January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation
Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.
Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.
This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is!

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Quitting smoking is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of
Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn't when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a sevenweek course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of tobacco product dependence. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine

“Heart Attack” Noodles By Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York
Don’t let the name of this dish scare you, but we do recommend splurging on this one as a once in a while treat! For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. This dish was always a big hit!” *Editor’s Note: Try serving with a side of sauteed greens for a balanced meal
What You Will Need:
1 Bag of Egg Noodles 1 Lb. of Fatty Bacon (you’ll need the fat for flavor) Fine Bread Crumbs - plain is best
Preparation:
Prepare Egg Noodles and set aside Cook bacon until crispy and set aside Pour warm bacon fat over egg noodles Crumble bacon and add to noodles Add in fine bread crumbs until all bacon fat is absorbed (you can eyeball it)

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to
LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,
my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

community’s fundraising efforts, a check valued at more than $6,000 was presented to Make-A-Wish Community Relations Coordinator Alexis Alpert. Connetquot High School graduate Marina Duszak, along with her mother Patty Duszak, brother Joe Duszak and the school’s Interact Club, were instrumental in raising funds for Make-A-Wish as they’ve held an ornament drive for the past few years in celebration of the holiday season. Diana was joined by her family members, student-members of the Connetquot High School Interact Club, the Duszak Family, and fellow Connetquot High School
students when she learned Make-A-Wish granted her wish and would meet WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair at the WWE Live Holiday Tour at Nassau Coliseum on Dec. 27, 2018. All in attendance were thrilled to see Diana’s wish fulfilled, and rounds of applause thundered throughout the room in support of her. Arduino Boards Eighth-grade students enrolled in Anthony Carbanaro’s and Nathan Giagios’s technology classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently afforded the opportunity to tinker with the Arduino program, which is reinforcing computer coding skills of students throughout the
nation. Utilizing the physical programmable circuit board known widely as the “microcontroller,” the students plugged into their computers and ran software which allowed them to easily upload computer code to the board itself. The Arduino Boards
are fascinating pieces of technology which are able to read inputs such as light on a sensor, a finger on a button or a Twitter message, and turn it into an output, such as activating a motor, turning on an LED and publishing content online.

For those students looking to build a repertoire of professional skill sets prior to applying to colleges and universities, Connetquot High School is now offering a brandnew course, Advanced Placement Capstone, for the 2018-19 academic year. According to the College Board, AP Capstone is a diploma-based program based on two yearlong AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research, the first of which being AP Seminar. These courses are designed to complement other AP courses that the AP Capstone student may take as well as enrich their diverse skill set. Instead of teaching specific subject knowledge, AP Seminar and AP Research use an interdisciplinary
approach to develop the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management and presentation skills students need for collegelevel work. With assistance from instructor Melissa Moynihan, the students are currently in the fivemonth span of their AP Capstone Seminar Exam, completing two parts in the classroom setting, whereas the final component will take place during AP finals week later this school year. During class time, the students brainstormed on topics they were interested in learning more about, and were then able to sample their selected topics amongst their peers. The selected topics included women’s rights,
environmental concerns, immigration, mental illness, education and human rights. While breaking down these topics, the students were asked to address the points of interest, discuss further inquiries toward the topics and ultimately come to a consensus based on the information presented before them. Along the way, the students utilized multiple tools to assist with their research, including Google Chromebooks, collaboration boards and various texts. Additionally, they were asked to write an analytical essay based on one chosen topic prior to showcasing a practice multimedia presentation discussing what they learned based on their discussions.
Exploring Computer Science Throughout the month of December, students across the Sachem Central School District have been exploring computer science through participation in a diverse collection of coding activities offered by the worldwide Hour of Code initiative. For elementary school students, Hour of Code acts as an introductory experience to coding in which students become familiar with basic computer science terminology and explore the prevalence of code in everyday life. Students
learned how algorithms act as a series of steps to complete a task by participating in an activity that outlined each exact step needed to brush their teeth. At Lynwood Avenue Elementary School, the concept of algorithms were reinforced for kindergarten students as they played code hopscotch, following the instructions of labeled floor squares to reach the end of the path. Students around the district also utilized laptops to access additional block-coding activities on the Scratch coding website and
HourofCode.com. Students at Sachem high schools also used Scratch coding to program interactive stories with block coding on a more intricate level. Choosing from the numerous commands available, students creatively weaved together a custom animated story. As part of the coding activities, students learned about the countless computer science career opportunities available to them in a variety of industries.
Showcasing Circus Skills grade students worked for two weeks in their physical education classes to learn the special “circus” skills required to entertain their fans. Connetquot Marine Visit Private First-Class U.S. Marine and Connetquot High School alumna Lauren Sherer recently returned to the OakdaleBohemia Middle School to visit with a few of her former teachers and surprise her sister in class this past December. Lauren’s sister, Brooke, who was completely unaware of the visit, was overwhelmed with joy when her older sister stepped foot into her social studies class taught by Jonathan Agatstein. Mr. Agatstein displayed a video about the history and traditions of the U.S. Marine Corps during Lauren’s visit, and she then answered students’ questions which ranged
from the types of training she underwent, to makeup and hair styles that are regulated while she is in uniform. PFC Sherer graduated from Connetquot High School in June 2018, and three days later she was headed for Parris Island Recruit Depot in South Carolina. The 12-week training program turns recruits into a fighting force and earns each of them the title of U.S. Marine when they receive their Eagle, Globe and Anchor. It was a wonderful visit home for Lauren, and even more enjoyable for Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Principal Susanne Bailey and Lauren’s former
teachers who remember a young and shy little girl, who blossomed into a confident and highly trained member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Additionally, while Lauren was on holiday leave at home, she had the chance to visit Connetquot High School as a recruiter, answering questions from graduating seniors who had an interest in knowing more about the military branch. Lauren will be headed to Mississippi for additional training in the area of Aviation Supply, and is hoping to be assigned to a base on the California coast after her training is CONNETQUOT MARINE VISIT - Physical education teacher Patricia Stein, complete.
