he Eastern Suffolk BOCES Work Experience Program invited Zack Gray, a representative from Level Solar in Ronkonkoma, to give a presentation on solar energy to the students in the trade electric, carpentry and plumbing programs. Students learned how solar energy is produced and how the installation of solar panels is done on residential homes. Those in attendence thoroughly enjoyed this informative lesson.

Student Spotlight OBESITY IN AMERICA Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning
about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. We must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to recreate the lives that we have and the futures that we want.

(Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree
to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did
when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

Apply Today Longwood Central School District participates in the grant-funded New York State Universal PreKindergarten Program. All children who will be 4 years old on or before December 1st, 2015, are eligible to apply for the program. Universal Pre-K is a state funded, 5 half-day a week program pending
state budget approval. Parents are responsible for transporting their child to the program. Applications will be mailed in May, but you must call to be placed on the mailing list. Assessment With Integrity Eastern Suffolk BOCES Education and Information Support Services (EISS) in collaboration with Learner-Centered Initiatives (LCI) held an Assessment Conference at Dowling College that focused on assessing with integrity to support the design, implementation, validation, and refinement of performance assessments. International presenter Giselle Martin-Kniep, Ph.D. from LCI provided the keynote address on Assessing What We Value Most: A Moral Imperative. She stated, “This is an interesting time and a paradoxical time. What do we want students to know, be able to do, and value? We need an assessment system that is congruent and parsimonious. Parsimonious is one of my favorite words because it’s all about doing more with less.”
The conference was held as part of the Teaching is the Core Grant and was extended to district personnel as professional development as they seek to assess and provide students with 21st century skills, problem solving skills, and soft skills that are not easily assessed. EISS is the recipient of the New York State Education Department Teaching is the Core Grant. The proposed plan for the use of the funds is to work with the participating school districts to improve the quality of local assessments that are currently in use, while simultaneously reducing the number of local assessments that are perceived not to inform instruction. EISS Administrative Coordinator Ellen Moore said, “The purpose of the conference is for us to roll up our sleeves and

ESBOCES School Social Worker Jennifer FarnumWeber said, “The goal of the fair is to make connections between school districts and outside community agencies. We hope to fit the needs of our students and our component school districts to the best of our ability.” Jennifer’s role is to partner with the community and outside
agencies to keep social workers and psychologists up to date with the most recent trends. Program Administrator Elizabeth Melichar said, “It’s never too early for parents and schools to think about transitioning their child/student. In essence, the social workers make the connections. They are the conduit to give parents names and information about services and programs. As part of the New York State Education Department regulations, we need to provide parent training and education on a regular basis. This fair is a perfect forum.” More than fifty representatives from day habilitation programs, group homes, respite programs, service
coordination, and financial planning services were on hand to provide important information to attendees. Herb and Regina Johnson from Westhampton Beach attended the fair on behalf of their eighteen-yearold son who has autism. They were looking for guardianship information but after visiting all of the tables, they had two bags filled with brochures, pamphlets, business cards, and more. Mr. Johnson said, “The fair was very beneficial. Everything was here, all in one place. We got very useful information about social security, and now we know what we need to do, where to go, and who to talk to for our son.”

Training Seminar On January 7th, the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter presented its first “Dogs Playing for Life” seminar, an introduction to a training program for shelter dogs featuring canine play groups.
The program, which has been introduced to more than 50 shelters across the United States and Canada, utilizes play groups as an assessment, enrichment, training and adoption enhancement tool.
The goal of the program is to demonstrate how play groups can improve the quality of life for dogs and the people who work and volunteer at shelters.

Parking Sticker Sale The Town of Brookhaven Department of Parks, Recreation and Sports, and Cultural Resources has announced the pre-season sale of the 2015 Seasonal Resident Parking Stickers at selected locations throughout the town. Paying Tribute a fire in his home. He was instrumental in evacuating his family and his neighboring condominium residents from a rapidly developing dangerous fire. A fresh start to celebrate the New Year, the Jaramillo-Marquez family joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk to celebrate the beginning of construction on their future home in Bellport. Demolition crews led the efforts, removing the previous abandoned, uninhabitable structure and preparing the land for the affordable home build. “It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community,” stated Legislator Kate Browning. “Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to become homeowners.” The property was transferred to Habitat Suffolk by way of legislation from Suffolk County to the Town of Brookhaven and through a partnership and support of Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward P. Romaine. “This blighted property will soon be transformed into a new home for the Jaramillo Marquez family thanks to the Town’s partnership with the County, Habitat for Humanity and Island Outreach,” Romaine said. “We will continue to work together so home ownership can be a reality for working families, while at the same time improving the quality of life for the neighbors who have had to live near these eyesores for many years.” For 25 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered over 165 families to achieve their dreams of homeownership through our affordable housing program. Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 12-15 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home.
