “In the next 20 years, I believe that the development of live tissues and organs from stem cells will have a significant impact on the world. The ability to grow organs in tissue culture and having them available on-demand would be a boon to society, giving patients access to organ transplants through regenerative medicine.” But for now, having been named semifinalist, is sure to create more research opportunities for this outstanding young man. Congratulations go to Gene Weng for achieving semifinalist status in the Regeneron Competition.

includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. HUD Announces Additional Assistance To Keep Foster Youth Housed The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Thursday announced that over $1 million has been awarded to public housing agencies (PHAs) across the country to provide housing assistance to youth who are aging out of foster care and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Twenty-six PHAs in 20 states will receive this funding to continue HUD’s efforts to assist young people transitioning out of foster care. In September, through the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) Competitive Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), HUD awarded over $14 million to 18 PHAs to prevent homelessness among young adults who have aged out, or are close to aging out, of the foster care system. New York was awarded $35,901. Please see the chart with local funding. “Every young person

deserves the opportunity to live with housing stability,” said Danielle Bastarache, HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Housing and Voucher Programs. “HUD’s Foster Youth to Independence Initiative has made that a reality for hundreds of youth by helping to provide access to housing for those who are aging out of foster care. Our department is pleased to provide additional funding to public housing agencies across the country so

they can support more individuals as they lay the foundation for their future success.” “Youth aging out of foster care need support, and this funding allows housing authorities in New York to provide stable homes at a critical time,” said Stephen Murphy, HUD Deputy Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey. “Young adults living in poverty already face a myriad of challenges; access to a Foster Youth to Independence voucher

makes a huge difference by providing up to 36 months of rental assistance as well as supportive services to assist recipients on their paths to self-sufficiency.” HUD’s Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) Initiative provides housing assistance and supportive services to young people with a child welfare history who are at-risk-of or experiencing homelessness. To be eligible for FYI funding, public housing authorities must:

Administer a Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, Enter into a partnership agreement with a Public Child Welfare Agency (PCWA); Accept young people referred by their partnering PCWA; and Determine that the referred youth are eligible for HCV assistance. External Diploma Program

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. The Story Of Cupid What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving

mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl

instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s

Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century,

when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push

people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.

Connetquot High School Welcomes Business Academy’s Inaugural Class Connetquot High School students have always had the opportunity to take a wide array of business classes but can now focus their study of business principles through the school’s Business Academy. According to district Director of Social Studies and Business Robert Cassagne, 35 students, who comprise the Business Academy’s inaugural class, can now follow the path

to achieving a Career and Technical Education accreditation, preparing them for real-life skills and employment after graduation. “The Business Academy allows the students who have found an interest in business to follow their path,” Mr. Cassagne said. “Through the academy, we will teach real-life business skills through courses and partnerships with outside

business organizations.” To graduate from the Business Academy, students must earn 4.5 business credits, including required courses, and complete 54 hours of work-based learning. Seniors must be enrolled in the Virtual Enterprise course with a GPA of 90% or higher and with plans to pass the NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) exam to

receive CTE designation at the conclusion of the year. In order to maintain membership, students must be enrolled in at least one business course per year, with a GPA for business courses remaining at 90% or higher. Additionally, students must abide by the code of conduct, be a member of the Business Honor Society in grades 11 and 12, maintain good academic standing in all academic courses and attend Business Academy meetings. Recently, Connetquot High School graduate and Islanders account manager Steven Bulzomi

virtually met with Business Academy students and spoke about his career. He offered the students the

opportunity to take a photo on the ice during a game if the academy’s students can sell 50 tickets to a game.

HPV Vaccination

Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types

of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

There are pros and cons to participating in clinical trials, and breast cancer patients can speak with their medical teams about the advantages and disadvantages of each trial they’re considering. worth dispelling is that clinical trials are only an option for people who have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. In fact, the NCI notes that clinical trials are available for all stages of cancer.
