Coronavirus leaves many LIers without jobs, many now eligible for public insurance. Bi-lingual health insurance enrollers who specialize in assisting adults and children who are blind or disabled or anyone over the age of 65 are just a phone call away. The assistance, provided by the not-for-profit agency Nassau-Suffolk Hospital

Council (NSHC), is free. Those who have lost their jobs during this pandemic may be eligible for Medicaid, and that provides some measure

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza raffle, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday meals and gifts to struggling families. Ongoing toy drives have enabled the Foundation to send gifts to children at its core hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. To mark Childhood Cancer Month in September, anyone who made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year; An inperson 5K race in addition to another virtual race later in

Old clothes can be dropped off at a designated site, and the Foundation would be paid per pound of clothing. Another BakeLESS-Cake Sale is in the works for next summer. The Foundation is also planning restaurant fundraisers, in which Sarah Grace would be the featured charity on certain dates at local restaurants. Supporters would be notified of those dates to dine out at these restaurants and the Foundation would receive a percentage of the sales that night. Three-ply, washable face masks with the Sarah Grace Foundation logo continue to be sold on the website, www. thesarahgracefoundation. org. The masks are adjustable and available in adult and child sizes. The cost is $13 for an adult mask and $12 for a children’s’ mask. “The supporters of the Sarah Grace Foundation allow us to continue our mission in aiding children and their families during such a difficult time,” said Foundation President

Matthew Weippert, Sarah’s father. “We are touched by the generosity of so many people, from Sarah’s hometown to friends across the country. Thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers, the Sarah Grace Foundation is overcoming the obstacles of the pandemic and still providing for our children” The Foundation continues to think outside the box, working closely with pediatric cancer social workers to provide optimum assistance to these families. Throughout the pandemic, the Foundation has not had to turn down any referrals and has continued to sponsor core programs including The Escape Hatch, Gabe’s Chemo Duck, The Bead Program and Sarah Grace’s Book Angels as well as financial aid for meals, transportation, funerals, holiday gifts and so much more. The Connetquot Central School District chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society inducted 37 new members to its organization on Nov. 30, held in the Connetquot High School auditorium. The ceremony commenced with an introduction of officers Stacy Vilca (president), Ashley Spillane (vice president), Emily Mohr (treasurer), and Oishi Dey (secretary) by adviser Christopher Dolce. The officers gave a brief history of the national organization, its purpose, as well as the history of mathematics. The annual Dimes for Dezy campaign held at Cherokee Street Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District raised $1,215 to assist those struggling with cancer. For two weeks, students emptied their change into a large water jug in memory of the late Connetquot resident Matt

DiStefano (Dezy) and the Dezy Strong Foundation. With assistance from teacher Cindy Campenella, Matt DiStefano’s children, third grader Giuliana DiStefano and first grader Gio DiStefano, emptied the donation jug each day and sorted the money collected. Each Thursday, students wore their Dezy Strong

shirts, Mr. DiStefano’s former cancer treatment day, and decorated the lobby wall with ribbon pledges to demonstrate their own strength and their support of the annual fundraiser. “We are proud to continue the legacy and be a part of something to help our community,” Ms. Campenella said.

Northwell Staff Packs Over 2,000 Holiday Gifts For Youngsters In Need With holiday music blasting overhead, dozens of Northwell Health employees gathered together for a marathon gift-wrapping session to ensure that school-age children enjoy a happy holiday season. “I am so proud of each Northwell employee and all of our community partners who made this joyful event possible,” said Edward Fraser, vice president of Community Relations at Northwell. “Today, literally hundreds of our team members joined together to wrap thousands of gifts for children in the communities we serve. It is our belief that no child

should be denied the gift of joy at the holidays.” Through an on-line platform operated by Northwell’s nonprofit project partner, Supplies for Success, employee donations were used to provide art supplies and other gifts for different age categories. No contribution was too great or too small. And, the results are impressive: more than $40,000 was collected for this worthy cause. All the wrapped gifts will be distributed to families who cannot afford them in in four Long Island communities (Brentwood, Bay Shore, Freeport, Hempstead) as well as

locales in Manhattan, Westchester and Staten Island. Along with the gift, the final item placed in each bag was a hand-written, holiday message by the staff member who packed it. At the bottom of their bags, students will find such joyful messages as, “Happy holidays,” or simply, “Enjoy!” The Northwell “elves” who participated in the gift-wrapping marathon, along with Mindy Richenstein, founder and president of Supplies for Success, said that the motto of the day was, “All children deserve the gift of joy at the holidays!”

Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Bank of America Names New York Marine Rescue Center a 2021 Neighborhood Builder® to Support Ecological Conservation Efforts on Long Island organizations across the U.S. The program continues to be the nation’s largest investment into nonprofit leadership development. NYMRC has seen an increased need for marine rehabilitation services as changing ocean temperatures disrupt marine environments, while experiencing a decrease in volunteers due to coronavirus. Being one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the region, during the 2020/2021 cold stun season, the NYMRC took in an additional 29 sea turtles from network partners due to limited space within the network. Additionally, the center is expanding its educational programs to reach schools not only on Long Island but in Florida and Puerto Rico, expanding knowledge of marine ecosystems and inspiring young people to participate in conservation efforts.
