the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities. Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments. They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions. These partners joined together in early 2013 to combine their expertise in a streamlined and
cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The user-friendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well. The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, communitybased organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities.

On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bi-county effort to help Long Islanders improve their health. A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event. NSHC is the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this ground-breaking endeavor is exactly what

On November 20th, Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Assistant Principal Mr. Joseph Licato welcomed family, friends and invited guests to the first annual Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction ceremony. Held at the Alice R. Schaefer Auditorium, the ceremony reflected the excitement, and dignity, of the evening Forty-two students were inducted into the first ‘class’ of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, along with the introduction of the society’s officers. Officers recited their pledges, prior to the induction ceremony, acknowledging the responsibilities, as well as their promise to support the interests of music
education. RMS Tri-M officers were introduced as: Kristin Hansen (President), Vincent Fasano (VP), Alexa Dowling (Secretary), Rebecca Moulton (Treasurer) and Natalie Parla (Historian). Tri-M Honor Society advisor Mrs. Nicole White joined Mr. Licato in welcoming parents, friends and invited guests, while congratulating the first group of inductees. RMS music teachers Dr. Saladino, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Malafronte were on stage to congratulate the students, and Connetquot School District Board of Education Vice President Mr. Leo R. Marinick was in the audience with proud family and friends.
District Director of Music Education, Mr. Jon-Michael Lasher was also on hand to congratulate the students, and their parents. Mrs. White explained the significance of membership in the Tri-M Honor Society and congratulated the new inductees, and their parents. Mr. Lasher, added that “ … the organization promotes student leadership, and these students are the future leaders in the music department, their school, and community.” Lasher was a member of Tri-M as a Connetquot HS student. Congratulations to the newly inducted, members of the Ronkonkoma Middle School Tri-M Honor Society!

Maggie Sullivan is a bright, enthusiastic, third grade student at the Cherokee Street Elementary School in Ronkonkoma. Recently Maggie had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Tim Bishop, and U.S. Senator Charles Schumer in an effort to lobby for their support of legislation entitled Promise To Remember Me. November was National Diabetes Recognition
Month, and Maggie has been active as a JDRF Youth Ambassador who has promoted awareness in her community, and across Suffolk County. On November 12th she led the lighting ceremony at the Suffolk County Executive Office Building, and read the Pledge of Allegiance. Maggie encouraged Cherokee faculty, staff and her classmates to wear blue to help bring further awareness to
this very serious disease. According to Cherokee Street Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson, “We are all proud of Maggie and her efforts as a Youth Ambassador for JDRF.” Maggie Sullivan is another fine example of the spirit of the Cherokee School community, and its ability to support all members of its student body.
Partnerships Make Catholic Education Work Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high Schools upon graduation, and 99% of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration and cooperation is not an accident, however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from Nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students
and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education. The ‘continuum effort’ manifests itself in a variety of ways that benefit students directly, help faculty members grow their skills, and help the schools groom their next generation of skilled administrators. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on initiatives to advance
Catholic education. St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years, with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000, based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many of our students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education. The relationship with St John’s also helps
with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and on-site at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices. The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future Administrators. Teachers in the Diocese
who have been chosen to participate in this program receive a Masters degree in Administration. The commitment to excellence displayed by participants in this program assures that the Diocese will have future leaders with the required competencies to lead as visionaries and manage operations successfully. Molloy College and the Diocese have created a series of workshops to improve instructional delivery to meet the needs of diverse learners. The Molloy faculty has been working closely with schools in the Diocese on response to intervention, the use of educational technology,
and the implementation of best practices. One of the most interesting aspects of the work with Molloy has been the pilot program to integrate iPads into the special education program at St. Agnes Cathedral School in Garden City. Together, from the formation of values in elementary school, to the development of character in high school, to the polishing of skills in these great colleges and universities, Catholic children get an advantage for life, and their families get a solid return on their investment.

Mrs. Jennifer Cambria is a PTA mom at Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School, and a teacher in a local school district. At a recent Cherokee PTA meeting to discuss student needs, and fundraising ideas, Mrs. Cambria suggested something called McTeacher Night at a local McDonald’s Restaurant! Phone calls and letters were exchanged, and on November 19th a dozen Cherokee teachers, PTA moms and even Assistant Principal Patricia Murthy, were taking orders, preparing desserts, serving food and helping raise funds for needed activities. PTA Treasurer Mrs. Fran
Imbasciani thanked the teachers, PTA members, Cherokee parents and children that visited the McDonald’s Restaurant on Portion Road in Ronkonkoma from 5 to 7 p.m. She also singled out McDonalds’ Area Supervisor Joe Amato and Store Manager Tim Ward for their cooperation in making McTeacher Night such a success. While Assistant Principal Mrs. Murthy enjoyed the experience, and loved meeting so many parents and student at McDonalds, she did point out that “… that McFlurry machine was not as easy as it looked!” PTA President Christina Cater thanked everyone
involved in making McTeacher Night such a success. The restaurant will provide a percentage of the sales during the 5 to 7 p.m. hours. Donosaur Presentation Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, eagerly brought his students to the school’s gymnasium for an exciting assembly on November 7th. Slocum students took part in a school assembly by the organization Dinosaurs Rock! This interactive media presentation awed the students with real, and
recreations of, giant fossils of prehistoric animals, and included modern, if unusual, sea creatures. “The children enjoyed the show and were rewarded at the end of the presentation when they were permitted to take home their own specimens of shells,” according to Mr. Delio. The presentation covered over a billion years of geologic time in less than an hour.

