On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life Is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains. These and 174 other Creative Cups will be auctioned on Thursday, March 19th, at 6 p.m. at Adelphi University’s University Center in Garden City. NBC’s Pat Battle, a breast cancer survivor herself, again will host the event. To date, chief sponsors are Leviton Foundation and Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. Everyday Heroes Students of Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently joined by award-winning songwriters and musicians Beth and Scott Bierkos to prepare songs for visiting “hometown heroes.”
Students and teachers worked with the singers to compose songs that reflect understanding, appreciation and respect for local teachers, parents and volunteers, as well as members of the military, police force and fire
department. The songwriters helped students be more expressive as they created the songs that they will perform at the upcoming Everyday Heroes school assembly.

Cosmetology Visit Peter Coppola, a worldrenowned icon in the beauty industry, of the Peter Coppola Company, recently visited a class of 25 Cosmetology students at Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School. Coppola and his staff performed product and hair technique demonstrations and taught students tips for pursuing cosmetology careers.
Coppola has made significant contributions to the hair-care market by utilizing new techniques and creating trends emulated by stylists worldwide. While at the school, Coppola taught students about the company’s new keratin product, demonstrated different hair-cutting methods, and shared institutional knowledge of
the beauty industry. The school visit served as a launch pad for the Peter Coppola Company Education Team’s new InSchoolPro Program. The new program provides educational tutorials online, invitations to manufacturer and professional symposiums, and job placement opportunities.

Blessings In A Box
To help combat hunger in the Longwood community, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert recently collected non-perishable food items and canned goods at the First Annual Holiday Food Drive to benefit Blessings in a Backpack Longwood CSD. Now in its second year, Blessings in a Backpack Longwood CSD provides students in the federal free and reduced lunch program with nutritious food to bring home every Friday during the school year. The program began in March 2014 when two Longwood School District moms, Trisha Ewald and Becky Eisenberg, heard that children were coming to school hungry on Monday mornings. They teamed up to create a selfsustaining community chapter that would address hunger in their own district where nearly 45% of the children are eligible
for free or reduced lunch. The program relies solely on fundraising efforts and does not receive any financial support from the Longwood School District. All funds generated are channeled through the national organization which issues a credit card for food. “Our effort ensures that children won’t go hungry over the weekend,” said coordinator Trisha Ewald. “For only $20 we can fill five backpacks and for only $150 a child can be fed every weekend for an entire school year. We keep our costs at a minimum so we can feed more children.” The program, which previously served 50 students at Charles E. Walters (CEW) Elementary School, has expanded and now feeds 100 students at both the elementary and the middle school. Each Tuesday, volunteers gather to fill the backpacks with nutritious, kidfriendly meals consisting
of two breakfast items like oatmeal, four lunch or dinner items like macaroni and cheese, and two snack items. Backpacks are distributed on Fridays and returned empty on Mondays. “Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we need to make sure they’re getting nutritional meals over the weekend as well,” said CEW Principal Yvette MercadoTilley. “The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in shorter attention spans and lower academic achievement. Coding Celebration The Middle Country Central School District students recently completed an “Hour of Code” as part of a nationwide initiative to involve millions of students in computer programming education. “Hour of Code” aims to encourage students to explore computer science career opportunities and stress the need to integrate computer programming lessons into everyday school instruction. Students districtwide participated and completed hands-
on activities that taught coding basics including simple algorithms, conditional statements, or coding language. The students also learned the fundamentals of repeatlooping, which allows a student to repeat a code. “Computer literacy has become vital for completing daily tasks, let alone career readiness,” said Superintendent Roberta Gerold. “We must begin to provide computer science lessons to students in order to encourage critical thinking and prepare our students for
the ever growing digital world.” The “Hour of Code” encouraged computer science research among students beginning at the elementary level up through the high school. Similar to adopting foreign languages, younger students are able to grasp computer language concepts more effectively. This nationwide initiative helped to lay the groundwork for increased computer literacy throughout the district.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School recently hosted its 4th Annual Habitat for Humanity 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run. More than 200 runners raced through the
Bohemia neighborhood, cheered on by family and friends. Runners, sponsors and supporters raised over $5,000 for Habitat for Humanity - funds that will be used for students to build a new home for a local family in need.
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus welcomed the runners at the finish line, thanking them for their participation and wishing each one a safe, happy and healthy holiday.

