First-graders in Rachel Walczyk’s class at Coram Elementary School are learning how small acts of kindness can make a significant impact for those in need. So far, the students have sewn close to 40 pouches for animals affected by the severe wildfires in Australia. As part of their non-fiction reading and writing units, the students learned about the different animals that live in Australia and how vast
areas of habitats have been destroyed from the massive bushfires. Close to 11,000 miles away, it is easy to feel powerless. “We all feel helpless, but making pouches for the injured animals is something we definitely can do,” said Mrs. Walczyk. After locating a specific type of pattern, the students traced and sewed the pouches, which vary in size to fit different species of wildlife.
“I hope that the kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and bats will love our pouches, and they will keep them warm and safe,” said first-grader, Mia. In addition to donating fabric, teachers and students have held fundraising events to help offset costs. The students are hoping to complete 100 pouches shortly to be sent to a group in Maine, organizing relief efforts.

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.’ During Catholic Schools Week, schools across the Diocese, and across the country, mark the occasion with Masses and special entertainment and activities for the students, families, parishioners and members of their extended communities. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and the school’s contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation
How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new
families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well. Catholic schools are unique in many significant ways, and Catholic Schools Week highlights many of those differences. First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school. Catholic Schools Week is the best opportunity for families who might be considering the benefits of a Catholic education
to experience first-hand the commitment to academic excellence and faith formation in your local school. Patchogue, NY – December 10, 2019. Long Island Community Hospital has recently been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. To receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. The program must also have procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. “Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Celebrating The Chinese New Year
Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using fireworks, and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics. Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward. Some other traditions associated with the holiday
include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes thoroughly prior to the dawn of the new year, welcoming family for a big reunion and avoiding activities deemed to be taboo. Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. Children receive money tucked inside of red envelopes to help transfer fortune from elders to younger generations. In addition to red envelopes, homes and decorations are adorned in red. The red color was purported to be instrumental in scaring away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to
live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

Showing Support For Soldiers An extraordinary display of giving shined bright at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as students across grade levels gathered numerous donations for members of
the United States military stationed overseas as part of a campaign sponsored by New York State Sen. Monica Martinez. The effort, led by several fifth grade students, accumulated 502 letters for
soldiers and 817 food and personal hygiene items. As the letter writing campaign persisted across the school building, students learned about deployed veterans and the sacrifices they make each day.
Steering Clear Of Bullies Combating bullying was the focus of a recent twoday program at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as fourth and fifth grade students attended the Steer Clear of Bullies program presented by Child Abuse Prevention Services.
During the activities, students shared their feelings and practiced identifying expressions associated with specific feelings. Additionally, students went over the ways that feelings are shown, such as physical, verbal and situational, and learned the signs
of cyberbullying and strategies to avoid those situations. As the program concluded, students were encouraged to be good friends, classmates and family members and always spread kindness.
