but in the true spirit of the holiday season, they brought a different kind of spirit on Thursday, December 19th during a planned visit that was set up with Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Child Life Program. As they mingled and played with patients, the

players got a chance to hand out presents and teeshirts, shoot some hoops with the kids, and made a giant ‘Happy Holidays’ banner with the children in the playroom. The team’s efforts brought exactly what they hoped for; smiling faces and holiday joy.

Special Needs Resource Fair Interchange Business Organization (IBO) has teamed with The Mosaic Foundation for Autism to bring the first ever IBO/Mosaic Interactive Special Needs Resource Fair to Long Island on Saturday, February 1st, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which will be held at The Mosaic School for Autism, located at 1309 Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh. Designed to alleviate the typically drawn out “trial and error” process that so many families who have children with autism and other developmental and/or learning disabilities often endure, this FREE comprehensive resource fair will feature over 50 special needs industry professionals and educators specializing in more than 45 areas that include: cognitive development, special education, guardianship law and social security benefits. Also readily available to provide free counsel and answer questions during the Fair will be speech, music and art therapists, sports,/activity coordinators, parent coaches, financial consultants, child and adult advocates, and social program providers. In addition to bringing special needs industry experts under one roof, the Interactive Special Needs Resource Fair also provides families with a more genuine perspective on the various special needs programs available and how they might be of benefit to their children. Attendees are encouraged to bring their children to the Fair so they

can participate in a series of interactive breakout sessions that will allow opportunity to personally experience each program to help families uncover those most suited for serving their child’s unique needs. The day will also offer children in attendance fun and engaging activities, including children zumba, yoga, arts and crafts, as well as games and prizes. “A common complaint often heard from special needs parents is that finding qualified experts can be difficult and time-consuming,” explains IBO President Tom Gibson, who has a 14-year-old son who is deaf. “Our mission in hosting the Interactive Special Needs Resource Fair is to bring to the many families who have children with special needs a comprehensive, effective network of local, qualified professionals who are readily available to help them address and see through any issues, concerns or situations they might be facing.” Founder of The Mosaic School for Autism and The Mosaic Foundation, Lauretta Murdock, who has two children of her own with autism, adds, “When raising children with special needs, time is always of the essence and can often mean the difference in helping children meet their potential. Realizing trial and error is not a luxury we can afford, our Fair is not only designed to be informative but also as interactive as possible, allowing

For The Love Of Jake Five months ago, Jake Koenigsdorf was found alone in his apartment, dead from a heroin overdose. He was 21. Like millions of others, his opiate addiction started with painkillers. IV heroin use is the last and cheapest option for kids like Jake who get hooked on opiates and can’t find a solution to get clean and stay that way. Jake was unique and impossible not to love. He tried so hard, but like so many, he died alone. You see, most addicts and alcoholics have three options. Find a solution, get locked up, or die. Until one of those options happens, they are a tornado ripping through the lives of everyone in their path. The wreckage impacts everyone, including those who have lost loved ones or personal property to drug-related theft, DUI accidents, etc. Jake’s biggest wish was to leave his mark in the world. He wanted to matter. His parents and friends want to achieve for him in death what he wasn’t able to in life. In his name, they have founded the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation to raise money

to help alcoholics and addicts who are willing to do whatever it takes to get clean but don’t have the financial means to search for a solution - those that slip through the cracks, without wealthy families, insurance or access to state support. They must be desperate and willing. That is the key, you see. Willingness. If addicts are not willing to do whatever it takes to get clean, they will likely fail. It takes a level of desperation to commit to the program and way of life necessary to get and stay clean. The Foundation isn’t just a dream. They have already raised enough to support eight addicts on their journey. Will they succeed? To be frank, if there was a cure, there would be no need for a foundation. But there is at least one solution that has helped many addicts and alcoholics stay clean for their whole lives. The hope is that the ones that the Foundation helps will join the ranks of these survivors. The Foundation’s first fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. on January 23rd at the Mansion at Timber Point in

Great River. There will be live music, a buffet dinner, speakers and a Chinese auction. Honorary Degree

Major League Baseball pitcher Joseph M. Nathan, a Stony Brook University alumnus and former Seawolves baseball star, received an honorary degree during the first of two Winter Commencement ceremonies today. “Dr. Nathan,” who recently signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, and graduated from Stony Brook in 1997 with a degree in Business Management, was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for “serving as an exemplary

role model” and for his “unwavering commitment to Stony Brook University and the Department of Athletics.” During the ceremony, Nathan was praised for his work ethic, his passion, and his success on and off the field. “I am blown away,” said the 341-save, six-time Major League All Star pitcher after his degree was made official by SUNY Trustee Cary Staller. “I have been taken aback and humbled by the whole experience.” Nathan went on to say

that he was not widely recruited to play baseball; that Stony Brook was “the absolute perfect fit,” and that “coming to Stony Brook was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.” In total, 2,244 degrees were conferred at the two separate ceremonies: 1,090 Bachelors; 208 Doctorals; 818 Masters and 128 Certificates. The graduates join the more than 155,000 Stony Brook graduates from around the world who carry on Stony Brook’s mission in both their lives and work.

