Recent tests of studentconstructed towers exemplified compression, tension and torsion as part of a lesson on load forces in Kim Latkovich’s Introduction to Technology classes at Samoset Middle School in the Sachem Central School District. Before the activity students researched

bridges and the complex truss systems that add to their overall structural integrity. Arch, cablestayed, cantilever and truss bridges were among the types researched. Student teams carefully constructed towers utilizing Balsa wood, glue and cardboard gussets for added strength, with

the goal of supporting the greatest vertical load possible. Following construction, each group’s tower was tested by gradually pouring sand into a hanging bucket until the structure failed. The load was then weighed and recorded to compare with the designs of their peers.

When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. At 3 AM on a July 2012 morning, I lay helpless on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because my racing mind did not

extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking

and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or six full blown panic attacks per day, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was

dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder. It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.” “Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it. By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression. It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and

written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer. This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community. After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question. Through sharing my story in the media, and through speaking engagements, I have turned it around from a challenge to a gift. Sachem High School East senior Vincent Zhang has been named a Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar by the Society for Science & the Public. Vincent was one

of 300 esteemed young scientists selected from a group of 1,964 applicants spanning 601 high schools in 48 states, two U.S. territories and eligible students living in seven other countries. Vincent’s research, “MRI Texture Analysis for Detection of Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis in Breast Cancer Patients,” was among submission topics ranging from medicine and health to bioengineering, physics, genomics, mathematics, material science and behavioral science. Scholars were

selected based on their extraordinary research abilities, commitment to academics and innovative thinking. “What is most impressive about this accomplishment is that Vincent has already gained recognition for the work he has done at the Garcia Polymer Lab, and now he has attained national recognition for his work with breast cancer at Stony Brook Medical School’s Radiology Lab,” Sachem High School East science research teacher Dr. Michael Vaccariello said.

Arm raises, both with arms extended to the side and in front of the body, can work these areas well. Brides who want to tone up can speak with a ﬁtness instructor at a nearby gym to learn various ways to ﬁrm their arms, chests and backs in advance of their wedding days.

Tying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000. That ﬁgure may surprise some couples, many of whom may not be able to afford spending so much on their receptions. Couples may feel pressure to compete with friends and relatives whose weddings they have attended in the past, and that may compel some to stretch their budgets and even go into debt to ﬁnance their nuptials. Customizing experiences for guests is a major reason why today’s couples are spending so much more per guest than in generations past. Couples may want to give their guests unique experiences, but should not stretch their budgets or go into debt to do so. Don’t underestimate the basics: great music and dancing, and delicious food.

Tie the knot in winter

Summer and fall were the most popular wedding seasons of the last two years, and that does not ﬁgure to change anytime soon. Couples can take advantage of those trends by getting married in winter, a slow season for wedding venues and vendors, who might be more ﬂexible with their prices. The most popular months to tie the knot were September, June and October, so couples who don’t want to wed in winter but want to avoid paying top prices should avoid those three months.

Let the pot come to a low boil before setting the burner to low heat and simmering with the lid off. After 15 minutes, add in chard leaves and stir. If at this point the lentils still seem al dente or are no longer covered in liquid, add a little more stock or water until they are submerged. Season as needed with your red chili flakes, salt and pepper. Place sausage links into the lentil mixture so that they are halfway covered. Let cook for another 10 minutes or until the lentils absorbed. Serve with crusty bread if desired! Enjoy!

Kitchen Tools: Large Dutch oven or crock-pot (or large pot with lid) Large wooden spoon Sharp knife Preparation: In a large Dutch oven or saucepan with a lid, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sausages in a single layer. Cook on each side until they are brown. Remove sausages from pan and set aside. Add the remaining oil to the pan and add in onion. Cook onions for 5 minutes until they are tender. Add garlic and cook 1 minute before adding in carrots, celery, fennel and chard stems. Stir well and cook for 5 more minutes.

Add in lentils and stir. Pour in wine to de-glaze the pan, scrapping any bits up off the bottom if necessary. Pour in the remaining stock (or water) making sure the lentils are almost entirely submerged. Add the bay leaf.

While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island.
