UNPRECEDENTED COACHING TEAM - The Connetquot High School wrestling room has been renamed the Bill Santoro/Anthony Melfi Wrestling Room after a dedication held for the duo on Dec. 22. Connetquot’s boys’ basketball coach Kyle Black was hoping to get back on the winning side of the ledger as the second half of the season opened with Commack HS visiting the Bohemia campus. The team has been plagued with injuries and covid concerns and coach was hoping that January 4th would give the t-birds the break they needed, but it was not to be.

Commack got off to a 19-9 first quarter lead, and took the win by a final score of 73-58. This night it would be coach Black who was ‘under the weather’! Mike Catalano and Tyler Moore led the T-birds with 18 points apiece, but Commack’s Mike Gitz led all scorers with 30 points. The T-birds did score on six3 point goals with Catalano hitting four and Moore

with two. Dan Youmans (8), Malaki Rogers (6), Ryan Waring (6) and Bobby Elliot (2) also scored for Connetquot. individual records have also been impressive with 113 receiving AllCounty designations, 14 receiving All-State designations, 15 Suffolk County champions, six New York State finalists and two NYS champions. Additionally, 31 former Connetquot High School wrestlers have become wrestling coaches. “They have done this with good old fashioned toughness, consistency, hard work and stamina and staying true to old school principles, while evolving and adapting to modern day issues,” Mr. Melore said about the coaches. “Another word for this is grit. No, gimmick, no shortcuts, no magic. They care more about developing young people than winning.” Coach Santoro told the community, “When you have the horses, you win the race. I have always had the horses and standing in front of me are some of the toughest to take the mat.” He continued, “Winning is nice, but it is great seeing the kids I coached grow up.” Coach Melfi described the renaming of the wrestling room “humbling and unexpected.” He said, “I am doing what I love. Developing kids is the icing on the cake.”

The Connetquot High School wrestling room has been renamed the Bill Santoro/Anthony Melfi Wrestling Room after a dedication held for the duo on Dec. 22. The naming occurred during Alumni Night in which more than 50 alumni wrestlers, who graduated from the program as early as 1962, stood on the perimeter of the wrestling mat in respect for the cherished coaches. Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Peter Melore introduced the alumni and coaches to the community. “There is no better evidence out there as to how special this coaching partnership has been and the impact they have made to so many young people over the years than the fact that so many alumni are proud to have been a part of the program and have come back to support the program,” Mr. Melore said during his introduction. Head coach Bill Santoro has coached Connetquot student-wrestlers for 44 years, making him Long Island’s number one coach in terms of seniority. Coach Santoro was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012. Anthony Melfi has also served as assistant coach for the varsity team for 33 consecutive years. He was Connetquot’s first county champion and a two-time All-State wrestler. No other Connetquot High School coaching duo has worked together for this period of time and, under their partnership, the team has garnered a .728 Dual Meet winning percentage. In the past 17 years, the team has secured 13 league titles and is third on Suffolk County Wrestling’s AllTime Wins list. The team has secured 40 winning season records in 43 years. The athletes’

With less than a minute left in the first half the score was 18 apiece, before the visitors went on an 8 point run that gave Newfield the lead that they would hold onto, for a 55-39 win. Newfield’s Raiyah Reid led all scorers with 28 points, 11 short of Connetquot’s total! Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet

boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas

morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. As 2021 comes to a close, the Middle Country Central School District is so proud of the wonderful students that exceed expectations through their academic achievements throughout the year. For the month of December, the Middle Country School District is honoring Lily Collins, Devany Ngam, Ryan McMurray, and Mehreen Chowdhury as students of the month. “Each month we recognize the outstanding efforts and results of some of our brightest students in the Middle Country Central School District,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “Congratulations to Lily, Devany, Ryan, and Mehreen on all your hard work. You are all so deserving of this recognition.” Lily, a Dawnwood Middle School eighth-grader, is a member of the varsity cheer team and has had leading roles in school musicals. Lily also participates in vocal ensemble, lacrosse, competitive dance and theater productions outside of school. Lily has volunteered her time teaching dance class to younger students. Lily’s overall average for sixth and seventh grade was 97.6. Lily’s average for the first quarter of the 2021 school year was an impressive 98.4. Devaney is a wellrounded eighth-grader at Selden Middle School.

