LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

Raising Funds Connetquot High School senior Marina Duszak continues to assist the Connetquot community with her altruistic efforts. This year, Marina took it upon herself to spearhead a fundraiser with the help of the high school students and staff, and on December

22nd, she presented a check in the amount of $1,986 to Alexis Alpert, community relations coordinator for the MakeA-Wish foundation. Marina has a passion for giving to others and this December she coordinated a well-received fundraiser

to benefit Make-A-Wish, a national organization with a vision of granting the wish of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Through a “wish” ornament drive, Marina inspired her peers and high school staff to

purchase paper ornaments for their homes, trees, offices and classrooms. The ornaments were sold for a $1 each. Additionally, Marina collected more than 2,000 letters to Santa through Make-A-Wish and delivered them to the local Macy’s department store.

A Connetquot High School senior, Marina is a member of the crosscountry team, is the Student Government president, ranks in the top 10 percent of her class, and has survived cancer. Diagnosed with leukemia in her freshman year, Marina

endured almost three years of chemotherapy. In her junior year, the side effects of the medication became less debilitating, allowing her to rejoin the cross-country team, and spend time paying forward good deeds toward her community.

Letters for Jacob A sick child’s request from Maine made its way to Longwood High School, and one class decided to take action. Nine-yearold Jacob Thompson was undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer and requested that people from around the world send Christmas cards and letters. As a sign of compassion and support, the students in Ilene Rubenstein’s High School English class wrote Jacob 46 letters and assembled a scrapbook

which was delivered to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital where Jacob was undergoing treatment. “We wanted to make Jacob as happy as possible, and let him know that there are people out there that care about him,” said senior Gina Parlato. After learning of Jacob’s tragic passing this past November, Gina created a holiday ornament to raise money in Jacob’s memory. Through the support of the Longwood High School Best Buddies Club,

staff and students, more than $450 was donated to the Children’s Oncology Unit at The Barbara Bush Hospital. Gina is a talented artist who has completed numerous art projects throughout the halls of the high school. “The holidays are for good deeds,” explained Gina. “Even though Jacob has passed away, I felt that it was important to do something in his memory.”

Pencil Drawing A special gift presented to Hiawatha Elementary School Principal Kathleen O’Farrell and art teacher Nicole Healey of the Sachem Central School District recently sparked a special conversation about the intricacies of pencil drawing with students in art class.

Yvonne Pineiro, a grandmother of two Hiawatha students and a local artist, presented the school with a detailed pencil drawing of the school’s mascot, the Hiawatha Husky. Pineiro was inspired to draw the husky because of her grandchildren’s love for

their school. Ms. Healey has put the drawing on display in the art room and has used the work to educate each grade level on the art of pencil drawing and the level of difficulty associated with the medium.

Utilizing K h a n A c a d e m y. o r g , students observed how quadratics were applied in the environmental modeling of grass in the Disney Pixar film “Brave.” After watching videos on how the graphic designers incorporated straight lines to create realistic curves, students began to work on their own creations.

Using straight lines to connect a combination of dots, students created various holiday objects, such as a Christmas tree star, a snowman and a poinsettia. During the activity, students also familiarized themselves with popular quadratics vocabulary terms, such as axis, rays, angles and parabolic arches.

Learning Procedure

The Law Enforcement students at the Harry B. Ward Technical Center have recently learned to safely conduct room searches. After learning the proper methods, students repeatedly practice within a simulated environment. The Harry B. Ward Technical Center is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the career and technical education program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. To complete this exercise, tables, desks, and large folding mats were turned on their sides within the classroom to create visual obstructions and potential hiding spots for the pursued. Most of

the lights were turned off to further reduce visibility and doors to adjoining rooms were closed. Students used the procedures they learned to safely and methodically move about the room in search of their targets who were hiding. As a team, students crouched low, cautiously peered around corners, and maintained constant communication with each other as they moved through the room. One acted as the point officer and the other as the cover officer (the point officer takes the lead and conducts the search while the cover officer guards his back). Each was equipped with a flashlight, a rubber gun, and handcuffs. Their

goal was to search the rooms, locate, apprehend, handcuff, and unarm an unknown number of assailants. If a weapon was overlooked during the search, students automatically failed the test. Sachem High School North 10th-grade world language students in the Sachem Central School District put their skills to the test as they presented how-to speeches to their classmates demonstrating assorted activities. Students in Christy Zummo’s Spanish class incorporated the commands learned in

class into their how-to demonstrations. Each speech included an introduction, a list of supplies needed, the steps necessary to complete the project or task and a conclusion. The studentpresenters also included a vocabulary list with English translations to help classmates follow along. Speeches ranged

from how to play a sport to the construction of a craft to how to follow a specific cooking recipe. Along with working on their Spanish commands, the speeches provided students with an opportunity to advance their presentation and public-speaking skills.

