Sampling Cuisine Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School students enrolled within Loredana Costa’s Italian classes in the Connetquot Central School District recently completed their unit on learning how to recognize and pronounce food items, and celebrated their new-
found knowledge with a festive “La cena italiana” (The Italian Dinner) event. “La cena italiana” was held within the school cafeteria, and showcased delicious food items based on Italian culture that Ms. Costa and the students had prepared, alongside dishes
that OBMS parents were generous enough to make for the event. As a means of testing the students newly garnished skills, the event finished with Italian-themed games and prizes were distributed afterward.

At the January 24th Town Board meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle honored John Rago of Coram upon his retirement from Suffolk County United Veterans where he served as Outreach Coordinator for the Supportive Services for Veterans Families Program. Mr. Rago also served as the Town of Brookhaven Veterans Service Officer prior to working for Suffolk County United Veterans. John is a Navy veteran, serving two years on active duty (1970 to 1972) and six years as a Naval Reservist. While on active duty, he served aboard nuclear submarines as a sonar technician aboard the fleet ballistic missile submarine U.S.S. Francis Scott Key and on the fast attack submarine U.S.S. Grayling (SSN 646). After discharge from the Navy, John had a 40 year career as an appliance service technician for Westinghouse, Amana and General Electric until he retired in 2011. John is an active member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is currently the Commander of VFW Post 400 in Farmingville and serves on the Veterans Advisory Board of the towns of Riverhead and Brookhaven and Congressman Lee Zeldin.

A Survivor’s Story Come on down as the Middle Country Public Library welcomes Regina Calcaterra on March 22nd at 7 p.m. Regina will share her profound story of survival and triumph and the journey that led her to write her memoir, Etched in Sand, this year’s Middle Country Reads selection. This will be followed by a book signing. With heartbreaking
honesty, Regina shares how she fought to keep her brother and sisters together, while struggling to rise above her painful early life. Regina and her four siblings persevered through an abusive childhood only to find themselves faced with the devastating limitations of the foster-care system and intermittent homelessness in one of the nation’s most
affluent regions, Long Island. Currently, Regina Calcaterra is an attorney working for the State of New York. Etched in Sand is an unforgettable reminder that it is possible to rise above one’s past. Good Starts Grant The Allstate Foundation has awarded the Middle Country Library Foundation a $20,000 “Good Starts Young” grant in support of programs encouraging youth empowerment and
volunteerism. The grant will support the library’s Allstate Readiness Series, which showcases teen programming that fosters creativity, STEM skills and community engagement.

Tops in Robotics Members of the Middle Country Central School District Newfield High School robotics team recently received the Tournament Champions and THINK Award trophies for their performance in the Massapequa VEX Starstruck Robotics Competition. The team, dubbed the Roverines, finished
in first place in every statistical category at the competition, and won the THINK award for having the best autonomous programming out of any other participating high school. In addition, the team was also recognized as the team with the “best overall record,” “best offensive robot,” “best defensive

