Students across grade levels at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently attended a special assembly that promoted peace throughout their school community and beyond. As part of the event, each student at Waverly Elementary School was asked to write an essay on what peace means to them. Then, during the assembly, several students were selected to read their
essays to fellow classmates, allowing the students to reflect on the ideas of their peers. Continuing the connection to promoting peace throughout Waverly, the students organized a fundraiser to benefit The Team Jesse Foundation, which provides education and support to families of fallen soldiers in honor of Staff Sgt. Jesse Williams. The students sold Team Jesse bracelets and presented the money
they raised to the parents of Kevin Mincio, founder of The Team Jesse Foundation. To conclude the event, all students wrote pledges on how they can make Waverly Elementary a better place. They then walked outside the school to plant daffodil bulbs that will bloom into beautiful flowers in the spring, reminding each student of their promises to promote peace.

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family
Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Students Tune Into STEAM Sounds
The science of sound was on display during a recent activity at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as fifth grade students in Tara Sigilo’s class rotated between five stations in the building’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and
mathematics) room. During the expansive lesson on music and sound, students rotated between stations that included activities such as building a harp with straws and rubber bands, determining which surface causes the greatest vibration with a tuning fork and hitting a drum with
different drum sticks to see which material would cause the most disruptive vibration. The lesson served as a creative opportunity for students to explore vibration, reverberation and sound waves through engaging hands-on design challenges and observation-based tasks.
Lessons On Electricity A recent assembly program for sixth grade students at Samoset Middle School in the Sachem Central School District showcased important energy-saving skills and lessons for minimizing the waste of natural resources.
The presentation, “The Resource Force,” by PSEG Long Island and The National Theatre for Children, led students on an engaging adventure into conserving energy during everyday tasks. Additionally, the presenta-
tion explored what energy is, the uses of energy and how much energy is wasted. The timely presentation served as a reinforcement to recent curriculum lessons on energy.

DMV Urges New Yorkers To Prepare For Winter Driving Conditions The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) joined today in offering tips to winterize your vehicle and to adjust to driving in more challenging weather conditions. Drivers are also reminded that they can now install snow tires on their vehicles. vehicle is ready for the winter, GTSC recommends asking yourself a series of questions about its preparedness: How’s the tread on your vehicles’ tires? Is the recommended amount of antifreeze in the radiator? Is the windshield washer reservoir full? If you have been driving on salted and sanded roads, have you cleaned off your lights and windows? Will the heater and defroster clear icy and fogged windows? And do you have enough gas just in case you get stuck in slow moving traffic? When you’re ready to start driving, here are some tips to follow: Before moving your
car, be certain to remove all snow and ice from it including the top of the vehicle’s roof. Snow and ice flying off your car can cause driving distractions for you and other drivers. It could hit and damage other vehicles or cause a crash. Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows. Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory. Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions. Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction
in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide. Familiarize yourself with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather. Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary. When sleet, freezing rain or snow begin to fall, remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses will freeze first. Be aware that slippery spots may remain after snow is removed. The National Highway Safety Administration also offers winter driving tips. Included in the tips is to be sure your vehicle has the right supplies: Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper. Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, in case
your vehicle gets stuck in the snow. Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices such as flares and emergency markers. Blankets for protection from the cold. A cell phone with charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine (for longer trips or when driving in lightly populated areas). Motorists are urged to check 511NY before traveling. The free travel information system is accessible 24 hours per day by calling 511 or visiting www.511NY.org. The service provides real-time traffic conditions and links to information about air, rail and transit services. The 511NY website features a winter travel
advisory system, with real-time travel reports and a color-coded map indicating which state roads are snow covered, ice covered, wet, dry, or closed to help drivers determine if travel is advisable. The system provides updated snow and ice conditions for interstates and other heavily traveled roads, as reported by snowplow operators.

Over 35 college lacrosse players traded their sticks for Santa hats to give children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities a Christmas to remember. Amidst studying for finals and training in the off- season, the Farmingdale State College lacrosse team shopped for over 100 gifts, purchased them and wrapped them to put smiles on the faces of students at AHRC Suffolk’s Seiff Educare Center. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now and a lot of team members who graduate come back to do it” senior and team captain John McMahon said. Santa and Mrs. Claus
greeted the kids, who range in age from 3 to 21-years, and hand delivered a gift to each of them to tell them they had been a good boy or girl this year. Students also received lacrosse shirts with head coach Sean Chamberlain saying “it’s all for the kids.” Giving to others is something Coach Chamberlain learned as a child: “My mother always gave to charities and when she passed away I wanted to do something to carry on her spirit of generosity.” Su Roesler, who is the Education Coordinator at the Educare Center says “anyone can drop off toys, but to see the joy in the players’ eyes as they spend

time going classroom to classroom, interacting with the students and learning about their unique abilities, is the most rewarding part.” About AHRC Suffolk: AHRC Suffolk is a not-forprofit organization which provides programs and services to children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities throughout Suffolk County. Currently more than 2,500 people receive educational, vocational, residential, employment, and respite services through AHRC’s forty-two facilities.