Devaney is an important member of the school’s track and cross-country teams, and is the president of Selden’s math team. She also plans on joining the school’s newly formed photography club. Most impressive, however, was Devaney’s first-quarter report card this year in which she earned perfect 100s in all but one class. In the other – Devaney earned a 99! Ryan is a senior at Centereach High School who has shown immense aptitude in a number of areas. But, above all else, Ryan’s kindness is what garnered the attention of the staff and earned him this month’s nomination for student of the month. Ryan is an active member of Italian Honor Society, the Tri-M Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Ryan is also an integral member of the school’s baseball team and is a gifted member of the Centereach philharmonic orchestra. Academically, Ryan shines just as brightly. He is currently ranked twenty-first in the graduating class of 2021 with a weighted GPA of nearly 100. Mehreen is a senior at Newfield High School, ranked thirteenth in her graduating class. She is maintaining a weighted GPA of 100.4894 and has the potential to graduate in June with more than 40 college credits. In

MEHREEN CHOWDHURY addition to her impressive academics, Mehreen has a wide range of interests and extra-curricular activities she’s actively involved in. She’s a member of the Thespian Honor Society, National Honor Society, captain of the varsity fencing team, Class of 2022 student council treasurer, and president of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society. Mehreen is also a member of the chamber orchestra, select jazz band, pit orchestra, women’s choir, and jazz choir. Outside of school, Mehreen runs the Selden Masjid Youth Leadership and Empowerment seminar which encourages Muslim students to empower themselves in their communities and believe in the change that is possible through their leadership.

Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories. Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations. • The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. Long Island’s largest year-round professional theatrical venue, The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Executive Producers & Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), presents the World Premiere of PUNK ROCK GIRL with book and arrangements by Tony-nominated Long Island Composer Joe Iconis (Broadway’s Be More Chill), arrangements and orchestrations by Rob Rokicki (Broadway’s The Lightning Thief), directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner Worldwide Associate for Book Of Mormon), and in partnership with Lively McCabe Entertainment. It will begin performances on January 20, in advance of its January 22 opening night and will run through February 27, 2022. The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island).

Come on down and be the first to see this new exciting musical!” The cast includes Philippe Arroyo (Broadway: Aladdin), Kayla Catan, Seth Eliser, Jaylan Evans (Regional: The Scottsboro Boys), Kalonjee Gallimore, Ashley LaLonde (Lincoln Center’s The Black Clown), Lauren Marcus (Broadway: Be More Chill), Jackson Mattek, Jordan Leigh McCaskill, Kelly McIntyre (National Tour: A Night With Janis Joplin), Natalie Powers, Mikaela Rada, Brooke Shapiro (Regional: Hairspray), Brad Weatherford.

It’s a new musical featuring a score of popular songs written and made famous by female artists and female-fronted bands including Blondie, Pat Benatar, Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, and more! 16-year-old Angela Quivers is a perfectionist who never takes chances and feels like there’s no place where she belongs … until she meets Proxi, a teenager who pulls her into a world of grungy guitars, shocking secrets, and big, loud, messy emotions. A musical about a young person finding a community and creating her tribe, PUNK ROCK GIRL is a noisy celebration of all things raw and ragged; trashy and heartfelt; familiar and alien.

The creative team includes Music Supervision by Geoffrey Ko, Musical Direction by Jennifer Peacock, Associate Direction and Choreography by Leonard Sullivan, Set Design by Nate Bertone, Costume Design by Jen Caprio, Lighting Design by John Salutz, Sound Design by Carlos Dias Jr and Prop Design by Steven Velasquez, Associate Scenic Designer is Joshua Warner, Associate Costume Designer is Anna Blazer and Heather Neil and Prop Assistant is Courtney Alberto. The Production Stage Manager is Alison Savino, with 1st Assistant Stage Manager Leah V. Pye, and 2nd Assistant Stage Manager /CSM Shannon Stewart. The Casting Director is Michael Cassara, CSA.
