Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York than any other state in the nation. Participants in the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s ninth annual Coney Island Polar Dip will plunge into the frigid Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day to raise money to send more New York families to Camp Sunshine. Dance Students Perform This past weekend, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) students danced in the world premier production of the new ballet “Cracked.” The LIHSA dancers performed with dancers from the Nomad Contemporary Ballet Company and the American Theater Dance Workshop, as well as Broadway veteran performers Michelle and Jerome Vivona. “Cracked” is a reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s timeless holiday classic, “The Nutcracker” and destined

to become a holiday hit. The story follows Kara — the granddaughter of Clara from the original ballet — as she takes an epic Christmas Eve journey through New York City to the Land of Sweets. Audiences meet exciting new characters and are reacquainted with old favorites. “We are thrilled with this opportunity to pass on to the next generation of dancers, all we have gained from our experiences on the stage, as well as from the many amazing choreographers, directors, teachers and fellow

performers we have had the privilege of working with over the years,” Ms. Vivona said of the production. “This has been a wonderful experience for our students,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth. “They learned firsthand about the audition process and the rigors of working with a professional dance company. They were extremely excited about it and completely committed to the task,” he added. “They rehearsed tirelessly, devoting their time on weekends and after school.”

home,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “PTSD related suicide is an American tragedy and we need to do more to help our veterans work through the challenges they face.” The Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel in a secure and anonymous setting. The unique nature of the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to those veterans seeking assistance. Since its inception in 2012, over 2,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Project where they share their experiences with fellow veterans and allow the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Project to veteran households throughout the County. “Suffolk is home to the largest veteran population in the State of New York, the second largest in the United States, and we need to ensure that they are taken care of each and everyday,” said Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin. “We know that holiday time is often the hardest time of the year for families who lost their sons or daughters. We will never forget their sacrifice to protect our freedom and way of life.” As State Senator, Zeldin increased funding in the 2014-2015 state budget to continue the expansion of the Joseph Dwyer Project. The additional funding and success of the program in Suffolk County has

allowed the program to be instituted in 12 counties throughout the State. Joseph P. Dwyer Project meets weekly in areas throughout the County including: St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, Beacon House in Bay Shore, Sag Harbor, The Vets Place in Yaphank, Rose Caracappa senior center in Mt. Sinai, Liberty Village in N. Amityville, Huntington YMCA in Huntington and North Shore LIJ VA Clinic in Bay Shore. Everything Old Is New Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a ﬂat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift

that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. New Year’s Eve festivities peak when the official countdown of the clock begins. After the ball drops and midnight has arrived, revelers cheer to the new year and exchange kisses and well wishes. Once such wishes have been exchanged, many people begin to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” But few know what “Auld Lang Syne” means or why it is sung on New Year’s Eve. Confusion regarding this song is almost as notable as the tradition of singing it. Many people mumble through the lyrics because they never bothered to learn them. “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish composition that is well over 200 years old. Written by Robert Burns in the 1700s, the author never intended for the song to become a staple of the holiday season. It was

originally a poem that was later put to the tune of a traditional folk song. The title translates roughly in English as “old long since,” or “long, long ago.” The song pays homage to times gone by and past experiences. The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and other special occasions all over the world, but it is best known for its affiliation with New Year’s festivities. The man behind that affiliation may be Canadian musician Guy Lombardo, whose band used “Auld Lang Syne” as a bridge between two radio programs during a live New Year’s Eve performance in 1929. Coincidentally, the song was played directly after the clock struck midnight, laying the groundwork for a New Year’s Eve tradition.

Now “Auld Lang Syne” has forever been tied to wellintentioned resolutions and sappy slaps on the back. Despite selling millions of records, Lombardo became more famous for his New Year’s Eve song than anything else. Confusion over “Auld Lang Syne” remains to this day. It has been the butt of jokes in popular culture, even earning a nod in the movie “When Harry Met Sally.” Harry laments to Sally that he never quite understood what the song meant and ponders whether it is about forgetting about friends or remembering them. Sally sums it up by saying the song is simply about old friends. That is the interpretation many New Year’s Eve celebrants embrace as they toast to the new year and sing their hearts out.

Old habits can be hard to break, which can make it difficult for men and women to stay committed to their New Year’s resolutions. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial goals. If your goal for the coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interestbearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. • Enlist a friend. If your New Year’s resolution is

one that others can apply to their own lives, then by all means enlist a friend. For example, men and women who want to find more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. • Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and other special occasions all over the world, but it is best known for its affiliation with New Year’s festivities. The man behind that affiliation may be Canadian musician Guy Lombardo, whose band used “Auld Lang Syne” as a bridge between two radio programs during a live New Year’s Eve performance in 1929. Coincidentally, the song was played directly after the clock struck midnight, laying the groundwork for a New Year’s Eve tradition. Now “Auld Lang Syne” has forever been tied to well-

intentioned resolutions and sappy slaps on the back. Despite selling millions of records, Lombardo became more famous for his New Year’s Eve song than anything else. Confusion over “Auld Lang Syne” remains to this day. It has been the butt of jokes in popular culture, even earning a nod in the movie “When Harry Met Sally.” Harry laments to Sally that he never quite understood what the song meant and ponders whether it is about forgetting about friends or remembering them. Sally sums it up by saying the song is simply about old friends. That is the interpretation many New Year’s Eve celebrants embrace as they toast to the new year and sing their hearts out.