Sharing Spirit Connetquot Central School District Sycamore Elementary School third graders brought some holiday cheer to their neighbors at the Bristol Assisted Living residence by singing and playing Christmas and Hanukkah
songs. At the conclusion of the concert, Sycamore students distributed handmade holiday cards to the residents, spent time talking to them, and shared cookies and beverages before boarding the bus
back to school. The field trip gave students the opportunity to give back to the community and learn about the rich history of the Connetquot community.

LOCAL SCOUT HONORED - On January 10th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony for Frank Ballarano III from Boy Scout Troop 40 in Medford, who attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was accompanied by his father Frank Ballarono and mother Patricia Ballarono. The event was held at the North Patchogue Fire Department. For his project, Frank revitalized a garden area with plants, two benches, and flower boxes on each end. His project can be seen at St. Sylvester Roman Catholic Church in Medford in front of the Parish Outreach building.

Class Freezes Over Kindergarten students at Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center did more than walk in a “Winter Wonderland” during gym classes. Students moved stationto-station riding sleds and toboggans, “ice skating,” “fishing” in a frozen lake,
throwing “snowballs” and sliding down “Unity Hill.” Completing these activities helped students build strength, endurance, coordination and motor planning skills, while encouraging active learning at a young age. Students pulled their classmates in toboggans

and sleds attached to scooters; used carpet squares to simulate ice skating; fished in a frozen lake using fishing rods, metal washers and magnets; threw white balls to simulate snowballs; and went for a sleigh ride down “Unity Hill” using scooters and snow disks.
Keep Islip Clean marked its 25th Anniversary in December with a celebration hosted by the Seatuck Environmental Association at the historic Scully Estate in Islip. Over 125 volunteers and supporters toasted KIC’s quarter century of keeping every hamlet in the Town of Islip clean, green and litterfree. Former Chairman Bill Johnston and his wife Gloria were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 20 years of CLASS FREEZES OVER - Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive service, by KIC’s incoming Pre-K/Kindergarten Center kindergarten students learned to be active learners during Winter Wonderland-themed gym classes, where students aim white balls, or snowballs, at buckets. This CYO basketball program, according to the chairman, has grown from an initial 30 youngsters, to this year’s enrollment of over 300 – boys and girls. sportsmanship, while providing an opportunity to make new friends, and just have fun. Games are played at local Connetquot and Sachem schools, as well as St. Joseph’s Elementary School gym/ auditorium. Parents, along with siblings and grandparents, are on hand to cheer their teams on. Everyone is looking forward to another exciting year of St. Joseph’s CYO Clinic Division basketball.

Mrs. Sandra Rubin, interim Principal of Connetquot’s Idle Hour Elementary School, welcomed parents, students, faculty and friends to the November 21st Native American Exhibition and Feast! While class moms prepared a feast for all to enjoy, students from Ms. Griffith and Mr. Brennan’s
classes proudly displayed native American costumes, tools, weapons and toys they created. Students, dressed in their colorful outfits, began the program by reading to their parents about the lives, contributions and culture of Native Americans. Following their presentation the students
proudly described their projects, and how they were used by native Americans. Needless to say, parents, teachers, friends and family were all impressed by the student displays. Following the presentation students shared a sumptuous, and colorful, feast prepared by Idle Hour moms.

Wash Kit Project financial grant from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children, provided items the students would package, and later deliver. According to Dr. Cholden, this was a ‘total community effort’ to help the needy. Students wrote little notes and letters to include with each ‘wash kit. Third grade students from Ms. Canzano’s class sorted and put the kits together by placing the items into zip lock bags. Mrs. Chiarelli added, “It is our hope that the students will continue to work together for a common goal, which is to empathize, and be compassionate towards others in need.” Students certainly did work as a team
as they prepared their kits. One observer remarked that the youngsters working on the assembly line reminded her of the Lucille Ball skit, as she packaged candy! Mrs. Chiarelli’s students were diligent and determined to make some neighbors very happy. Additional donations are welcome. Dr. Cholden congratulated Mrs. Chiarelli, Ms. Canzano and each of the generous students that took part in the second annual Bosti Wash Kit project!
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi recognized students from Connetquot High School’s habitat for Humanity Club for raising $4,000 to help Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk build a new home in Mastic Beach for a needy family.
Students also participated in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions program which donated an additional $1,500. Optimum Community is a Cablevision initiative. The students plan to continue fundraising for this cause
for the remainder of the year. As part of the partnership between the Connetquot School District, Optimum Community and habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, the students actually participate in the building process.

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”
and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.
