Members of the Centereach community, students and faculty showed up to watch students transform into the famous characters and tell the well-known tale. Audience members even wore costumes of their favorite Cinderella characters. A great time was had by all those in attendance.

Over 300 members of the community came for manicures, paraffin wax hand treatments, haircuts, blow-outs, and styling. The event raised over $1,500 and over 450 lbs. of food was donated. Constance Borny of Riverhead said she saw the event listed in her local newspaper and decided to come down for a haircut. “The students were very nice. They showed off the skills they are learning.
I enjoyed the experience especially knowing that my donation was going to a good cause.” Cosmetology Teacher Carolyn McKillop said, “It’s a win-win situation for the students and the community. The students have the opportunity to display their talents, practice their skills and customer relations, and it is good will to the community.”

40 Under 40 Selected Stony Brook University has named the members of its second annual 40 Under Forty alumni recognition program. The University will celebrate these early career high achievers at an awards event on Tuesday, January 26th, at The Edison Ballroom in New York City. Selected from a diverse nominee pool of Stony

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.
Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home
on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

SCHOLAR ATHLETE NAMED - Sean Rausch, a senior at Longwood High School, was recently named a News 12 Long Island/Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar Athlete. MVP of the county football championship game, Sean also captained the Lions to a Long Island championship and is an all-league baseball player. Besides being an athletic all-star, he is a member of four honor societies and is ranked in the top 2% of Longwood’s graduating class of 617 students. He scored 2120 on the SAT, with a perfect score in the math section. He looks forward to attending Hofstra in the fall.

Special Career Education students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Health Related Occupations (HRO) Program at Islip Career Center in Oakdale are involved in an internship at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ronkonkoma. They were invited by General Manager Ross Harrison. The internship opportunity at the Hilton Garden Inn is a crosstraining experience for the students. HRO Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “In the first year of the HRO program, the students are learning how to become professionals and learning
the specific skills to work in various areas of a hospital; they are not necessarily working with patients.” The internship at the Hilton Garden Inn mirrors the learning experience in a hospital environment, except there are no patients; rather there are guests who need attention and service. Each student does a six-week rotation which includes working in the laundry, housekeeping, kitchen, dietary, bussing tables, waitressing, front desk, and environmental services. Kroupa said, “The hotel has allowed the students to decorate the front lobby
which is part of recreation activities, much like the students would do in a hospital environment.” Amanda, a student from Central Islip UFSD, likes working in the kitchen. She said, “I especially like the part of doing the dishes. It’s fast paced and it keeps me busy.” This year, ESBOCES is partnering with students from the Brentwood UFSD. Kroupa said, “The ESBOCES students will be mentoring the Brentwood students in the areas of time management, how to get their job done, how to be respectful, and how to be a good employee.”

HOLIDAY SHOP FUN - Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed Santa to campus to meet more than 50 students, 5-10 years old, and do some holiday shopping. Cherokee Street Elementary School ParentTeacher Association (PTA) representatives Elaine Beisel and Jessica Giel welcomed more than 100 parents, students and teachers to browse through the holiday shop while enjoying holiday music and complimentary hot chocolate. Students were invited to take pictures with Santa and ask him about life on the North Pole.