Suffolk Federal Credit Union recently hosted its 5th Annual Food Drive benefitting Long Island Cares, the Hauppaugebased food bank that provides emergency food assistance to more than 550 agencies across Long Island including food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers, day care centers, homeless shelters, veteran’s services and more. Through the generosity of its members, Suffolk Federal collected more than 1000 pounds of

Searching For That Fresh Start By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As much as I – and millions of others – look to the New Year as a fresh start of sorts, the question certainly arises: is such a thing even possible? In the age of racing from one day to the next, is there time to pause and press the reset button? I always go back to the wise words of a dear friend, who said “you can start your day over any time you wish.” Well, if that’s true, then it would follow the same would go for a week, a month, a year… any point in time when such a clean slate is deemed necessary. In theory, anyway.

Does it work? Can all slights, real and imagined, be forgiven and forgotten? Personally, I believe that they can. Forgiven, anyway. Sure, the mind tends to dwell, and perhaps certain things are not meant to be wiped away completely, as they serve as building blocks, part of the learning curve of life. Day to day, things happen; some we have control over, others we do not. But at the end of those days, we must step back and prioritize what is truly important. And, despite all the outside forces, it always seems to come right back down to the basics – family, friends, loved

ones, those whom we cannot imagine our lives without. And the memories… those individual moments that together create a collective sense of happiness and comfort, those memories we simply cannot live without and would do anything to preserve. This New Year, my hope is the same as it has always been – for good health, happiness and days full of limitless possibilities. And memories. More precious moments to savor in the coming days and weeks and months and years – because those are the things you simply can’t press the reset button on.

For instance, at Mass last week, St. John’s own Father Rob spoke about how we can seek Jesus’ love by loving others. By treating others with respect through gift giving and spending time with

those we care about, we are able to get closer to God and enjoy His eternal love. When Father Rob spoke about pausing and being thankful for what we have instead of concerning ourselves with the latest gift, he was illustrating what many people have prompted before. He suggests that we should be concerned with using this time off from school to establish and firm a relationship with God and our family. Instead of rushing to wake up on Christmas morning to open up tons of presents, we need to be more focused on enjoying the journey and creating connections, both with God and those whom we care about.

Joel Foundation Donation Grammy Award-winning artist and recent Kennedy Center Honoree, Billy Joel, through The Joel Foundation, has once again generously provided for students and faculty in Stony Brook Music Department by donating another premiere concert piano; this time it’s a Bosendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, considered the “Rolls Royce” of pianos. “I ran into Billy Joel last August in Sag Harbor and thanked him for the Baldwin Grand Piano he donated several years ago,” said Perry Goldstein, the Professor and Chair of Stony Brook University’s Music Department. “He told me he’s heard very good things about the music program at Stony Brook and said that he might have another piano for us. Some months later, we received the Bosendorfer.” The Bosendorfer has

nine more keys than a conventional piano, which enables a completely new octave and elicits a huge, rich, luxurious tone. Worth $250,000, the highend concert grand piano is housed in Staller Center recital hall where it has been played by members of the piano faculty and piano students in the graduate program. “Stony Brook attracts over 100 graduate applicants in piano each year who are eager to study with our superb piano faculty, Distinguished Professor of Music Gilbert Kalish and Professor Christina Dahl,” said Goldstein. “We are pleased to add this showcase piano to our fleet of concert grands in the department and thank The Joel Foundation for their generous support of music at Stony Brook.” The gift was made possible by The Joel

Opening Reception Set Twenty-six artists have had their work selected for exhibit in the Huntington Arts Council’s 2013 “Making an Impression II” printmaking show, juried by Stephanie Navon Jacobson. The public is invited to meet many of the artists and the juror during the exhibit’s opening reception on Friday, January 3rd from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Main Street Petite Gallery, located at 213 Main Street, Huntington. Juror & artist Stephanie Navon Jacobson encourages all artists to explore printmaking, as she believes. “Printmaking is the only medium that inherently gives the artist a record of their thought process and decisions through state proofs. I enjoy technique and process and there can be lots of process in printmaking. It can be very sophisticated and complicated or very simple, and still yield

wonderful images.” When asked about her approach as a juror, Ms. Jacobson stated, “There were many wonderful submissions for this exhibit. I looked for technique and craftsmanship as well as building an exhibit that showcases the various intaglio, relief and planographic printmaking techniques. Bus Schedule Announced Recently, County Executive Bellone was joined by John Corrado, Tom Mcateer and Ray Grimaldi of Suffolk Transportation Service, Joe Delgado of Suffolk Independent Living Organization and Department of Public Works officials to announce the commencement of Sunday bus service on eight bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.” The expanded Sunday service will also be available for the Suffolk County