Students Attend Inauguration
Forty-six Longwood High School juniors and seniors learned valuable lessons in citizenship and democracy as they stood in the nation’s capital to witness history. Students were chosen to travel to the inauguration of the 45th president based on an internal essay highlighting issues they felt were facing the nation today, their advice to the incoming president and why the students, themselves, were excellent representations of Longwood High School. Additionally, many emphasized the need to unify the country and
improve race relations. “The trip was an amazing once in a lifetime experience,” said high school junior Eyad Sleem. “The trip opened my eyes to the patriotism and courage of the American people. It made me want to go into politics even more.” High School Social Studies Department Chairperson Daniel Tapia stated that ensuring the students experience history first-hand is an ongoing goal. Students from Longwood have attended the last three presidential inaugurations. “Being part of historical moments is something
our students seem to understand in a way that makes us so excited to teach history,” said Mr. Tapia. “We are fortunate to have such great support to help our students throughout the Longwood community.” “Attending the swearingin of President-Elect, Donald Trump was an event I am grateful to have witnessed,” said junior Cheyenne Rosado. “The long drive and endless walking seemed worth the fatigue to see an event so highly administered throughout history. Prevent Wedding Day Foot Pain Master the Wedding Save-the-Date While some couples may get cold feet on their wedding days, there’s no reason for anyone, including brides who don high heels in the name of fashion, to endure foot pain. Foot pain is a common complaint for those unaccustomed to wearing stilettos or formal footwear. Wedding attire is not worn every day, so it’s no surprise that wedding footwear may contribute to some aches and pains. Podiatrists warn that heels between one and two inches in height are the best to maintain foot health. But that heel size does not work for all brides. Brides-to-be, bridesmaids and others can employ these tips to keep their feet pain-free throughout the ceremony and reception: around the house with a pair of socks GIVE YOUR FEET A BREAK Swap out a higher heel with a lower to stretch out straps and enable them one every couple of hours. Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their schedules, many couples now turn to save-the-date cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards once were reserved only for weddings that required travel or special circumstances, such as destination weddings. But such cards have now become commonplace for all weddings. That’s because many people plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months
in advance. Busy people require plenty of notice to include this important date on their calendars, particularly when wedding dates fall during popular travel seasons or around the holidays. Save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding, though some are sent as early as a year before the big day. Once a date and a location is secured, savethe-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assemble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. Everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a save-the-date card. There’s no turning back once cards are sent, so couples will need to be certain everyone they want to attend is getting
advance notice. It’s acceptable to mail save-the-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the save-the-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the save-the-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them. They can showcase couples’ clever personalities or funny quirks. Keep in mind it is in poor taste to mention gifts or registries on save-the-date cards. There will be plenty of time to direct guests to registries later on.

Determining Wedding Day Dress Codes Wedding invitations do more than merely announce that a celebration is on the horizon. Invitations provide key information about the ceremony and festivities to follow. Many details, including the location, time and date of the wedding, are spelled out on the wedding invitations. However, invitations can sometimes leave guests confused about the appropriate style of attire for the occasion. Even though wedding invitations rarely offer specific information regarding attire, chances are the wording will provide clues that can help guests interpret the desired dress code. CASUAL If the invitation mentions casual attire, it’s important to realize that everyday casual

shirt for men. Women can wear a sundress or slacks or a skirt and an attractive blouse. If the invitation mentions beach casual, shorts and even sandals are likely acceptable. SEMIFORMAL Semiformal dresswear, sometimes referred to as “dressy casual,” is a step up from casual clothing. Cocktail dresses or a more elegant skirt and top are the norms. Gentleman generally wear a suit and tie. Coordinate the colors of clothing to the time of day. Fabrics should represent the season. For example, a linen suit will not pass at a winter wedding. FORMAL Formal attire is the default dress code for
the majority of weddings. When the invitation does not specify a dress code, it is safe to assume formal attire is expected. Men can choose among a dark suit and tie or a tuxedo. Women can opt for a formal cocktaillength dress, a classic suit or a long dress. Select among tones that are gray, black or brown. BLACK TIE Black tie events also require formal attire. Black tie typically goes hand-in-hand with an evening wedding. Black tie is more rigid for male guests, who should wear a tuxedo, black bow tie, cummerbund and patent leather shoes. Women have a little more leeway with their attire at such gatherings. A long evening gown might be preferable. However, a
chic cocktail dress also can be acceptable, and darker, neutral colors are most appropriate. Some invitations may reference “Black Tie Preferred.” While men may opt for a tuxedo, a black suit also can be worn. WHITE TIE The most formal of occasions will request white tie attire. Ball gowns and tuxedoes with tails are the norm, as are dramatic jewelry and hairstyles. White tie attire is akin to what one might see worn to awards shows. When attending a wedding, it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Guests can consult with fellow guests or the bride and groom if they are unsure of the dress code.

As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,
“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teacher’s Association (CTA), met with officers of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) on January 19th to provide support for their upcoming Gala and Fashion Show. Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently held two powerful assemblies in order to teach the students multiple life lessons, including how to build positive character traits and the positive outcomes of overcoming difficult obstacles.
