So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and ﬂexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a ﬂurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

These presentations included important information as presented by the heads of science, mathematics, business, English language arts and ENL/foreign languages departments, respectively. “Our goal with this event was to showcase the many great courses and electives

that the upcoming students will be able to take once they attend Connetquot High School,” said Principal Kenneth Costa. Throughout the course of the night, students and their families received a detailed overview of the programs before breaking into groups and speaking with representatives individually.

Visitor from Down Under Through use of a colorful multimedia presentation focused on the Australian culture, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students in Lisa Canzano’s third-grade class recently traveled to the world down under with the help of Australia native Chris

Pitkin. During the presentation, the students learned various facts about Australia, including its location on a map, plant and wildlife population and the history of the original Australian settlers, the Aboriginals.

To visually add to the discussions, Mr. Pitkin brought with him traditional boomerangs and didgeridoos, and offered students the opportunity to learn about the written language of the Aboriginals.

Applications are now being accepted for volunteer charity boxers who will enter training to prepare them for stepping in the ring at the 14th Main Event. Boxing experience is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for

individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Hundreds of men, women and children here on Long Island who are dealing with life’s struggles will be the benefactors. On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;

President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

December Students of the Month The Middle Country Central School District recognized their December Students of the Month at a recent Board of Education meeting. Centereach High School senior Colin Birch, Newfield High School senior Tyler Berns, Dawnwood Middle School sixth grade student Diego Avendano, and Selden Middle School sixth grade student Isabella Yannotti were honored for the many different ways in which they excel. “It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to teach and watch the growth of these four students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “The diligence and heart represented by these four honorees is rare and we are humbled each day, as we watch them act as leaders and role models for their peers. Congratulations on this much deserved achievement.” Centereach High School senior, and December student of the month recipient, Colin Birch was chosen for his remarkable growth throughout his academic career. Starting out as a shy student who struggled with his grades, Colin discovered his strengths in technology courses and began serving as a mentor for his fellow students. Colin has taken and aced every technologyfocused course offered at Centereach High School - including Design and

Drawing Production, Electronics, Computer Repair, Programming and Design, Computer Graphics and C++ Programming. He is also a member of the National Technical Honor Society and the Audio Production BOCES program. Colin is described by his teachers as having “rare, heartfelt sincerity” and is recognized for his positive attitude, his politeness, diligence and kindness. Colin has applied to a variety of tech schools and is awaiting acceptance to study as a computer/audio engineer. Tyler Berns is a senior at Newfield High School. He has the potential to graduate with a total of 30 college credits and a 92.0851 GPA - thirteenth in his class. Tyler is described by Principal Scott Graviano as a “Jack of all trades,” excelling in academics, music and extracurricular activities. Tyler is currently the President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, member of the National Honor Society, the Thespian Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society and the Percussive Honor Society - for which he is a student delegate for the New York State Chapter. He is also a member of the leadership club, President of the Book Club and has been a Varsity Tennis player since 2013. Tyler has put his heart

into excelling in his music studies, and he has been acclaimed by his teachers as the best in his class. He was also selected by the Suffolk County Music Educators Association as a member of the All County Percussion Ensemble, the All County Band and the All County Orchestra. In addition, Tyler has been a percussionist for the New York Youth Symphony, the Sound Symphony Orchestra and was selected as an alternate for the St. Agnes Cathedral Christmas Orchestra. Tyler awaits acceptance from a number of colleges where he will study music performance for percussion. Dawnwood Middle School sixth grade student, and December student of the month, Diego Avendano was chosen for his unbelievable work ethic. After arriving in the United States from El Salvador just over a year ago only speaking Spanish, Diego has almost mastered the English language.