The Art League of Long Island invites artists from the tri-state area to submit entries to the upcoming juried exhibition titled Landscapes: From Metropolis To Arcadia showing April 6th through May 11th, 2014. This exhibition in the Common Thread series will concentrate on landscape imagery. While usually thought of as representing natural scenery, the category may also embrace seascapes, cityscapes, garden scenes and woodlands, for example, and may be rendered both realistically or abstractly. see and how you see and portray it is unrestricted, open to many forms of expression. Original works in 2-D and 3-D in any medium (within certain size specifications), except for video and installation art, can be accommodated in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Entries will be selected and judged by Jennifer McGregor, Director of Arts and Senior Curator at Wave Hill, a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, presenting artworks both in the galleries and on the grounds that engage

visitors in a dialogue with nature. From 1983 to 1990 Ms. McGregor was Director of the New York City Percent for Art Program, after which she has served as consultant on numerous public art projects and commissions. Ruminations In The Gallery Ruminations, a twoperson exhibition of paintings and mixed-media creations by Kristina Bloem and Frances Siegel will open at Suffolk County Community College’s Gallery West on February 13th, 2014 A Long Island native, Bloem studied fine art at Parsons School of Design and has been involved with many decorative painting projects, in addition to working on her own paintings. Bloem makes her home in Riverhead. “Growing up with a graphic designer father, art was always a big part of my world,” Bloem said. “Being an artist has meant different things to me at different times, but what I am sure of is that art is essential. To heal, to grow, to see anew. To live. My goal is to create beauty and uplift the soul. I like obsessing over the details, creating a polished image by layering tones in an almost meditative fashion until I’m finally satisfied. I’m just trying to find my way through life through the painted image. No matter how dark the days are, I can still paint beauty and joy to lift us up,” Bloem added. Frances Siegel has shown her paintings,

drawings and mixed media works in galleries worldwide, and in museums such as: the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Albrecht Museum of Fine Art, the Flint Institute of Arts, the Dishman Art Museum, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Siegel is represented by the Prince Street Gallery in New York City where she has had several exhibitions. Siegel lives in New York City’s Westbeth, the Artists’ community and the Adirondack Mountains. “During the many years that I worked with elementary-aged school children in a program I created and called ‘Our Place’, I had the daily opportunity to observe and support children fully engaged in what comes naturally to them: imaginative play,” Siegel said. “In turn, I found myself incorporating its principles into my artistic practice; exploring whatever materials around me can do, taking inspiration from impulses, body sensations, and dreams; and following the free play of hands that like to make shapes that together can then take me to never-before-seen destinations. Nothing is off limits - the only rules

are ones I might happen to make up -or change -along the way.” Ruminations will open with a reception on Thursday, February 13th, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. when both artists will be present to discuss and answer questions about their work. Blue Angels Are Back!

Memorial Scholarship Established The friends and family of Emmy-winning CBS News Producer Michael Rosenbaum have established a memorial scholarship at the Stony Brook University School of Journalism in support of the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. The $30,000 gift from the Michael S. Rosenbaum Foundation will be matched by a special grant from Jim and Marilyn Simon and the Simons Foundation, to establish a $60,000 endowed scholarship. Michael Rosenbaum had an illustrious 27-year career at CBS, producing for CBS News, 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II. He served as Tel Aviv bureau chief during the First Palestinian Intifada, collaborating with correspondents Dan Rather and Bob Simon. His field producing

during the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 led to the Peabody award and two Emmy awards. He died of a brain tumor in May of 2012. He was 64 years old. “Our goal in creating the Michael S. Rosenbaum Foundation is to honor and continue Michael’s work with young correspondents, producers and writers,” said Michael’s sister, Judy Witt. “This scholarship will provide students with a unique opportunity through the Marie Colvin Center to do just that, for now and into the future.” The scholarship will support student journalists who participate in the Marie Colvin Center’s “Journalism Without Walls” program, which takes undergraduates and graduates overseas to report, write and produce

print and multimedia journalism. The program has already sent student journalists to China, Russia, Cuba and Kenya. In January 2014, Journalism Without Walls heads to Istanbul, Turkey for a ten-day reporting trip. “This scholarship was created to honor the memory, values, and ideals of Michael Rosenbaum, who believed deeply in an informed public and a free international press,” said Professor Ilana Ozernoy, Program Director for the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. “This generous gift from the Rosenbaum Foundation will support young journalists who embody those ideals in pursuit of their career goals by helping to provide them with international field training.” “We anticipate that

Michael’s legacy of producing journalism that made a difference will not only inspire those students who go overseas, but all of our journalism students,” said Howard Schneider, Dean of the Stony Brook School of Journalism. “It has never been more important to have role models to inspire the next generation.” Marie Colvin was a Long Island native and acclaimed war correspondent. She was tragically killed in Syria on February 22, 2012, while covering the conflict for The Sunday Times of London. She was known for her moving accounts of innocent civilians caught in the tide of war, and for her courage, tenacity and indefatigable commitment to ground reporting. She grew up in Oyster Bay, not far from Stony Brook University.

The Marie Colvin Center was established in 2012 to honor Marie Colvin’s legacy by training the next generation of international multimedia reporters, while fostering proactive and innovative solutions to meet the need for foreign news coverage. The announcement of the Rosenbaum Scholarship comes in tandem with the expansion of the Marie Colvin Center Advisory Board to include Jon Williams, Managing Editor for International News at ABC News, and Ann Curry, National and International Correspondent/Anchor for NBC News.
