Shredding Events Liaison to the Department of Waste Management said, “After the holidays is the perfect time to hold a paper shredding and e-waste recycling event and I urge all residents to do their part for the environment by dropping off their old electronics and paper. By participating, they can help make Brookhaven a better place to live.” Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who represents Council District 2, where Rose Caracappa Senior Center is located said, “Our last e-waste event at Rose Caracappa, was a huge success with over 15,000 pounds collected. We should all make recycling our New Year’s resolution and this is a great way to get started.” Residents can also drop off old electronic devices all year round at the resident e-waste drop-off site at the Brookhaven Town Landfill, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. Starting January 6th,

residents can dispose of their e-waste at the Manorville Compost Facility, located on Papermill road in Manorville. Drop off Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Documents brought to the shredding event will be dumped into a 65-gallon container and then into the shredder, enabling each participant to witness the secure destruction of sensitive papers. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags. Documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other contaminants such as rubber bands. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center is located at 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Tim Mazzei and Councilwoman Bonner announced today that the Town will hold two special “post-holiday” residential shredding and e-waste drop-off events for residents to recycle their old paper documents and safely dispose of unused electronic devices. The events will be on Saturday, January 11th at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville and Saturday, January 18th at Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mt. Sinai. “Many residents will be getting new electronic items for Christmas and we can help them dispose of the old ones in a way that is not harmful to the environment,” said Supervisor Romaine. “These events will also give people a chance to clean out their closets, basements and garages to recycle their papers. It’s all part of the Town’s efforts to encourage residents to recycle more in the new year. Councilman Mazzei, who serves as Town Board

ENJOYING THE FIVE SENSES - On Wednesday, October 30th, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School kindergarten students joined teachers and volunteer parents, for a morning of activities designed around the five senses. Kindergarten teachers divided the youngsters into groups to work with the volunteer parents in the classrooms. A variety of exercises, had the students rotate from one group to another, to enjoy activities to enhance their senses of sight, taste, touch, smell and sound. Students could be heard giggling with excitement as they traveled between the classrooms, interacting with their classmates, parents and teachers.

and Olympusat. This year the essay required students to name a Latino, past or present, with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why in 500 words or less. Ms. Sarwar wrote about singer and song writer Selena, who was

Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Reviving The Rivalry

As the regularly scheduled football season came to an end, the Connetquot School District middle school coaches shared their appreciation with their players and fans, then focused on the last game of the season. They would all look forward to the newly revived cross-district football game between the T-birds of Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS), and the T-Birds of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS), to be played for the first time ‘under the lights’ at Connetquot High School! Connetquot Athletic Director Mark Dellecave and Connetquot Board of Education Trustee Ted Imbasciani were on hand for this highly anticipated game.

On Thursday, November 7th, RMS Coaches Pope & Bradley along with OBMS Coaches Oldis & Burger met on the beautifully maintained varsity football field at Connetquot High School in Bohemia. The coaches, and loyal, vocal fans, joined the cheerleaders in encouraging the T-birds to play their best, and demonstrate their community pride. Connetquot High School Varsity Football Coach Mike Hansen gathered both teams together prior to the opening kickoff to congratulate them on their respective seasons, and encourage them to play their best against many of the same boys who will be their teammates as 9th graders next season. At a

distance, fans could hear the coach encourage the players to hit hard, then help their opponents up, then go back to hitting hard again. This would be the first cross-district game to be played on the new artificial turf field. While RMS scored the first points of the game, it would be OBMS that would come out with the final winning score. Despite the outcome, the T-Birds gave their best effort, did hit hard, and at the end of the game lined up to shake hands and congratulate one another in a spirit of mutual respect. The fans and coaches enjoyed watching their boys play hard, make them proud, and provide a sense of optimism for the future of Connetquot football.

Community Support

Mrs. Bridgette Wilson, Principal of Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School in Ronkonkoma recently congratulated her 5th grade students for their support of UNICEF. According to veteran teacher Kristine Abbinanti, “The fifth grade students at Cherokee have been studying the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ and the services that UNICEF provides to children around the world.” Cherokee’s 5th graders consider themselves to be ‘global citizens’

and understand that they should play a role in improving living conditions for all children. With that in mind these students participated in the time-honored tradition of collecting coins on Halloween to donate to UNICEF. The students collected $750, which will be matched, dollar for dollar, by UNICEF. Their efforts will result in an overall contribution of $1,500 to help improve the lives of children somewhere in the world. Mrs. Abbinanti said that this donation could provide a pump to supply

clean water to a village, as well as vaccinate over 350 children from disease. Mrs. Abbinanti is very proud of the Cheroke 5th graders for their generous efforts on behalf of UNICEF. She has told her students that “Former U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy once said that, “The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better.” For sure, Cherokee students have taken that concept to heart. Congratulations, and thank you, to the thoughtful 5th grade students of the Cherokee Street Elementary School.

Alumni Basketball Connetquot High School boys basketball coach Bob Drzal brought together alumni members of the of the program’s ‘Golden Years’ on December 28th. Thirty former ‘Thunderbirds’ representing six decades beginning in 1966, met at the Connetquot HS Fieldhouse for the 3rd annual Alumni Classic. Drzal, along with long-time assistant coaches Ralph Thomas and Keith Cussmano, brought back former student-athletes who expected to relive their high school playing days, but really wanted to catch up with former teammates and coaches. Despite the graying hair, expanding waistlines, and reluctant leg muscles, the 2013 Alumni Basketball players entertained their loud, and loving, fans with (semi) aggressive defense, long jump shots and somewhat sharp passes. The only ingredient that seemed to be missing were cheerleaders, but hopefully their alumni cheerleaders will take part next year! The supportive crowd of moms, dads, wives, children and significant others, cheered their ‘boys’ on, and enjoyed a laugh or two as a few shots fell short of the

rim, or rebounders came up with the ball while standing and that the team photo would be prominently displayed flat-footed! The game was actually exciting as time ran on the program’s Wall of Fame! down, with 2004 graduate Jason Pristupa being fouled as Following the game, handshakes and hugs all around, time ran out, and his team down two! Prestupa stepped players made plans to meet up at Cavanagh’s Restaurant in Bayport to finish catching up with their old teammates. A minimum 500-word essay is required, with a maximum of 600 words. The essay is entitled How I Have Made A Contribution To My Community.
