The Brookhaven Town Division of Women’s Services is seeking nominations for outstanding women of Brookhaven. Community groups, businesses and individuals are being asked to nominate women they believe are deserving of special recognition for their outstanding service to the community as a professional or volunteer. Eligible candidates must live or work in Brookhaven Town and all nominations should include a resume or equivalent document and two letters of recommendation. Connetquot Champions The board of education meeting on Dec. 10 was full of Connetquot spirit as two teams were recognized for impressive accomplishments in their respective areas. The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team won their third New York State Championship title in five years and the varsity cheerleading team was named the UCA Regional Champions. Girls volleyball coach Justin Hertz and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams started off the evening by presenting certificates of recognition to each of the players. Multiple elected officials were also in attendance to present the team with proclamations recognizing their commitment and performance, including New York State senators Phil Boyle and Monica R. Martinez and Suffolk County legislators Tom Cilmi and William Lindsay. In addition, Julia Patsos, a senior co-captain on the team, was acknowledged as a News 12 Scholar Athlete and received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her impressive performance on and off the court. Varsity cheerleading coach Kelly Unterweiser rounded out the evening when she proudly presented her team with certificates of recognition for being named the UCA Regional Champions. The cheerleading team is now eligible to compete in the UCA Nationals in February 2020.

Thinking Money for Kids Thinking Money for Kids is a new multimedia experience for children ages 7 to 11, as well as their parents, caregivers and educators. The interactive exhibit in Middle Country Public Library’s Museum Corner uses games, activities and a fun storyline to help children understand what money is, its function in society, money choices and money values, such as fairness, responsibility and charitableness. The Middle
Country Public Library (MCPL) in Centereach has been selected to host this traveling exhibit created by the American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The exhibit will be on display in the Museum Corner through Jan. 27, 2020. Fun financial literacy themed programs are being offered to students and their families in December and January. Students Host Holiday Craft Fair After working diligently for several weeks to craft handmade signs, ornaments and door decorations, Connetquot High School students in Danielle Orobello’s class opened the doors on their third annual Holiday Craft Fair.
“The students learned important skills about creating and running a business,” said Ms. Orobello. “We are so proud of all their hard work.” During the fair, the students ran all aspects of the business and members of

Growing A Garden Of Nutrition Duffield Elementary School students are learning the importance of proper nutrition and economic sustainability thanks to a tower garden initiative coordinated by Youth and Family Services Coordinator Joanne Pisani, M.S., L.M.H.C. horticulturists, planting, cultivating and harvesting the bounty from the garden, which includes kale, lettuce and various other produce. Through lessons with Ms. Pisani, the students are learning that eating healthy foods can help to prevent and revers disease and that plant foods are the matrix for cells to grow healthy. Following each harvest, the students are treated to a “salad party” in class where they get to taste
test the different items grown and even take some home to share with their families. Prior to this year, the tower garden was used in fifth and third grade. “Our long-term goal would be to have in Tower in every classroom,” said Ms. Pisani. “In addition, we will make our courtyard a green grow space where we can grow additional vegetables in the warmer months and donate to the Duffield Community.”

Fifth Grader Wins Scholastic Writing Contest Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth grader Brooke Bartell has been named a winner of the Storyworks “Goose Content” sponsored by Scholastic. Brooke entered the 2019 contest by responding to the question of what she thought would happen in the read-aloud play/ fable “The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg” if the main characters had
learned their lesson before destroying the goose. She was challenged to rewrite the last scene of the story, showing what the characters realized and what actions they took instead. “We loved your thoughtful revision of the scene regarding the changes the Boyds made if they had learned their lesson,” said Lauren
Tarshis, editor-in-chief, in a letter to Brooke. “You included stage directions, appropriate emotion and realistic dialogue. We especially enjoyed your strong closing and positive message.” As a winner, Brooke received a copy of “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin.
Circle Of Dance Showcases Students’ New Skills
First grade students at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently performed several choreographed dances for an audience of family and friends as part of the Circle
of Dance program. During the program, students learned essential dance skills, such as balance, coordination and flexibility, while memorizing each of their individualized dance routines.
Working together through eight practice sessions, students also learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration while working to perfect their routines.

As part of the immersive experience, students learned many real-life elements of marketing and management, beginning with MetLife’s sponsorship deals with Pepsi and Ver-
izon. They then learned how the franchises did their advertising and publicity from the 1920s and how it has evolved for today’s market. Students also learned how the stadium was designed and constructed, including how they convert the stadium from the Giants to Jets between games. Additionally, tour guides shared in-depth information on professional sports, college-level sports, hosting special events such as the
Super Bowl, and revenue MetLife generates from hosting lavish weddings, bar mitzvahs, sweet 16s and other private events. As the tour progressed, students visited key areas of the stadium, including different types of clubs and suites available to ticket holders, the planning room for Super Bowl XLVIII, the outside of the New York Giant’s locker room and the sidelines of the field.

Celebrating Coding Week Connetquot Central School District elementary students worked to enhance their coding skills as they celebrated Computer Science Week in early December. At Idle Hour, fifth grade students worked with Computer Science and Engineering teacher Patrick Brennan to write code for controlled movements using the kidOYO hatch program while first graders completed an unplugged activity, discussing movement codes by walking through a life-size maze designed based on the book “Rosie’s Walk”. They then had the chance to code Beebot robots through a smaller-scaled maze. The project not only touched upon the computer science skills they were learning, but
also reinforced key English Language Arts terms as they were asked to use the correct preposition to describe their movements. At Slocum, third grade students worked with Jill Ferraro to discuss introductory blocky code and then used a program called maze code in kidOYO to create their own code. Students at the district’s other elementary schools also engaged in similar activities. The celebration week was not the first-time Connetquot students had a chance to take part in such activities, as the district’s curriculum includes computer science and engineering activities as part of its innovation lab initiative. This project enables K-5 students to work with a dedicated computer science and
engineering teacher on a rotating basis and up to 18 sessions throughout the year. Within the labs, activities vary based on grade level, with K-2 primarily being unplugged and grades 3-5 being plugged activities that scaffold based on skill, but all promote critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving. Teachers use various devices, such as Legos, Ozobots, Beebots, maze code and, new this year, kibo robots, to provide the content rich tradition. The district was on the forefront of introducing this type of robust program at the elementary level, as it is anticipated that New York State will be adopting new computer science standards for grades K-12 in the near future.

Longwood Middle School fifth-grade teacher Jennifer Cook has been named the Long Island Nets Teacher of the Month for her excellence in the classroom, commitment to education and the community, leadership abilities, and dedication to students. Nominated by fifthgrade teacher Michael Felicetta, Mrs. Cook was
recently recognized during a basketball game at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Mr. Felicetta stated that Mrs. Cook is the type of teacher that inspires others and is pleased to nominate her for the Teacher of the Month Award. “Mrs. Cook thinks that the magic she creates in the classroom is just part of her everyday job,” said Mr.

LOGUERCIO WELCOMES SANTA CLAUS - Recently, children of all ages came to meet jolly Saint Nick during the Town’s annual “Santa Comes to Longwood Estate” celebration. This fun-filled, family event included sleigh rides and pony rides, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts, popcorn and a visit with Santa and his “Chief Elf,” Councilman Loguercio (left). Guests also enjoyed the “winter wonderland” inspired model train display with a spectacular Disney World feature for all to enjoy. How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression
early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to. • Engage in your life. If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression. Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy. • Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to
become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. Developing good coping and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of depression episodes. • Find the right therapist.