Sensible Discoveries Taking learning beyond the classroom, students enrolled in Elizabeth Jonas’ and Linda Pennington’s kindergarten classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School were recently able to explore the world around them using their five senses. With assistance from SENSIBLE DISCOVERIES - To reinforce the five senses, kindergartners from Elizabeth Jonas’ class at Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently engaged in an Donna Waldenburg, a activity about the sense of touch by taking part in a Braille-themed activity. Ms. Waldenburg walked around the room with small containers consisting of prominent, flavorful scents, explaining that the nose is the body’s primary organ for picking up smells. their senses of sight and hearing as they played Simon Says in American Sign Language, and learned how to say “I Love You” in Braille using their sense of touch. Mad for Science Students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently visited by Mad Science of Long Island representative “Ant the Alchemist” for a highly engaging science presentation titled “Up, Up and Away.” Utilizing his energetic personality to get the students excited about the wonder of science, Ant the Alchemist invited student

volunteers to take part in hands-on activities. Along the way, students learned that water pressure increases the further you dive into the ocean, and that air pressure decreases as airplanes rise higher into the air. Additionally, they engaged in activities showcasing that plastic bags begin to rise when heat is applied to its physical structure, car engines run due to reactions in the

combustion chamber, and that structures can actually float if high amounts of air pressure are applied from underneath its base. According to their website, Mad Science of Long Island is a leading science enrichment provider on Long Island, delivering hands-on, unique science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational.

Book Donation

The Middle Country Central School District Teachers Association recently hosted its second annual free book distribution at Centereach High School. Hundreds of students and families looked through and took home donated books. Attendees lined up around the corner to take advantage of the program that was intended to give the gift of reading

to the Middle Country community. “We are proud of our teachers for the work they do with our students inside the classroom and for the beneficial impact they have on the rest of the community outside of the classroom as well,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “For a second consecutive year, the Middle Country Teachers Association is

setting a positive example for our students by teaching the importance of giving back while also helping to facilitate a love for reading.” Through a partnership with First Book and the American Federation of Teachers, the Middle Country Teachers Association was able to collect more than 10,000 books to distribute.

December Students of the Month The Middle Country Central School District announced its December students of the month at its recent Board of Education meeting. Centereach High School senior Alec Kiernan, Newfield High School senior Ryan Murphy, Dawnwood Middle School sixth grade student Alicia Ciauri and Selden Middle School sixth grade student Christopher Richardson were all celebrated for their outstanding academic achievements, abundant extracurricular participation and for providing an overall positive impact on their schools and communities. “Month after month, we are surrounded by incredible students who emulate the positive values and hard work of the entire Middle Country student body,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are thrilled to once again honor students who go above and beyond in the classroom, inside their respective school, and throughout their surrounding c o m m u n i t i e s - a representation of what all Middle Country educators seeks to instill in our students.” Centereach High School senior and December student of the month recipient Alec Kiernan was selected for his academic and athletic success, along with his positive attitude among his peers. Alec

currently maintains a weighted GPA of 99.8 and is set to graduate in June ranked 24th in the class of 2018. Upon graduating, Alec will have completed no less than seven Advanced Placement courses and five more college level classes. Though he was a key member of the school’s football team, Alec’s stellar athletic ability was overshined by his leadership skills. Both his coaches and teammates recognized his innate instincts as a leader, and he was elected captain three years in a row. Due to his hard work in the classroom and on the playing field, Alec is currently deciding where he will be studying and playing collegiate football next fall. Ryan Murphy is a senior at Newfield High School who was selected as student of the month for his academic achievements and constant volunteer work around the community. Ryan has dedicated countless hours to community service through his time as a SPARTAN vocalist at Maryhaven, local nursing homes and the Selden Fire Department’s annual 9/11 memorial ceremony. Ryan has also served as a vital team player in coordinating and managing the successful Newfield Blood Drives that occur in the fall and spring of each school year. Next fall, Ryan is looking

to major in photography at either SUNY Purchase, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Buffalo State or Long Island University. Dawnwood Middle School sixth grade student Alicia Ciauri was selected as the school’s student of the month. Alicia currently holds a GPA of 98.3 and is consistently a recipient of the high honor roll. Her teachers often describe her stellar work ethic; she is always prepared for class and is always willing to help her peers. Alicia is also an active member of both the Service Club and Jazz Band. Above all, the overarching description of Alicia is as a kind, nice and humble student. Christopher Richardson is a sixth grade student at Selden Middle School and was selected student of the month, holding a GPA of 97.3. Christopher, who earned high honor roll in his first quarter in middle school, enjoys science because it combines math with hands-on activities. He has also found time to become a member of Selden Middle School’s student government, the Best Buddies Club and the Jazz Band, where he plays drums. Teachers often acknowledge him as a natural leader which will come in handy as he pursues his dream career of either a chef or President of the United States.

The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted their annual English as a New Language Family Night at Ronkonkoma Middle School, inviting ENL students and families throughout the district for a night full of fun, dancing, delicious food and cultural appreciation.

Members of the Connetquot High School Civic Club volunteered throughout the course of the night, as they hosted an arts and crafts session with the younger students in attendance and assisted with the setup of the evening’s activities. Christina Ladick of the

Connetquot Public Library was also in attendance to share information about all of the services that the library has to offer, and led a workshop for parents titled “Online Access to the Connetquot Public Library.” Mrs. Ladick also provided attendees with a meaningful tutorial on

ENL Family Night library website resources for parents and their children. There were also handouts available that described the ENL program and services that Connetquot Public Library offers. The attendees were also able to enjoy delicious foods, consisting of

elements of different cultures, such as fried rice, empanadas and pizza. “In an increasingly global world, it is important for teachers, administrators, community members, and students to come together to experience each other and learn about various cultures,” said Denise

Hannaoui, Connetquot Central School District Director of ENL/World Languages. “This event is just one of many that has successfully brought us together and I thank all of our ENL teachers who collaborated to bring this wonderful night to fruition.”