Slocum youngsters had an opportunity to see, and touch, fossils from prehistoric beasts that ruled the oceans 100 million years ago! The students left the presentation so excited to have experienced the history of the earth, and to be able to share their experiences with the families by bringing home their own fossils!

Most of the traditions deal with holidays, and birthdays, and how that student’s particular family celebrates those special events. Some bake cookies, or buy ornaments,
or create their own games, but they all show affection, and look forward to celebrating those special events, each year, with family members. The colorful quilt was revealed on November 15th, and will be on display in the fourth grade hallway for all to read, and enjoy!
GOLDEN GIRL - Legislator Rob Calarco recently joined with Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine to congratulate Senior Girl Scout Cassandra Asselta on achieving the Girl Scouts of America Gold Award. Asselta received the organization’s highest award for her remarkable work in restoring a 1964 pumper truck at the Brookhaven Volunteer Firefighter’s Museum. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!” All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college. It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of

Students enrolled in the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology Suffolk Aviation Program in Shirley benefit from work site tours because they provide useful information. Where else can they get the opportunity to speak directly to experts in the field? Students learn the duties, responsibilities, and requirements of a job when they have the chance to make this connection.
The experts are keen on sharing their expertise because they know these students are interested in learning. Recently, Work Based Learning Coordinator Rosaria Broesler secured a work site tour for the Suffolk Aviation students at the Suffolk County Aviation Command in Ronkonkoma. Police officers in aviation ran through the preflight checklist with
ZOMBIE 5K - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) recently held a zombie-themed 5k walk to benefit charity. Students, teachers, parents, administrators and residents from Connetquot Central School District community, the Professional Pilot split into two teams of Living vs. Zombies, all participated in variety of fun obstacle students as they sat aboard challenges during the indoor activity. The funds from registration fees were donated to a helicopter. Airframe the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC). Mechanic students were given information from maintenance staff on repair and maintaining the police helicopters. Ground Support Equipment Teacher George Dzenkowski said, “All the students learned about career pathways in law enforcement and the duties and responsibilities of police officers.”
Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia, recently visited with Advanced Recorder Ensemble students to witness preparations for upcoming holiday concerts. On November 4th Dr. Cholden visited with 5th grade Advanced Recorder Ensemble members, under the
direction of Mrs. Lucy Puglin. Practicing with 4 different size recorders (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), the youngsters meet every Monday morning, before classes, and practice for 30 minutes. “This recorder program is unique to Bosti Elementary School and has been active for many years,” said Dr. Cholden. Several
of the arrangements for the recorders have been written by Mrs. Puglin. Many of the current students in the recorder ensemble have had older siblings who have participated in the Bosti program. Dr. Cholden congratulated Mrs. Puglin and her talented students, and told them she looks forward to their upcoming holiday concerts.

through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Among the career opportunities available to those who complete the course are working in a hospital, outpatient center, or physicians’ offices. Another option is they can become a pharmaceutical manufacturer or wholesaler. Advanced credit is available from Monroe College to qualifying students.

Citizens Advisory Board Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conflict, concerns and issues regarding the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further
promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DeMarco called the initiative an important first step in “preserving public trust in county law enforcement,” which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny in the past year. The first meeting will be held in early February and the Board will be tasked with the following responsibilities: • Provide annual reviews to the Sheriff concerning
complaints and testimony from the community related to operations, policies and standard operating procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. • Review and comment on programs to promote, aid and encourage community input. • Review and comment on the development and operation of the Office’s law enforcement activities. • Represent the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board at community events. • Establish regular

The Bond Of Brotherly Lover I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong. My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration. For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family. My little brother is the reason why I strive for
greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness. My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine. There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in
us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our
preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only
rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

One Point Short On a cool, bright, Saturday afternoon, November 16th, in a semifinal division I football game between Sachem North, and the host Connetquot Thunderbirds, close to 2,500 fans watched as the Flaming Arrows eked out a one point win! The winners will meet William Floyd H.S. for the Suffolk County Championship at Stony Brook University on November 24th. Sachem took an early lead, and held a 14-0 advantage at the half. Coach Hansen’s T-birds came on strong in the second half as quarterback Ricky Hahn passed for a
total of 170 yards on 13 completions. Hahn also scored the first touchdown for Connetquot late in the fourth quarter. With 45 seconds left on the clock in that last quarter, Connetquot’s Tyler Nason scored a touchdown, bringing the T-birds score to 14-13. Connetquot called a time out to determine what the last play of the game would be, and decided to go for ‘two’. Should Connetquot score that two point conversion, it would take a 15-14 victory over the visitors from Sachem. But it was not to be. Connetquot’s attempt
to score with their last possession was foiled by an aggressive Sachem defense. While Connetquot players, coaches and fans were disappointed with the outcome, loyal fans applauded their T-birds for an outstanding season, and tremendous effort in this semi-final game. Congratulations to Coach Hansen and his staff, all the players and their families for making this community proud of the 2013 Connetquot Football program. The Connetquot Thunderbirds finished the season with an impressive 8-2 record.

Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally.
